I posted this theory a while back. I think it has gained strength with recent events, so I am posting it again.
The main idea is this: The whispers heard when the Others are attacking are their thoughts, detected and transmitted back to the Survivors by the Monster, possibly as a warning.
There are a number of phenomena on the island that seem to involve telepathy: the whispers, visions, prophetic dreams, and the monster itself.
We saw in The Cost of Living that the monster was responsible for the visions of Yemi and almost certainly the dreams about Yemi, so I think these phenomena may all be manifestations of the monster.
Some of the whispers have been about guilt. Sawyer heard Frank Duckett's voice because the monster read his memories and fed them back to him.
Other whispers have been associated with the Others. This goes absolutely for those heard when Jack/Kate/Sawyer/Hurley are captured, and probably those after Cindy was taken.
Rousseau said that she heard the Others' whispering about coming to take the boy. Since they did come and take Walt, I think she was right.
She also attributed the earlier whispers she heard to the Others. In fact, this was the first thing we were told about the Others. I don't think that the writers would have introduced them in this way if those whispers weren't coming from the Others in some way.
But not directly. The Others had no interest in warning anyone that they were coming for the boy.
The Monster seems to have the ability to read thoughts and memories and to transmit them, but why would it do so?
We don't know what the Monster's agenda is. It is not exactly on the side of the survivors, as Eko learned, but I think it is more strongly opposed to the Others.
I think that Ben's objective in coming to the Fuselage camp was to stop Locke pushing the button.
I don't know quite what this would have achieved if Desmond hadn't turned the key, but the Monster was trying to stop this plan. It came to Eko in a dream as Yemi and convinced him that pushing the button was very important.
So, Ben and the Monster are in opposition.
There have been theories before that the Monster kept most of the Others away from the Fuselage camp. I tend to agree now. This would explain why they couldn't rescue Ben, and it may somehow explain the way Ben approached the camp in disguise.
