I will suggest answers to 2 questions as I cannot see any other logical explaination.
What is Smokie?
Who are Jacob and MIB?
What is a Djinn? I will quote pieces for Wiki and other sites.
In Arabian mythology and Islam, a Djinn (also jinn, genie, from Arabic جني jinnī) is a supernatural creature which occupies a parallel world to that of mankind, and together with humans and angels makes up the three sentient creations of Allah. Possessing free will, Djinn can be either good or evil. In Islamic theology jinn are said to be creatures with free will, made from ‘smokeless fire’.
My thoughts:
Jacob and Richard don't seem to age which suggests the supernatural.
Jacob mentions Free Will to Ben before he gets stabbed and torched.
Good and Evil – Black and White and the “We are the Good guys” references.
Smokeless fire – The Monster
Parallel World – Explains how strange the Island is and how hard it is to find.
Jinn – One of the main characters is called Jin.
Similar to humans, jinn have free will allowing them to follow any religion they choose. They are usually invisible to humans and humans do not appear clear to them. However, jinn often harass and even possess humans, for various reasons, such as romantic infatuation, revenge, or because of a deal made with a practitioner of black magic.
Jinns have the power to travel large distances extremely quickly and live in remote areas, mountains, seas, trees, and the air, in their own communities. Like humans, jinns will also be judged on the Day of Judgment and will be sent to Heaven or Hell according to their deeds.
My thoughts:
Day of Judgement – It only ends once speech.
Lives in remote areas such as a cabin, a hole, under a wall or in a foot.
Possess Humans.
Travel large distances – Jacob gets around considering there is no “easy” way off the island, as does Richard (pre Dharma sub).
Harass – John Locke has been harassed ever so slightly.
Invisible to humans - Possible whispers connection
Every person is assigned a special jinn to them, also called a qareen, the jinns that whisper into your soul and tell you to give into your evil desires. Muhammad's jinn turned into a Muslim jinn, on the recitation of the Qur'an, as the jinn found it very beautiful.
My thoughts:
Locke – It was beautiful
Eko – That is not what I saw.
Whispers
Hurley was harassed by Dave to give in to his evil desires, food.
Abd Allah ibn Mas'ud , who was accompanying Muhammad when the jinn came to hear his recitation of the Quran, described them as creatures of different forms; some resembling vultures and snakes, others tall black men in white garbs. They may even appear as dragons, onagers, or a number of other animals. In addition to their animal forms, the jinn occasionally assume human form to mislead and destroy their human victims. One such jinni who had assumed the form of a beautiful woman was identified because of her beastly feet by her human victim, who killed her by throwing a rope around her neck and dragging her behind his camel. This type of jinn is called mardāzmā, (tester of men) among the Baluch people. Muhammad is also said to have told the jinn that they may subsist on bones, which will grow flesh again as soon as they touch them.
Muslims believe that the Jinn account for much of the "magic" perceived by humans, cooperating with magicians to lift items in the air unseen, delivering hidden truths to fortune tellers, and mimicking the voices of deceased humans during séances.
My thoughts:
Mimicking the voices of deceased humans – It will come back around.
Tester of Men – Charlie and his smack/guitar. Ben and his Tumour/Alex, Jack and appendix/rescue, Locke’s entire life.
Talking various forms – Horse, Yemi, Hurley bird ect
From Lostpedia
The djinn are described as living in colonies (there are several "wisps" of smoke that make up the Monster) often in a particular place (The Temple, Dark Territory, etc.) While djinn are said to be made from "smokeless fire", it is possible the producers have twisted the typical definition of djinn to create the Monster.
Djinn are supposed to be much stronger than humans (easily grabs people, uproots trees, etc.) and often harass people. Sometimes, djinn possess people or duplicate their form (for example, the manifestation of Yemi?) The Qur'an described them as creatures of different forms; some resembling vultures and snakes, or as dragons, or a number of other animals. (May explain Hurley Bird?)
The use of Hieroglyphics throughout the show may be a hint to the Monster's origin and/or background. While djinn are from Arabian folklore, the producers may extend djinn lore to the Egyptian era.
All this evidence suggests that Jacob, Smokie and MIB are Djinns.
Perhaps Richard is a lesser Djinn. There is definitly some Djinn activity on that crazy island.
