I've been working on this theory for a couple weeks, waiting for more evidence, and researching other peoples thoughts on these subjects, and am hoping to get some feedback on this concept I've been developing.
It seems that rebirth is essential part of this show. Rabbits are constantly thrown about the show, as they represent fertility and rebirth, as if the island has a quality of allowing rebirth. We see this when Christian's dead body is reborn on the island, Locke is spiritually reborn with the reaquisition of his legs, and then Locke is again reborn literally after his murder in L.A. To further my point about rebirth, I'm even going to stretch myself to say that when Desmond was in a hatch which exploded while deep underground, he survived with a strange ability to see in both the past and present. I believe he should have died at this point but was reborn with new sight as a gift from the island.
While next weeks episode should reaffirm this idea, I believe that being reborn on the island forever tethers you to it like Horace in the future and perhaps even Ben's mother (who i believe was on the island before she met ben's father but thats another theory). By this I mean that like Alpert said, "once i do this, he'll lose his innocence and forget this happened, and he'll always be one of us". I think this means that Ben is forever connected to the island, and will always be drawn to it, much like Desmond is now a key proponent to the island like Mrs. Hawkings said.
This is all seemingly irrelevant, but it leads to this crucial point. If Christian lived on the island with his son as a healer (Christian was a doctor)and then lost his son in some accident, wouldnt he try to give his son the rebirthing process available to him? Wouldnt this wipe his sons memories and then take away his innocence (or faith?) and forever tie him to the island. It would even reclaim him whenever available, trying to seperate him from the rest of the group each time the planes crash.
Jack was born on the island, he almost died, and then was saved. Christian then escaped with Jack, hoping to break the ties between Jack and the island. Christian forever hated himself for giving up his sons innocence, and at the same time admired Jack's perseverence with faith even when it was feeble. When Christian died, the island hit two birds with one stone, taking the healer and the son. I'm assuming the island will use Christian to help fix this things as he's been doing, but its intentions with Jack are unknown, almost exactly like Jack's intentions with the island are unknown.
I'm almost positive that this is going to be crucial in the future as Jack and Desmond and Locke become a trinity of power on the island, which only becomes symbolically beautiful as they work under the father, Christian.
Please don't be harsh with any gaps I've left although please let me know if you can find any. Theory by WNGYPSY
