Roger Linus has always been somewhat of a mystery to me.
Why?
Something about Roger that has always never sat right with me is what exactly....no,no,no...who exactly is Roger Linus.
Grieving husband?Janitor?Drunk?Abusive father?Yes.Roger is all these things...but I think there is more to Ben's father then Dad of the year.
When I was a teenager,I saw this Chow-young fat movie called "A better tomorrow"(don't worry,I'm getting to my theory-keep reading),
In the movie,Chow plays a #1 hit-man who gets shot in his kneecap and falls from grace only to become a homeless bum who Windex people's windshields all day and drinks(I'm not gonna tell you anymore about the movie-It's good, rent it-it's in the foreign or action section).
Well...I was watching the episode with Ben and his father and it made me think of the CYF movie and it hit me!what did Roger Linus do before Ben? I think he was some type of Science researcher or maybe even a lab assistant who fell from grace(after Ben's mother died) and began a downward spiral of drinking and self doubt.Maybe this effected his job to where he was no longer respected as a peer and even was let go for his drinking(kinda like Christian,Jack, and Frank Lapidus-all men who are top in there jobs who have all been let go due to drinking or drug use). Why is this? what makes me think this?
Examples/Reasons....
1)the picture of Roger and Emily Linus having a picnic-they looked very happy and well dressed(signs of non abuse, non drinking, and a descent income).
2)When Roger got his work assignment,he was ticked!"Janitor! You people said that I would be saving the world, doing research and experiments!"(why would he say that?maybe the "workman" title was truly beneath him?).
Roger has a lot of regret(and I mean a lot!) and great loss in his life. We've all been there at some point in are lives and I'm sure we can all relate to Roger in one way or another. We know he regrets how he treated Ben minutes before his demise.Roger(like Jack or Sawyer) was too stubborn to admit he was wrong and apologize to Ben which ultimately lead to his death.this also makes me think that he regrets giving up hope(and life) and just settling to being a janitor for the past twenty-some odd years.
And this being said...why would Horace offer a job to Roger 8 years later?I mean, you could get a janitor anywhere. Why Roger?Horace (as far as we know) helped Roger with Ben in 1965 and took him to the hospital.Did they become friends and hang out all the time?maybe?maybe not? So why Roger? and why drag this poor broken man and his son to Fantasy Island to pick up trash?...
I think when Horace ran Roger to the hospital, that maybe the two men(and even Olivia-she was there also)struck up a conversation(possibly in the waiting room) and Roger could have said he was a Scientist.this, striking Horace interest,he kept Roger in the back of his mind and maybe years later when DI was recruiting,Horace was like "Hey!I know someone we can recruit that could possibly be a great addition to the team."But when he got in touch with Roger many years later,he saw that Roger was a shell of a man he once was(and a drunk!).Horace, feeling sorry for Roger and Ben still offered Roger a job(possibly even lying about what position Rog would get just to get them to the island).Maybe Horace thought that it might sober him up and help Roger's relationship with Ben(y'know, change of scenery). But that was not the case at all(the
island did improve Roger's beer drinking skills and abusive back hand).
I believe Roger was a Scientist(of some sort) and fell from grace.
Roger,Jack, and Christian's drinking part of their story are all eerily mirroring each other(with the exception of Jack or Christian losing their wives or girl friends to child birth).
Sooooo! that's my theory(long and drawn out).thanks for bearing with me and I hope y'all enjoy.....
