We watched this clip in my evolution class today.

As the neutrophil chased the bacteria I couldn't help but think it looked like and moved like the Smoke Monster.
This got me thinking, what if Smokey is modelled as a kind of neutrophil or gaurdian for the island, set with he task of defending the island from harmful things or people. The plane crashing on the Island was a foreign entity, so Smoke Monster had to investigate the level of danger.
Further thought led me to think of the Island as a whole is some sort of living cell. The stations as organelles, each with their own purposes and jobs. And the cell membrane is that you need to follow the proper baring (have the proper genetic coding) to leave unaffected.
This is obvously pure speculation, farfetched, and has no impact on the plot anyway. I just thought it was interesting and could maybe even be expanded a little more. I mainly wanted to show how much the neutrophil looks like the Smoke Monster.
