Well I’m sure most of you are stunned that our resident ’Other’ has returned. Seemingly in better shape than before. We could have all sworn that he suffered massive haemorrhaging and died as a result of several burst blood vessels in the brain, all that blood out of the ears and such. However, he returns? Unharmed and usually revitalised. Ever since seeing him in spoiler shots, and now recently in D.O.C., my assumption is that like Claire; all the ‘Others’ have implants/devices.
My theory has always been that Mikhail had an implant, like Claire’s. I would assume this because; like Claire’s symptomatic response to the implant that created her ‘condition’ created a believable and yet very serious life-threatening situation. I believe that most of the ‘Others’ have implants. However, I am focusing on Mikhail’s as to how it seemed that he staged a death. I believe that this implant or device acts when knowing that his status has been commandeered or overthrown. That he had been captured and Ben & Co. knew they would find Mikhail and lead them to ‘Otherville’.
That means if Ben expected Locke turning up to blow-up the Submarine, he knew that Locke would inevitably cross paths with a useful engineer or communications officer, they (Others) would rather not loose him in a attempt to betraying them. They (Others) would not take the chance of him dying and their only human resource to the outside world being lost. Therefore, the Sonic Fence must have some sort of recognition analyser that knows whom has crossed the vertical plane of the Fence, hence crossed the boundary. The device somehow induces a seizure-like trauma that appears to be quite shocking and painful but in one way or another doesn’t actually harm the user (Mikhail). Once they had travelled far enough I believe the implant/device would de-activate and Mikhail would only have to worry about the mess on his shirt and clothes.
In eventuality, they (Others) knew that the Locke and the rest would have to test it out to see if it works and they would not blatantly sacrifice one of their own. I also believe that Ben knew they (Locke & Co.) would take Mikhail as prisoner. I think Ben, who seems to be quite a manipulator, would realize that Mikhail would be caught-out, making it seem like it was Locke’s idea to take him prisoner and that they (Others) knew he would take him prisoner. In addition, that Locke & Co. would believe he died if he went through it like any other person.
Juliet was unconscious throughout most if not all the trip to the Island, and who knows what the ‘Others’ injected or planted into her, seamlessly.
