What if all the memories these people have -- have been made up and implanted. What if there was no plane crash, and all the pieces of the plane were just planted there -- like in the "making of.." that's on one of the first disk's special features. Their paths all cross because the people who made up these "pasts" couldn't come up with enough characters to fill this many people's lives before they were lost. The tie-in is the training video -- it said the Degroots were basing research on BF Skinner -- who believed we as people are only a collection of our memories. What if Locke was never paralyzed?.. the idea that he's been "cured" makes him very loyal to the island (same with Rose). Jin was never impotent?.. great way to get Sun&Jin to believe that they cannot conceive, therefore they won't use birth control(any form, I know it's primitive there) - great way to trick them into having a child on the island. Yemi wasn't the brother of Eko, he's an other, and Eko just thinks (because of his false memories), that Yemi was his brother, that the plane is the one that is in his memory, and these people, the horse, Jack's father, etc. are all on the island and were used to fill the synthetic pasts the survivors have.
Maybe some of them were part of the Others, or the "Dharma initiative", and volunteered to have their memories erased, new ones given, and be part of a huge psych experiment - the one they're now playing out.
You can't do research like this legally and the island, and having this "security system" where it will never be found unless there's an "incident" allows the dharma initiative to do this without having to conform to ethics laws. Maybe this experiment is only one of the six or seven areas of scientific research that is or has taken place on the island. I could go on and on -- this theory explains a lot of the questions that are posed. I leave it at this and hope for some responses.
