Ever since way back when, when Darlton informed us that there was something we were all missing from the pilot episode, I've been obsessed. Obsessed in finding this missing link. I've probably watched it a dozen times, scrutinizing every puff and swirl of black smoke, the mysterious reflections in Jack's eye in the openeing close-up, the constalations under which our castaways are sitting to try to determine the location of the island, and most recently, the baton/bamboo laying beside Jack on the jungle floor. But there was something I was missing, something we all missed, right there in front of our eyes....
There has been a ton of speculation, ever since the four toed statue appeared, as to who, or what, the statue was built to represent. Was it built by an ancient civilization that once inhabited the island? Was it build by aliens from the future? I don't think so. I think it's much simpler than that...
So I went back and watched the pilot episode again this past weekend, and that's when it hit me...seeing John Locke, laying there on the beach surrounded by burning wreckage, looking down at his feet, and appearing to wiggle his...four toes!! If you look closely, it looks like Locke is missing his little toe.
I believe Locke is the inspiration behind the four toed statue. I believe it was (will be) built in honor of the leader if the island inhabitants. I believe John Locke has been here before.
With the infusion of the time travel hints we've received, espacially in Season 4, that Darlton is builing toward a huge revelation that John Locke (or some form of him) has been traveling through time for thousands of years. This is the reason Locke, as we know him today, has such a connection to the Island. This is why the Island "needs him".
