Since the end of season 4, I've been thinking a lot about Christian Shephard. After reading the post by celine "The Island vs. Evil" I thought I should post my recent thoughts, as they coincide with hers.
Celine theorized that Christian Shephard is evil, and perhaps has somehow usurped Jacob's authority on the island. This meshes well with the thoughts I've recently had.
The writers have made no secret of their love for the Star Wars movies, which even made its way into an episode of season 4 (when Jack picked up Aaron's Millenium Falcon toy). While thinking about this, I realized that the Shephard family has a strikingly similar story to the Skywalker clan.
Think about it it--you have the long lost brother and sister who unknowingly work together, and later find out they're related. This is very Luke-and-Leia-like. Seeing this similarity, I considered that Christian could likely be a Darth Vader type of character. This would make him evil--working for the "dark side". But what I ultimately believe now is that the show is working toward the ultimate Father-Son showdown: Jack vs. Christian.
They've been setting us up for this from the beginning of the show. The two have always been at odds with one another. Christian has continually tried to stifle Jack's ability and potential, while Jack has fought to right his father's wrongs. They have both been each other's worst enemy. Thus, the background has been set, and is pushing us to this final showdown/battle/confrontation when Jack will have to face his father as Luke faced Vader.
To get to this showdown, I believe the writers have set Jack up to be the next island leader. John Locke has many similarities to John the Baptist in the Bible, who was the one that ushered in the coming of Jesus, the true Savior. I believe Locke is in this same sort of role--he's preparing the way for a short time to usher in Jack's leadership role. This will put Jack into a position to face his father in the end, and to defeat the evil on the island in the ultimate showdown of Father vs. Son.

Does that mean Locke is Yoda?
That's a great theory...
The only "problem" I have with this is that I just don't like it. I mean how is this showdown to be caried out? I don't see any kind of physical confrontation happening. That would be really lame. And if this showdown is what the story is leading up to it makes 90% of the story meaningless. I mean, the whole story is filler for a minor flashback character from Season 1? idk, but I don't like it.
The only person on the show that is evil is anthony cooper. christian Shephard is good at heart and that was stressed many times such as in his encounter with Sawyer. I believe Christian did his best as a father for what it is worth. He always tried to make Jack better but some have difficulty understanding that.
This theory has occurred to me too...however I don't like it and will be very disappointed to see this as the outcome of Lost. It does, however, seem at this point that this is the direction the story is going. I am not a fan of Jack (nor Matthew Fox for that matter) and would consider this the ultimate failure to the story on the part of TPTB. Jack and Christian are NOT Darth Vader and Luke Skywalker and Darlton are not George Lucas...let's not try to pretend that they are. (((end rant)))
I like your theory. But thinking more closley at Star Wars, it was Darth Vader who killed the Emperor in the end to save Luke. So maybe Jack and Christian will team up in the end to save the Island from Widmore/Abaddon.
My favorite Star Wars reference is in S3. When Kate, Sawyer, and Alex are trying to resuce Karl, and Sawyer says, "Don't blame me if you are dumb enough to fall for the Wookie prisoner trick"
Let me say first that I didn't mean to imply that this "showdown" would be the ultimate end to the show. I don't necessarily believe that to be the case. In fact, if that was the ultimate end, I might be disappointed too. There's a million unanswered questions that need to be addressed, I just think that this might play a part at some point in the upcoming two seasons. The conflict of the backstories must collide at some point in the "present" (whenever that may be).
I'm also by no means "pretending" that these characters are star wars characters. In fact, I'm not a huge Star Wars fan myself, but I simply noticed the references and saw the similarities. Please don't mistake me for a saber-wielding, cape-wearing Star Wars junkie. (No offense to those who are, of course.)
The idea of Darth Vader helping to kill the emperor in the end is a good thought. That could very well play into the story. But I wonder if the writers would actually copy the storyline, or if they just wanted to integrate some of the themes, i.e., the unkown brother/sister relationship and a distant father. It could be that this is as far as they ever take it.
Finally, this all hinges on the idea of Christian being a bad guy. I can see how some would disagree with that notion, because obviously the writers have not wanted us to know for sure one way or the other yet. Which is why this is a theory--I gotta take a side and run with it. For now I'm landing on the "Christian is Evil" side. Tomorrow I might change my mind though. Who knows? That's part of the brilliance of the show!
I agree with your vision of evil. It is obvious that the producers are delivering two sets of characters: light vs dark. I actually thought like you that Christian was evil and I wrote the theory about it.
But I have had some thoughts and I must say that I might have been wrong about it. Christian seems to be helping the island and the Losties against evil.
I wrote another theory and I invite you to read it. I will not go through the details again, but Christian's name is too meaningful to represent someone evil.
Well I might be wrong of course and you could be right! Hopefully season 5 will gives us more clues.
Team Darlton made Around 15 Months ago , A comparative between Jacob and the Emperor of Star Wars.
They was talking about the fact that he was just nominated but never seen (they said this before "The Man behind the Curtain")
Thank you luca/altair! I had completely forgotten about that reference, but remembered it as soon as I read your comment. It would certainly add some credibility to my theory, it would seem.
Season 4, episode 2, "confirmed dead": Sawyer calls ben "yoda" about 19 minutes in (sans commercials)
Ben: "Mind if I ask you a question James?"
Sawyer: "Yeah, I do."
Ben: "Why did you leave Kate behind?"
Sawyer: "You're wasting your time, Yoda."
No, I think, that Ben is evil, he looks as vampire in the end of this season, haha:))
interesting theory...
