So I'm of the opinion that the "What lies in the Shadow" question that Illana rolls out, does have something to do with the 4-toed statue.
Why?
Honestly I don't have anything concrete, but I believe from a story perspective, it would really place a lot more signficance on what the statue means or what it does. If the phrase is more than just a password, then perhaps the statue is a marker for something important. Does is mark where Jacob is? Where the magic box is? Where Jughead is burried? Or more likely where some other Island artifact is?
I don't think that Illana could be part of the Others. Why? Ben would know of her. Now perhaps he does, but based on their interactions so far, it hasn't really looked that way.
I'm more of the belief that she is either working with Widmore to retake the island, or perhaps with Dharma officials or the US Military.
Dharma had people off island. I'd have trouble believing they simply gave up and never tried to find the island again or finish their work there.
Likewise the military lost a very large nuclear weapon on the island. It would seem unlikely that they simply left it.
So what is in the the silver box? Ummmmmmmm,,, I don't know. Locke's coffin sounds like a fun idea. But if it is, that would seem to rule out Illana's involvement with Dharma or the Military, as they wouldn't likely be the kind to use a dead body to solve a problem. So if it is Locke's body, she'd have to be working with Widmore.
Otherwise it is some sort of equipment. Perhaps the equipment that is needed to bring the losties to the future, or to defuse/activate a nuclear devise.
An observation though. The Others as well as Daniel's group were both portrayed as being fairly evil initially, but turned out not to be so bad. So Illana seems highly suspicious. But I'll wager she's not there for malicious intent.
The question is though, is she there with a scientific purpose, or a spiritual purpose. Theory by Locke4God
