While watching LeFleur last week, a had a question I just couldn't shake..."Why did Richard Alpert want the body of the DHARMA guy?" And, "Why was the DHARMA woman so adamant that they bury the bodies of the bad guys?"
Don't get me wrong, I had other questions too, like, "Why doesn't anyone ask Alpert what the island is? Why don't they ask him who he is and what he does to keep his skin looking so healthy?" Alas, I don't expect answers to those questions or else we wouldn't have a suspenseful show.
Back to the bodies. I concluded that she wanted the bodies buried because she didn't want their ghosts to come back. And Richard wanted the DHARMA guy's body because he either (a) wanted to bury him for the same reason, or (b) wanted to make sure that he was NOT buried (possibly as a ghostly recruit).
In other words, I believe that not burying a body means that person or spirit will not be at rest, and therefore, has the potential to become a "ghost", for lack of a better word.
Thinks about it. Here are some examples:
Christian=never buried=ghost
Claire=never buried=ghost
Locke=never buried=well, not sure, but definitely not exactly dead
I'm not counting anything that has come in a dream. Also, I think that not all of Hurley's ghosts are real. Some may be in his mind.
Think of all the people who have been buried...Nicki, Paulo, Danielle, Alex. Think about the last two. Why were they buried? Who buried them? Why take the time? The answer is the same as why the DHARMA woman wanted the bodies buried in LeFleur...she didn't want them to come back.
The island has many "Underworld" references. I think that unless your body is laid to rest, the dead will not be at rest and may linger on the island in one form or another.
It makes me wonder about Alpert...I doubt that ghosts age. Theory by Scott E
