Okay, many comments from my last post mentioned not enough evidence, so I suppose I should now expound on our theory. Here you’ll find much more evidence to support it. I had simply wanted to get an idea for how folks view the thought of the island being the Garden of Eden, and so far, it’s a pretty heated debate. My brother and I continue to be convinced. If you haven’t read my first post, you should do so before reading on. It’s called “Island is the Garden of Eden.” And before you debunk the theory based on it being so “religious”, we want you to know that this is just the heart of the argument. We believe very firmly that the producers are going to balance the whole faith vs. science thing throughout the show, as they have already done. We believe the island at least contains the Garden of Eden, but it is being scientifically cloaked, and we are highly interested in the “Time Loop Theory” to explain how it’s being cloa! ked. If you look to that theory, and combine it somewhat with ours, you have an excellent balance between faith and science.
If you’ve read our first post, you’ll remember that we referenced a tree in the Cost of living episode that we believe to be either the Tree of Life or the Tree of the Knowledge of Good and Evil from the Garden of Eden. Here’s a picture of that Tree…

My apologies for the error about Adam and Eve in my last post. They were not in the first episode. They were a great clue, I believe. I obviously don’t believe they were actually Adam and Eve, though.
And as for this idea being based on one religious viewpoint, that is not necessarily the case. Many established religions believe in the story of the Garden and of Creation. Sayid is a Muslim, and they also believe in the Garden. It would not be crazy for the producers to do it this way. If you want to be religious while being as non-offensive as possible, the best topic to cover would be Creation and the Garden of Eden. Several religions believe in such a story.
Please note again that the following will be seen as very mystical, rather than scientific. There are many illusions to biblical references. We, in no way, believe that the show will come down to a purely biblical or mystical explanation. We fully believe they will balance the ending between faith and science somehow, but we’re just not sure how. The time travel, the cloaking of the island—and many other issues—we have not addressed, because they are scientific. We think that if you put our theory together with some of the better scientific theories, you will have a fairly balanced idea about the show. Many of the better scientific theories don’t give a great reason as to WHY the island would need to be cloaked. I also haven’t seen much scientific evidence pertaining to the actual IDENTITY of the island. They often trail into very deep and involved explanations of scientific laws that would be very difficult for the show to explain to the common viewer. The overall! question established by the producers early on is, “What is the Island?”
Now, a few more ideas that point to the Garden…
Check out Milton’s Paradise Lost poem. Several others have posted on this, so I won’t go into detail on it. It’s a great piece of evidence for the island as the Garden, though. You can find stuff on this in almost all the Lost forums, if you choose to check it out.
Here are a few quotes from the DHARMA folks…the first points to Adam and Eve’s thirst for knowledge, which is why they sinned and ate from the forbidden tree, in our theory which we’ll expound on in a moment, starting the curse of the Valenzetti Equation, and the second is blatantly obvious…
-DHARMA QUOTES (from lostpedia.com, Alvar Hanso page)
-"From the dawn of our species, Man has been blessed with curiosity. Our most precious gift, without exception, is the desire to know more—to look beyond what is accepted as the truth and to imagine what is possible."
- Address to the United Nations Security Council, 1967, posted on first iteration of TheHansoFoundation.org and partially quoted by Tom.

Through various means (mainly online information given through the Lost Experience) it has been revealed that the numbers are the Valenzetti Equation. This equation points to the end of the world, and DHARMA was/is trying to change the equation, and in turn, stop the end of the world. If you look at the quotes above, particularly the second one, it seems that DHARMA figured out that to change the END of the world, you had to go to the BEGINNING of the world, i.e., the Garden of Eden—the cradle of civilization and of mankind.
NUMBERS
The numbers themselves have been referred to numerous times as a curse, or at least as being cursed (Hurley’s curse). DHARMA has realized that the equation was set into motion at the time of Adam and Eve’s failure, which set death into motion, and CURSED all of mankind to come. God cursed Adam with toil, Eve in CHILDBIRTH (birthing problems) the serpent, and creation itself. All of it was cursed…doomed to death…doomed to one day come to destroy itself. That curse began the equation as revealed by Valenzetti.
DHARMA has since set out to reverse this curse in the very place that it began, in the Garden of Eden. The dilemma has been that DHARMA is trying to scientifically change a problem that is faith-based. This is why DHARMA has, up to this point, failed. ENTER the OTHERS.
The Others are also trying to change the equation, but they are the on the side of faith rather than science. This is why the Oceanic survivors have been brought to the island (whether by fate or by deliberate action of man, who knows)…their goal is to attempt to, in essence, atone for the wrongdoing and lack of repentance found in Adam and Eve’s actions. That is why they are referred to as “good” people. They are good people with bad pasts—they are ones chosen to be judged, as was Eko, in hopes of one of them passing the test of judgment and reversing the curse, thus saving mankind from the impending doom.
In the podcast following “The Cost of Living” Episode that much of our theory comes from, the producers pointed out Eko’s last words, and the final words of the episode. As he is dying, he whispers something to Locke. Sayid asks what Eko said, and Locke says, “He said we’re next.”
The producers then said that this statement was implying that all the survivors could at some point be judged. This is the goal, then—to pass the judgment test. Eko was not sorry for his past, so he failed the test. What would have happened if he had been repentant? How would things have changed? The show will undoubtedly reveal the answer to this question at some point. My theory is that a true repentance in the face of judgment would change the equation.
DADDY ISSUES
Everyone on the island has Daddy issues. They all have some beef with their fathers—they’ve all been mistreated, or at least feel mistreated, by their fathers. This also seems to point to the ULTIMATE Daddy issue, the issue that all mankind has with the FATHER OF MANKIND…Adam. The one who originally did all his children wrong by partaking of the forbidden fruit, setting into motion the CURSE, (the numbers) and dooming all of mankind to death. Those chosen to attempt to pass the judgment test would obviously have daddy issues of some sort, if they are trying to reverse the action of Adam.
THE WHISPERS
The whispers point to the story of Cain and Abel—sons of Adam and Eve. Cain killed Abel, and it says that Abel’s blood cried out from the ground. The whispers are from some of those who have died on the show. One obvious whisper is from Ben’s mother. She died in childbirth, and if you read through the whisper transcripts, you will see that one voice is clearly identified as Ben’s mother when Ben is shown chasing her into the forest and he gets stopped by the sonic fence. She is dead, and we now hear her voice in the whispers. Another Adam and Eve connection. On a sidenote, that’s why Miles is on the island—he’s there to hear the whispers.
ANCIENT CULTURES and the CULTURAL ANTRHOPOLOGIST
In one of the final podcasts before this short break due to the writer’s strike, Darlton gave us a clue. When asked if it was significant that Charlotte was a cultural anthropologist, they said it was indeed significant. They then pointed out that a cultural anthropologist studies ANCIENT CULTURES and then they said it again, this time strongly emphasizing the words “ANCIENT CULTURES.” The team currently on the island consists of people with specific skills chosen for specific reasons. She is on the island because she studies ancient cultures—because there are remnants of ancient cultures on the island. What could possibly be more ancient than the place where mankind supposedly began? Another possible clue to the island containing the Garden. She also seems to know exactly where she is. If you watch the episode where she lands on the island…she wakes up hanging from a tree, and seems to be in complete awe of her surroundings. She knows she’s in a very special, a! nd very ancient, place.
FATE
The question of fate and destiny enter into the equation because it’s the idea that fate cannot be changed. The idea is that fate caused Adam and Eve to eat the forbidden fruit, and if fate can’t be changed, then the initiative is hopeless. But, if fate can be changed, even at one small, insignificant moment, then there is hope of changing the equation and saving mankind.
It could also be that the show believes that the first humans, Adam and Eve, were the only ones who actually had a TRUE definitive free will. That is, one to determine their OWN FATE. The show has addressed the idea of free will several times. It could be that the only ones unaffected by fate were Adam and Eve, but their actions started the equation, which began fate, and fate now demands that all mankind destroy itself one day. Adam and Eve set fate into motion, that’s why it must be changed—fate is part of the curse—part of the equation.
JACOB
We found something very interesting that led us to a theory on Jacob. We don’t want to over-mystify the show (some of you probably think we already have), so this is only a theory…it could be an illusion to who Jacob is rather than who he actually is, but…
Someone posted an interesting idea on the title of the show. They mentioned how many Bible themes are represented in the show, and put that together with the LOST title, and theorized that maybe something is coming from the Lost Books of the Bible. This is an interesting theory. In one such book, called The Book Of Jubilees, we found some VERY interesting information on a man from the Old Testament called Enoch, who is recorded in the Bible as having NEVER DIED (Genesis 5:21-24). One of only two men mentioned as such (the other being Elijah).
In this Lost book of the Bible, Enoch is said to have been the very first person to learn to read and write. He was given the task of recording all mankind’s deeds—good and evil. In essence, HE WAS MAKING A LIST of every man’s actions. And to do so, he was placed IN THE GARDEN OF EDEN to continue his work, according to this Lost book (Jubilees 4:23- can be read here http://www.sacred-texts.com/bib/jub/jub17.htm )
Jacob has THE ultimate list. He seems to be the one who picked these survivors. He has the information on them, and he is somehow directing Ben. The list shows who’s good and who’s evil. The list knows who could actually make an attempt at passing judgment and changing the equation.
Now, whether or not the show would actually go this mystical in an explanation, I somewhat doubt, but this idea might enter into the show—that Jacob has the ultimate list of mankind’s deeds, and he knows who’s good and who’s evil.
I have a theory on the actual present identity of Jacob, as well. Because there are many references to Jacob and the Bible, and because of the Bad Twin book, I considered the idea of there being some sort of twin connection in the story. It has been theorized that Jacob could be Jack’s grandfather, but after considering all the options, I came to a different conclusion…
I think Jacob and Christian Shepherd are twins. I came to this conclusion after Hurley found Jacob’s cabin and saw someone who looked like Christian Shepherd rocking in the chair. Darlton also stated in a podcast, answering a question from a viewer, that it was intuitive of this viewer to notice that the person in the cabin looked like Christian Shepherd. They never said it WAS him, but they pointed out that it LOOKED like him—possibly implying a twin.
Thus, Jacob would be Jack’s Uncle, not his Grandfather. I’ve yet to determine which one is good and which one is bad, or if there even is such a delineation. But there’s the obvious reference to the twins Jacob and Esau of the Bible, and Jacob has a son named Benjamin. The implications are obvious. Jacob deceived Esau for his birthright, but interestingly enough, after the deception, the line blurs as to whether or not one brother was more or less evil/good than the other brother. Jacob was definitely more blessed than Esau, even though he used deception to get his way. And there’s the reference seen on the screen in room 23 “God Loves You as he Loved Jacob”, so who knows…
JACK
If Christian Shepherd and Jacob are related, then several generations of this bloodline have been on this island at the same time, at least at some point. (Jacob, Christian, Jack, Aaron) and it implies that there is something special about this bloodline (see above section on Jacob’s possible past). Jack has been shown as one of the “goodest of the of the good.” He has been a key player throughout and a focal point of the show. I know the producers have said his character was not supposed to be such a large part, but at some point they seemed to have changed their minds. And, if the idea is for someone to pass the test of judgment, then they could, at any point, choose to single out any character to do this. (This sort of open-endedness would be good for such a show when you don’t know what actors will actually stick around for the whole thing or who the viewers will respond to).
So, it seems that Jack may possibly be the best candidate to pass the final test of judgment. He has a tattoo that implies his is among them, but not one of them. He is special. In the end, it may fall to him to atone for Adam’s sin and reverse the curse. This again is very religious—one savior for all—so I think the show will somehow balance this scientifically as well, I’m just not sure how. Again, I can’t fathom the show focusing ONLY on science or ONLY on faith. There has to be a balance.
It makes me wonder if they might bring the final question down to WHAT can actually reverse the curse…science or faith. That would make an interesting ending, and a good story.
THE MONSTER
I think when you argue for the island as the Garden, you automatically lean to smokey being the angel that guards the Garden. I thought this at first, but again, I’m not inclined to believe the producers would go that religious. I’m not sure as to the exact IDENTITY of smokey, but I do believe that it is some form a Judgment Seat. This could be God himself, the Angel that guards the Garden, OR it could be something created scientifically by DHARMA or someone else as a man-made from of judgment. Why would they do such a thing? They’re trying to reverse the curse, so in trying to do such a thing, they may have needed something to be a judge of mankind (obviously they couldn’t simply enlist God into the work!) Perhaps he’s a manmade sort of God. That would again be very interesting. It reads people’s memories and judges them accordingly. The scientific ideas of TESLA (See Wikipedia) give some insight into this possibility, I think.
Either way, it is a tool of judgment. It judged Eko and he was found wanting. The producers have also noted that smokey became the Medusa spiders that bit Paulo and Nikki and doomed them to be buried alive. Smokey judges. Smokey is the key to changing the equation. Someone must pass Smokey’s final test, whether or not he’s heavenly or earthly doesn’t much matter, I don’t think.
On a sidenote, I’ve always found it interesting that Rousseau asked Sayid when she found him, “Are you Him?” If I recall correctly, I believe Desmond also asked the same question when the Losties found him in the hatch. I think he asked Jack that question “are you him” But I wonder if Rousseau is aware of the impending judgment, and she feared that her time had come. When she asked “Are you him” she may have meant “are you smokey? Has my time of judgment come?” That’s just a thought, though. Well, I guess this whole thing is just a thought…
THE END
My loose theory is that it will come down to some crisis moment in which the equation will try to be changed. HOW the equation will be changed is what I think the question will be. Here’s a few ideas…
SAVIOR JACK
After all other fail to pass the judgment, Jack will somehow pass, changing the equation.
SCIENCE VS FAITH
Two factions will continue to both try, simultaneously, to change the equation as the world nears it’s end. Survivors will continue to die as they fail the judgment test. The question will come down to what’s superior—Science or Faith—the producers will be forced to pick a side. It would cause stir no matter which way they went, but it’d make for some great drama!
Of course, this is all speculation. It’s just a SHOW…a FICTIONAL SHOW, and it can use the story of the GARDEN and of the Bible and of SCIENCE whether you believe in Creation, Evolution, God, No God, it doesn’t much matter to the show. And keep in mind that if we really want to figure out the where Lost is going, we can’t base our theories on what WE think is acceptable, we instead have to consider what the creators of the show think is acceptable. We have to try to understand their worldview. If J.J. Abrams is Catholic, then that gives us clear reason to believe that Lost, in the end, will be heavily influenced by religious themes. Not all Catholics believe in a literal Garden of Eden, but they believe in the idea of, or allegorical nature of, the Garden of Eden, and that’s all that is required for this particular theory about Lost to be possible. Consider the possibilites...
