I think that with Jack's next flashback there will be a huge parallel between Juliet's backstories and Jack's backstories, i.e. that they were both brought to the island to provide medical assistance.
Here's my theory:
Ben is Jacob's son, and Jacob is the main man of the island, the guy who decides who comes and who goes and has the power to orchestrate things like Juliet's ex-husband being hit by a bus at just the right moment. Or, the power to make sure all the right people are on a certain airplane...
For a long time, the island's healing powers kept Ben's tumor from becoming malignant. However, after Desmond's first mishap failing to push the button (when he killed Kelvin), the island's powers began to fade and Ben's tumor became worse. Jacob brought Jack to the island to heal Ben.
Now, I'm not saying that Jack was the sole reason for the crash of 815, I think the crash survivors who are on "the list" serve an entirely different purpose. But remember that Jack is NOT on the list. His only reason for being put on that flight was to save Ben's life.
However, there was a small complication. The island's power was not totally diminished, so even though Ben's tumor was getting bad, it was still being moderately healed by the island. This would have caused all kinds of complications during surgery, so an effort had to be made to completely cut off the source of the healing power.
This is why Ben went to the Swan hatch, he wanted to stop the computer and drain the electromagnetic energy completely (why else do you think he looked so satisfied when the sky turned purple?). He got captured on purpose, having monitored the Swan through the Pearl station for quite some time and learning much about John Locke. After observing Locke, he knew all the right things to say to Locke in order to break his will and stop him from pushing that button.
So here's the kicker...I think Jack's flashback will reveal a key moment that allows us to understand this whole connection. This moment took place not long before flight 815, when Jack was approached by Mittelos Bioscience, who asked if he would be willing to grant them his skilled services very similarly to the way they approached Juliet. Naturally, Jack refused their offer. In the flashback's closing scene, he may have even become "Angry Jack" in their presence, and mockingly taunted them with a snide comment, "the only way I would ever help you people is if I was trapped on a deserted island..."
