The character who recruited Ben's dad, (in the beginning) is actually the main character! He sought Ben's dad because he was actually after Ben. He then went on to seek Juliet and we saw him briefly in series 3 and he hasn't aged at all and is not a frequent face but remains key. What is he, who is he and is he actually dead?
Now Ben learns that he is able to control the residents of lost by using his ability to control lost spirits, but not all are what was!Some are still alive. So we have a story about a manipulating medium in the jungle trying to preserve a very small community which is basically an illusion.
This theory would explain unusual healing qualities found on the island and the inability for the islanders to reproduce within the island. As for the manifest of Oceanic flight 815, some are dead and don't know it and some are alive. So conspiracy with a touch of the supernatural.
