Please note that this is not an original theory, but rather something which was proposed in an earlier theory which I had reached through a different route. More on the original theory at the end of this one.
Initially, my belief was that the Island (or Jacob or whatever) can appear however it wishes to people and coax them into doing something. Locke sees Boone, Hurley sees Dave, Jack sees Christian, Mr. Eko sees his brother etc. So that part is fine.
If Jack saw Mr. Eko's brother instead, obviously it won't make much of a difference to him emotionally - apart from the fact that it is freaky. So why is it that off-late, Christian has started appearing to everyone all around the town ? Apart from Jack, Sawyer (who knows Christian is Jack's father) and Anna Lucia, the others don't even know who Christian is.. Why should the Island / Jacob appear as Christian to Michael / Locke or even Claire ?
If the island is so powerless, how could it appear as Christian to both Locke before the island was moved and *bad events* happened and also to Jack presumably a long time after that ? Why should Locke come out of the island himself instead of letting Christian do his job directly ? Locke must know that he could be in any place and any time after moving the island. That would mean that while he was gone, there is a good reason why there are a lot more things that can go bad. He still took the risk to get out of the island, just to talk to O6.
Does that mean that Locke was actually tricked into believing that moving the island was a good idea at the end of Season 4 ? There was another theory (sorry, forgot the name) which mentioned that Christian is actually not Jacob. That Jacob was subdued. Now O6 needs to go back and rescue Jacob / Island.
I always thought the way Christian appeared to Jack in season one was very similar to how the G-Man appears in half life. Mysterious, evil, has *business partners* and wields considerable power.
I think I will have to agree to that theory. If the author of the original theory reads this, please let me know what you think.
