Seeing as there has been a wee spell of theories recently speculating on the possibility of MIB and Jacob being revealed as Charlie Hume and Aaron respectively I though it might be worth just running through their histories, similarities and differences to identify if there is indeed a case to be made.
N.B: THIS ‘THEORY” IS PURELY INSPIRED BY THE LAST SPATE AND I AM SIMPLY ATTEMPTING TO EXAMINE AND ADD TO THESE EXISTING IDEAS SO CRED WHERE CRED’S DUE.
CHARLIE HUME
Family History:
• Widmore (Granddad)
• Ellie (Great Auntie – once removed?)
• Faraday (Uncle)
• Penny (Mum)
• Desmond (Dad)
Notes:
Spends his early years on the high seas with loved up Mum and Dad having had no contact with other family members.
Witnessed Ben attempt to kill his mother (having just shot his father).
Two members of his family are former leaders of the Others.
AARON
Family History:
• Claire (Mum)
• Christian (Granddad)
• Jack (Uncle)
• Claire’s Mum (Grandma)
• Thomas (Absent Dad)
Indirect Family:
• Kate (surrogate Mum)
• Charlie Pace (surrogate Dad)
Notes:
Spent his first few months on the Island and was also fondly watched over by Sun, Sawyer, Locke, as well as scarily watched over by Danielle.
Used to the Island and could ‘sleep through anything’.
Changed Mum to Kate and brought to nice house in LA. Uncle Jack briefly became surrogate Dad then buggered off leaving Aaron left to ask why he’s not getting his favourite bedtime storyteller sessions anymore.
Surrogate Mum Kate then abandons him in the middle of the night in a motel room, passing him over to new but real Grandma.
LINKS BETWEEN AARON AND CHARLIE
Both Aarons father, Thomas and Charlie’s Father, Desmond painted similar images (Desmond Swan Mural and Thomas’s collection of work – one of which can be found in Widmore’s office).
Aaron’s brief surrogate father’s fated death, Charlie Pace, was prevented three times by Des and their close friendship prompted Des to honour his memory by naming his own son after him.
Because Des saved Charlie 3 times he created the circumstances to allow Charlie to speak to Penny and alert he to their general whereabouts of the Island; subsequently leading to the Oceanic 6’s rescue and Charlie Hume conception.
Both are possibly ‘infected ‘ by the electromagnetic properties of the Island – Des’s sperm could certainly have been affected and he took daily injections of who-knows-what during his three years in the Swan and Aaron was directly exposed to the Island and also received injections. Widmore may also have passed ‘special island properties’ down to Penny from the years he spent on the Island so Charlie could have doubly inherited island properties from both parents.
Both had unconventional early life upbringings.
DIFFERENCES BETWEEN AARON AND CHARLIE
Aaron was born on the Island, Charlie off the Island.
Charlie’s raised by his real Mum and Dad (up until age three at least). Aaron’s not.
SUMMARY OF LINKS & DIFFERENCES
There are certainly 2 sides in terms of their family history.
They both share a strong connection to the island and may be physically linked to the properties of the island either through direct contact (Aaron) or inheritance (Charlie).
Charlie’s lineage links him to the ‘ownership’ of the Island (Widmore and Ellie) whilst Aaron was born on the island and has close family members lost there (although it is probable that Des will be lost to Charlie in season 6 from the warning given by Ellie ‘the Island’s not done with you Desmond’). There is strong motivation for the two of them to seek out the Island.
There is great potential for the two of them to be great friends or great enemies.
LINKS TO MIB AND JACOB
The main arguments for MIB/Jacob being Charlie/Aaron as I see it are:
1. MIB and Jacob seem kind of hip and modern. They neither seem old fashioned in the way they talk or dress.
2. Talk of the ‘loophole’ combined with the time travel of season 5 makes it less fanciful that we could have characters who are children in the current narrative timeline ending up in the past and turning out to be existing characters. Miles/baby Miles was a taster of the possibilities for this.
3. Jacob (and probably MIB) can harness the properties of the Island which I theorised in the section above could be down to Aaron and Charlie’s inherited/birth links.
4. Ben is MIB’s fall guy. Charlie has reason to mess with Ben after seeing him shoot his Dad and try to kill his Mum.
5. Desmond’s frustration towards WHH – I refer to his ‘what’s the point, I’ve already tried to save you three times Charlie [Pace]’ comment – perhaps can be seen to reflect MIB’s "They come. They fight, They destroy. They corrupt. It always ends the same attitude”.
6. Aaron’s family history has strong medical (Jack and Christian) and artistic (Thomas) links, which seem to reflect Jacob’s artistic (Tapestry weaving) and healing skills.
CONCLUSION
I am by no means convinced that Aaron and Charlie are Jacob and MIB but I find the similarities and (admittedly sparse) evidence interesting nonetheless.
There is also way too much bizarreness surrounding the nature of Jacob and MIB, in particular how can MIB become Flocke and what is Smokey, that make me think there’s no way they can be baby faced Turnip Head and Mini-Des.
Also I wonder how Ji Yeon fits into the equation if this was to transpire. Ji Yeon was conceived on the Island and born off Island so has commonalities with both Aaron and Charlie. Like Aaron she has also been abandoned by her mother lost to the Island and has never met her father, and like Charlie she has a grand empirical lineage to great wealth and powerful men. But then she could also be the perfect reason the boys don’t get on (the new L-triangle)?
