Care was taken tonight to point out the compass. The compass that John gives to Richard. The compass that Richard than gives to John, and so on and so forth. This giving of the compass has gone on an unknown amount of times, perhaps thousands, even millions of years.
The compass is stuck in a time loop from which it cannot escape. It bears witness to many things, unable to change anything, but still points true north.
My supposition is that the Compass is an analogy for Jacob. Jacob, much like the compass, is stuck in a loop from which he cannot escape. He has born witness to things which we as viewers have gotten teasers to. He has witnessed these things countless times, constantly unable to change anything, forever stuck knowing the correct course, but unable to change anything.
Perhaps this is why, much like John needed to die, Jacob needs to die. This liberation will somehow grant him power. Perhaps Richard has imprisoned him using the ring of smoke. Jacob has been trying each and every loop to change minor things, generating list after list in the hopes of finding a person, perhaps like Desmond, that can help him guide everybody down the correct course.
I see two major possibilities for Locke needing to kill Jacob. First, other forces wants Locke to kill Jacob. Second, Jacob wants Locke to kill him. I subscribe to the second choice, do mostly to Jacob asking John for help. Perhaps Jacob has realized the only way to end the loop is to die, or perhaps he will be reborn, much like John was. Perhaps his death will somehow liberate him from his seeming imprisonment. Or perhaps it will simply end his misery. Either way, I am sure that TPTB have things well planned out.
