I think that Desmond's shifts in time and his visions are somehow connected to the elements. More specifically light, water and electricity. In the episode "The Constant" his time shifts started in the helicopter when Frank flew it into the thunderhead. Then it happened again when the Dr. flashed a flashlight in his eyes. A couple of times in the rain and also a couple of times while he was touching running water in a sink.
Maybe DHARMA was studying how the elements are connected to time. (and they screwed things up in the process. That's why Ben killed them. The 2 hatches we heard the most about dealt with electromagnetism and the other with water.)
The pregnant women are connected to time as well. When Richard recruited Juliet, he showed her an xray of a woman's uterus. Juliet guessed the woman was old because of what the uterus looked like, but the woman died when she was young due to complications.
