I've read theories that attempt to explain the origin of the smoke monster. Many focus on Smokey's origin from the past. "Perhaps it was from the ancients" or "a security system meant to frighten the Dharma people into staying in their respective parts of the island." Assuming that time is relative on the island and that, presumably, certain people can travel forward and backward in time, is it unrealistic to think of Smokey's origin from the future?
Smokey seems to utilize technology that is far, far superior to anything that we currently have or would have had years ago (Dharma). Even time travel seems more reasonable than a smoke monster that appears as black smoke emitting a beastly mechanized sound one day and then shows up as Goodwin's wifey to confront Juliet in the forest the other.
If time travel is available on the island today, then it could also be readily available in the future. What if Smokey is a security system created years, maybe decades, maybe centuries down the line to protect the island? Perhaps it's a mechanism that is unstuck in time -- something that can see the future and correct mistakes in the past. Almost like a mechanical/electrical/(spirit-like?) device that "course-corrects" time by eliminating people who pose a threat to the island long before they even pose a threat.
I understand that there is a strong psychological and philosophical aspect to Smokey. It tends to play judge, jury, executioner. This could explain the "but I'm a good person!" on another level. Good is purely in terms of how the island sees the person, not what the person has done or will do. Smokey could judge the person by his or her actions in the future, not just what it finds in the person's mind that has already occurred.
If this theory has already been proposed, I apologize.
