I’ve been working on this theory for a while but looks like Earth Shattering Tesla by Psychedelic Relic 2 beat me to it. His theory is much more sophisticated and detailed than mine. But figured I’d send this along. Mine is centered on the Philadelphia Experiment. Here goes nothing.
Everything going on in Lost made me think about the Philadelphia Experiment (Project Rainbow) from WWII. I’ll give you the basics and along with it the web sites where I got the information so you can look at more detailed information. Some of this stuff just was too close to things happening on Lost to ignore. Maybe where the writers are at least getting some of their ideas.
Einstein and Tesla were both working on a Unified Field Theory. It’s said that neither were ever completed. Under Tesla’s theoretical inventions he theorized about electricity and magnetism’s power to warp, or rather change, space and time and the procedure by which man could forcible control this power. Tesla was fascinated with the idea of light as both a particle and a wave, a fundamental proposition already incorporated into quantum physics. This led to the idea of creating a “wall of light” by manipulating electromagnetic waves in a certain pattern. According to conspiracy theorist this was actually used in the Philadelphia Experiment. The government was working to try to make ships invisible to enemies during WWII. Testing began in 1943 on the USS Eldridge. On July 22, 1943 the first test of the theory rendered the USS Eldridge almost invisible with some reporting a “greenish fog” in it’s place. The effects on the crew were said to be devastating. Some suffered from mental illness, some say consistent with schizophrenia. Others were physically unaccounted for, supposedly vanished, 5 crew members allegedly fused to the metal bulkhead of the ship.
This all came to light in the 1960’s or early 70s by a man named Carlos Allente. (this information if from the book “The Philadelphia Experiment” by Charles Berlitz and William Moore). Carlos Allente wrote a letter to Morris Jessup a scientist who was calling for the government to use Einstein’s theories to find better propulsion for space travel. Allende told Jessup to please not try to continue this research. He was an eye witness to the Philadelphia Experiment. His letters were very bizarre. He told him about the long term effects this had on sailors on the Eldridge.
“ ….results of the experiment was complete invisibility of a ship, and all its crew. Half of the officers and crew of that ship are at present mad as hatters. A few are even confined to certain areas where they may receive trained scientific aid when they either “Go Blank and Get Stuck”. A highly complicated piece of equipment had to be constructed in order to unfreeze them. Usually a “deep freeze” man goes mad, stark raving, gibbering, running mad. A man in an ordinary common freeze is aware of time, sometimes acutely so, yet they are never aware of time precisely as you and I are aware of it. There are only a few of original experimental DE’s crew left by now. Most went insane, one just walked through his quarter’s wall and was never seen again, two went into “The Flame”ie they froze and caught fire, while carrying a small boat compass.

The Montauk Project or Project
According to Conspiracy theorist, years later surviving researchers from the Philadelphia Experiment discussed plans to continue the research into technical aspects of manipulating the electromagnetic bottle with possible military applications of the psychological effects of a magnetic field. One web site said they proposed to the Defense Dept. a promising new weapon that could drive any enemy insane, inducing symptoms of schizophrenia at the touch of a button. Work began in the Brookhaven Nat’l Labs on
1)homeless people were abducted and subjected to huge amounts of electromagnetic radiation to test mind control technology and remote brain programming (most died)

4) a porthole (or portal) in time was created which allowed researchers to travel anywhere in time and space.
5) mind control experiments were conducted…people underwent excruciating periods of physical and mental torture in order to break their minds, then were reprogrammed. They could be used as sleep cells that could be activated to perform missions.
6) Mass psychological experiments, such as the use of enormous subliminal message projects (THINK KARL HERE) and the creation of a “Men in Black” corps to confuse and frighten the public.

This web site says the Project Montauk research started under the direction of Dr. John von Newmann. This man …”was not only the inventor of the modern computer and a mathematical genius…he was able to draw enormous resources of the military…He attempted to couple computer technology with sophisticated radio equipment in an attempt to link people’s minds with machines. Over time, his efforts were quite successful. After years of empirical experimentation, human thoughts could eventually be received by esoteric crystal radio receivers and relayed into a computer which could store the thoughts in terms of information bits. This thought pattern could in turn be displayed on a computer screen and printed out on a piece of paper. These were perfected until a virtual mind reading machine was constructed. (THINK SMOKEY!)

Also from this web site under Al Bielak’s Lecture (Las Vegas, December, 1990) I will quote the next couple paragraphs directly from the web site.
“Mr. Bielak said that he and Preston were the two sailors that were running some special equipment on the Eldridge, the U.S. Navy ship which was turned invisible in1943, known as the Philadelphia Experiment….He and his brother jumped over the ship, when it was in hyperspace, they landed in the future at the secret base in Montauk, NY in 1984…He claims, the Government tried the same experiment 41 years later, on the same date and time, and opened up a hole in time between the two eras ( October 28, 1984). If this hole was not closed, then our world could have been destroyed. (I WAS STUNNED WHEN I SAW THIS DATE. ON THE HATCH MAP IN THE UPPER RIGHT HAND CORNER IT SAYS “SUSPECTED SHUT DOWN DATE 10/28/84”. COINSIDENCE??)
To continue: Mr. Bielak stated that his brother decided to stay in the future, and he agreed to go back to 1943, to close the hole by destroying the equipment onboard the Eldridge. He did accomplish this task and the holes were closed. He said that in 1984 in Montauk, that through contact with the Aliens, they had a time tunnel that existed there. Also he stated that a UFO which was witnessing the experiment in 1943 was caught up in the hole or energy vortex and also transported to the future.
After his experience on the Eldridge, he claims that he worked with people related to the development of the nuclear bomb but objected to the purpose of how the Government wanted to use such technologies. He stated that the Government saw him as a liability and that they would have killed him except that his molecular structure was connected with the two holes in time in 1943 and 1984. Therefore, they believed if they killed him, it could cause a ripple effect that would reopen these holes and thus used the technology they had received from the aliens, to regress him to a baby and sent him back in time to 1927 where he was exchanged for the son of the Bielak family.
Now he states his brother, who stayed in the future, became quite fascinated with the time tunnel at Montauk. Somehow his brother got caught in the time tunnel, some experiment, and again, they had the same situation where, if he died, his death would cause the holes in time to re-open. So again, using some strange technology of the aliens, they were able to take the soul of his brother and place it in the body of his father’s third son. Thus
The last piece of information I found quite fascinating in Mr. Bielak’s talk was a discussion about time travel and parallel universes. “ He stated that using the equipment they had developed, they were able to identify at least four other parallel earths (similar to the TV program on Fox called “Sliders”) and in one of these parallel earths,
What I mean by this, is say I go back in time and kill my grandfather. How could this be possible? If my grandfather died, I would never be born to kill him. What apparently happens in this case, is that the timeline I left, continues as is, with no changes except that I no longer exist there as by generating this new timeline. I forfeit my chance to return to my own timeline. When I killed my grandfather, a new timeline starts minuses my grandfather but I must remain in this altered timeline.
Ok, here I stop quoting from that web site. There’s more there but I stop there, as this is all that applies to LOST. Ok, so Desmond has himself in quite a pickle. When he turned the key he went back to relive that timeline. When he gets hit on the head he ends up back on the island time line. So here’s where it gets confusing. If he died in that timeline from the hit on the head does that mean his catch-22 may be that if Penny succeeds in finding him he can not go back to the other time line because he’s dead. (or maybe he didn’t die). But that also opened the question of all the other survivors. If Naomi is telling the truth and they did find the wreckage and all are dead in the other timeline then they all can never leave the island back into the other time line because they’re dead? At least they are in the other timeline.
