Long ago on a thread far, far away I suggested Tesla and his works were somewhat related to Lost events. But, I was wrong. Tesla and his works are directly related to Lost. They are particularly evident within the founding principles of Dharma, the Hanso research areas, the Dharma Initiatives and all of the most profound physical events throughout the series. Hopefully, you will be as surprised as I was at the breadth and depth of Tesla's Dharma-like viewpoints, expressions, inventions and purpose.
Forget what you thought you knew. Prepare yourself for a dramatic change of perspective.
Before I get into the evidence I want to thank Relic's Angelics, Bosley and Burning for their email participation in the development of this thread. Nikola Tesla used ancient Sanskrit terminology in his descriptions of natural phenomena. As early as 1891 Tesla described the universe as a kinetic system filled with energy which could be harnessed at any location. When I put in Tesla + Eugenics into google I never expected to get a direct response. But, I did... and boy, was I surprised!
The year 2100 will see eugenics universally established. In past ages, the law governing the survival of the fittest roughly weeded out the less desirable strains. Tesla stated that he observed stationary waves during this time. In the Colorado Springs lab, he "recorded" signals of what he believed were extraterrestrial radio signals.

TESLA’S "BIG EYE" FOR REMOTE VIEWING
Nikola Tesla also planned a very special use for his endothermic scalar interferometer. He planned to produce what he called his "big eye to see at a distance."
This is accomplished as shown on the diagram. First, the system is only weakly endothermic, so that only a small amount of energy is extracted from the distant target. Also, the beams are "scanned" by an open receiver, timewise, from side to side and top to bottom. By scanning yet another single beam through the intersection zone and phasing its pulses, an even better representation can be obtained. Thus the receiver produces a representation of the energy extracted from various locations within the distant endothermic zone. By displaying the received signals on an appropriately scanned screen, a representation of the distant scene in the intersection zone can be created. Indeed this is a special kind of "microwave interferometry," and -- with modern techniques -- the imagery obtained might be surprisingly good. With development, it might even become as good as the image presently obtained by side-looking acquisition radars.
Interestingly enough, since scalar EM beams will easily penetrate the earth or the ocean, one can also look beneath the earth or beneath the ocean with this type of scanning scalar interferometer.
The importance of this capability to strategic and tactical reconnaissance is obvious. Camouflage, cover, and concealment have no effect on such a system. One can easily look inside buildings and into underground facilities. With a small system such as this, the U.S. Marines at Khe Sahn would have had little difficulty locating the tunnels continually dug under the perimeter by the Viet Cong. And targets under jungle canopies are directly visible.

A scientific principle is mere theory and without substance until it takes form. That form is called invention. A patent is the certification of a Material Application. The inventor submits in written form a specific example of a concept, a model, which embodies the essence of a scientific principle as applied to said model. (If you suspect I've had some experience in this arena, you'd be right) Bottom line, a Material Application is an invention. Heuristics is a methodology for achieving invention. It is the problem-solving technique most utilized in the invention process.

It seems to me that there are interesting possibilities in the training of animals by electricity. Of course, it's rather out of my province, but the idea of the electrical subjugator appears feasible when one knows the power of electricity and the instinctive fear that brutes have of the unknown. And the electrical method seems more humane than those I believe are in use - the whip, red hot irons, and drugs, which are likely to do permanent injury, while the physical effects of an electric shock are soon gone, only the moral ones remaining.
The subjugator referred to will do the work, but I think an apparatus could be designed that would be less dangerous to the man. I do not desire to be understood as giving the matter deep thought, but believe that if, instead of the armored backpad, the trainer used a wand, with two prongs at one end, better results would follow. This wand would be connected with the supply cables and could be applied to any part of the animal's body at will. Its operation would be precisely the same as the subjugator here illustrated, the two prongs supplying the positive and negative poles of contact found in the flattened wires. With this wand an animal could be simply shocked, stunned or killed, as required.
To cure animals of jumping at men in cages, a screen of stout but flexible wire could be stretched between the trainer and his subject, the wires to be alternately positive and negative, and connected through the regulator with the dynamo. After a couple of springs which would hurl him half insensible back into his corner, the taste for unexpected jumps would leave the brute.

Of particular interest is the hemispherical shell of energy, which years ago I dubbed the "Tesla shield."
As shown on this slide, two scalar hemispherical surfaces are created, using multiple frequency transmitters and truncated Fourier series expansions. Interference of the two scalar hemispheres creates a great, glowing hemispherical shell of ordinary electro-magnetic energy. In 1895, while conducting research with his step-up transformer, Nikola Tesla had his first indications that time and space could be influenced by using highly charged, rotating magnetic fields. A repeat of this very incident would occur years later during the Philadelphia Experiment. Unfortunately, the sailors involved were left outside their time-frame reference for too long with disastrous results.
Tesla's secret time travel experiments would continue on in the hands of others who were not as concerned with humanity as Tesla. We are left with rumors and speculations on who may have become the heirs of Tesla's research -- hopefully, someday these secrets will be revealed once and for all.

Smokey III: Conclusions
Smokey is a remote control plasma gas/crystaline robot. It can scan and photograph the mind of individuals through the retina of the "eye" as well as implant images. It maintains form and responds to remote command as the result of electromagnetic manipulation. It is comprised of dusty plasma, which responds to electromagnetism and can change density to a more substantial crystaline state in order to effect things physically.

Here, I am going to insert the words of our illustrious Ballcap, AKA Bosley, AKA Time Lord, to suggest how Smokey may work:"Thinking back to the closed-circuit camera system they seem to have going on. I keep thinking about that time that Juliet ran to the monitors and was able to immediately bring up Sawyer and Kate running in the jungle.
I think with what we've been shown, everyone has been thinking that the equipment that the Others use seems anitquated... the monitors look like old TVs, the "film" images are rather poor and at times even hard to make out, everything is black and white, etc. I'm thinking instead of it being "old technology", it is in fact VERY advanced. Because I don't think there's a camera involved at all.
Another clue to this was that Kate told Sawyer the camera was broken, yet there they were during their monkey love session.
And now with what you're bringing up (PsychedelicRelic), that sort of explains the "scanning" / MRI-like functions we have speculated about Smokey. If Smokey has the ability to shape-shift and change its size at will, couldn't just a single particle possibly accomplish the same "scanning" ability (photographing the images on the retina)? And in doing this, basically go undetected.
It also ties back with what we came up with long ago that Smokey is still functioning as designed (reporting / transmitting the images he acquires) but perhaps something about him is awry and they don't have complete control.... sort of like a Frankenstein's monster."
And I would add, we hear no sound. We see only images. The "Big Eye" does not transmit sound.

It changed from a gas plasma to crystaline plasma.
Dusty plasmas are interesting because presence of particles significantly alters the charged particle equilibrium leading to different phenomena. It is field of current research. Electrostatic coupling between the grains can vary over a wide range so that the states of the dusty plasma can change from weakly coupled (gaseous) to crystalline. Okay, how were they going to broadcast these life changing vibrations across the planet? There was a broacasting antenna on the island. There was also the Flame Station. The Swan hatch may have had some part in broadcasting these transmissions as well.( I just think it's so funny that they made the energy field purple, like the sky when the hatch was destroyed.) And like this device, the Tesla Purple Energy Shield, whose results are most likely minimal, the Dharma device failed to change the underlying values of man.
