I've been haunted by a re-occurring theory that helps to explain SOME of what we have seen on LOST. Rest assured that one simple explanation for everything going on is highly unlikely for intelligent viewers like you. I began to suspect this early on, and continue to see elements that can retroactively support it - once we have the big reveal. I recognize that similar lines of thinking have, in part, been offered by "others" already, but I am compelled to assert the following:
I firmly believe that much of what we are seeing is related to genetic experimentation. I believe that once an isolated location was found to preserve the secrecy, other forces came into play which already existed on the island. There are several things I can point to which support my theory, the most prevalent are the following:
1) The ease at which we have seen (some) people kill others. If these are genetic "reproductions", then the natural intrinsic value for human life would be diminished - which is exactly how it is portrayed on LOST. The clones are viewed as expendable projects that can easily be tossed away, and replicated. (IE: mass genesis, etc.) This is intriguing to sane viewers like us (like slowing down at a car accident).
2) Many of the main characters we have seen killed can (and probably will) be revealed alive and well at the end of the show. Probably in some harmonious community or scientific holding facility, etc.
3) The "regenerated" individuals age differently, often accelerating to the point where the DNA was taken from the primary subject, and perhaps not aging beyond.
4) As individuals are "regenerated", partial memories from previous "renditions "of themselves are transferred - hence the confusing flashbacks.
5) Some inconsistent traits may be clues to viewers (IE: wrist watches or arm bands jumping from one arm to the other in different scenes - some are right handed, while others - of the same person - are left). Familiar, yet strangely unfamiliar, feelings or memories, etc.
6) The Ultimate Architect of the project is using "reproductions" or clones as supporting players to control other "reproduction's" lives (IE: the same actor playing supporting roles in more than one character's past).
I could go on, and on. Look, we all know that science - when used for the wrong reasons - can be f***ked up! Keep in mind that LOST was "born" shortly after a cloned sheep named "Dolly". Like all good soap operas, the writers always leave the door open to bring back the main characters. It will make for one hell of a series finally! I will say, that LOST has redefined entertainment in the modern television/media age. We have never seen something like this on TV, and perhaps may never again. The enthusiasm, extenuating blogs, web sites, etc., etc., etc. have engaged people with a common (peaceful) interest from cities and countries around the world (some from nations that want to kill one another right now) - people who probably would never be communicating otherwise. The phenomenon that has become LOST is the real magic - and we are part of it. The island, and its inhabitants, are only supporting characters. What great fun!
