I'll try to make this brief and simple!
Knowledge is power. At this point in the game, the Losties have the most. They know of current and future events. They know the safest place on the island in 12 years or so will be with the "hostiles/others" during the purge.
What if they actually plan the purge? We all know Ben couldn't (physically) have pulled this off alone. He had to have had some help from other Dharma staff willing to join the hostiles. Since we all know Ben was gasing his dad in the van while someone else had to have been at the Tempest. I think that this help was Jack and the gang. Ben is really a "public pawn" for their life saving adventure. They grow and mold him play the part, and in time, he molds them. They are never meant to go back to the future, but to stay in the "past". Instead, they join and lead the hostiles. I think their society would be one to regard time travelers very highly. I imagine the ancient island dwellers who found Charlotte worshiped her. But that's a whole other story.
It's like Daniel says, time can't be changed. They were all meant to go back because they are still there. They planned the purge, lived on in hiding (from their younger selves) and lead the hostiles. If they wouldn't have gone back to the 70's, they would have become "lost" in time.
Ben's financial power and knowledge has always been a mystery, I think the Losties are behind it all.
As we near the end of the LOST story, I think yes, John Locke will now lead the island inhabitants, Jack and the gang are due for a rest and it's his time.
This explains, Christian's role as a time coach....why Ben didn't welcome the flight 815 folks to the camp (they were already there)....why he had to keep Juliette there against her will and why she was "kicked out" when they left for the Temple....the need for lists with name, etc.
The only missing piece is Jacob...thoughts?? Theory by Angie
