Hello everybody, I'm french so I apologize for mistakes I will possibly make.
With Across the sea, the LOST mythology has been set up as an incredible new version of greek mythology.
First of all I always thought Mother was Gaia, "a primordial deity in the Ancient Greek pantheon and considered a Mother Goddess" (source wikipedia).
Gaia had a lot of children included monsters, that, for me, all together embody Smokey.
But, first of all, be aware that Gaia was created with several other primordial deities such as Ouranos (the sky) and Tartar (the lowest underground place, the jail inside Hell).
From now, we could say Smokey comes from Tartar.
Furthermore, I think Smokey is the equivalent for the greek Erinnyes.
Gaia had a child with Ouranos, Chronos, god of Time. Then Chronos killed his father and the Erinnyes were made of the "black blood" of Ouranos. Then the Erinnyes came down into the Tartar in order to protect it with Cerberus.
Goddesses of Hell, their goal was to embody laws of moral order and had to judge whoever didn't respect them (does it sound familiar ?).
I also think that if Mother chose to keep the boys and always asked them if they loved her, it was to prepare a future mating in order to protect a part of deity.
As Hesiod explains it in his Cosmogony, the goddess Gaia embodies two sides : the creation of harmonious beauty and also chaos from the origins. Gaia comes from Chaos.
But here comes the most amazing connection of the show with Gaia :
In the 1970's, the biologist James Lovelock (what a curious name, isn't it ?!) developped a "Gaia hypothesis" where he explained Gaia was a human being. "The hypothesis proposes that living organisms and inorganic material are part of a dynamic system that shapes the Earth's biosphere, and maintains the Earth as a fit environment for life. In some Gaia theory approaches the Earth itself is viewed as an organism with self-regulatory functions" (wikipedia). Lovelock called it "Gaia's rules".
So, what do you say ?
