What is Smoky?
I see some definite correlations between Smoky, LOST’s electromagnetic secrets and Forbidden Planet, probably the finest science fiction movies of the 1950’s. Rest assured that the producers and writers of LOST, all sci fi fans, are familiar with this movie.

Forbidden Planet’s story is based on Shakesphere’s The Tempest, same as we suspect other fiction and mythology to be used as a LOST character and storyline base. It starred Leslie Nielson, Walter Pidgeon and Anne Francis.
In a nutshell - a space crew lands on distant Altair to see what happened to the last crew sent there, which never returned. They find Dr. Morbius and his hot young daughter, Altaira, who had previously crashed on the planet. Morbius states that a mysterious force killed his wife and continues to cause destruction on the planet.
Altaira has never seen another man other than her dad. This leads to the inevitable attempts of the captain, J.J. Adams (wait - is that just too close to J.J. Abrams?), to seduce her. Mobius most definitely doesn’t like this (incest overtones).
This “force” is first revealed when it attacks the space crew’s camp. Its appearance is eerily similar to Smoky - black, shapeless and swarming-looking. We are led to believe that this is a electromagnetic force, thanks to Theramin/electronic sound effects and the fact that the space crew’s force field can fend it off.
Forbidden Planet explains its “Smoky” as follows:
Morbius was messing around with a mind machine, which greatly enhanced his intelligence, left on Altair by a long dead race, the Krells.
Eventually, the characters discover that the black cloud, which kills, cuts through metal, etc. is a side effect of the Krells’ mind machine. The mind machine user’s own brain (both Morbius and the Krells) works in concert with the mind machine to creates the black cloud. The cloud is an electronic/electromagnetic personification of the user’s subconscious “ID.” Their selfish, ID desires were being carried out by the killer black cloud as they slept, acting out their subconscious dreams; yes we are talking Freud, big-time, here.
Thus Morbius’ ID has killed his wife and is attacking the space ship crew, to stop them from interfering with his beautiful little world composed of himself and his hot daughter. The Krells also died out by killing each other via the cloud enacting their ID's fanatasies.
Now, recast the Forbidden Planet as the Island. Put Jacob in the shoes of Morbius. LOST Episodes give us evidence that Smoky is intelligent or driven by an intelligent force, plus electromagnetic in nature (as Smoky is stopped by the electric fences). Have the producers/writers inserted this Forbidden Planet concept into LOST?
Could Smoky be Jacob’s only method of enforcing actions necessary to protect the Others and the Losties from screwing up the time travel/timeline on the Island? Could he create Smoky with his electromagnetically altered mind – altered by the Island’s time travel secret, the hydrogen bomb’s radiation, previous electromagnetic phenomena in the vicinity of Desmond’s key turning, etc.? Doesn’t look like Jacob has a body to use in defense of the Island, does it?
Or maybe Alpert or Ben’s mind?
I immediately connected Forbidden Planet’s cloud with LOST when Smoky was introduced – they were just too visually comparable to be coincidence.
Maybe smarter and more scientific LOST fans can make something of this comparison as well as those that have watched Forbidden Planet. Theory by Elegia More
