I have a theory that all of the events in LOST may be occurring in the mind of an individual named “Jacob,” whose psyche has been fractured (by a traumatic event? Schizophrenia?) and is attempting to heal/re-integrate. The events on the island represent the various fractured aspects interacting, sorting, competing, and (hopefully) achieving re-integration. Some aspects may end up … rejected.
This came to me during the Jan 31, 2008 Season Premier, when an institutionalized Hurley (in a flash forward) shouts to a departing Jack: “I think he wants us (to go?) back!”
I started wondering who he was.
I believe “he” may be the mysterious “Jacob,” who has appeared as an important entity/figure, in the cabin on the island. And why would Jacob want them to return … let’s review some points of interest:
* Characters represent aspects of psyche/personality/mind: Many of the characters in LOST appear to be almost stereotypes: Jack, the Logical Leader; Sawyer, the Bad Boy; Locke, the Man of Faith; Sayid, the Warrior; Charlie, the Artist; Hurley, the gluttonous hedonist; etc. Perhaps they *are* stereotypes – all aspects of someone’s fractured psyche. Warring aspects represent various segments vying for dominance.
* Whose mind: The Others (through Ben) appear to take orders from Jacob (the “whole”)? Yet not all can see/communicate with Jacob. Different degrees of integration with the core psyche? Could the fractured Jacob have been pleading to Locke/Faith to help him … to help him re-integrate his fractured psyche? Ben (Manipulator?) seeks to subvert the central self to establish himself as the dominant aspect.
* Real-World Explanation Asserted: The writers have asserted that all of LOST can all be explained in real-world terms, with no sci fi, fantasy, or magic genre intrusions. Yet we have clearly seen several things which I submit transcend that claim (e.g., Desmond’s future visions, Locke’s regained mobility and ability to shake off a bullet to the torso, Jacob’s apparently mystical nature, etc.). These events would almost have to be from a Psychological genre: Imagined, hallucinated, or otherwise products of some “internal” mind.
