I am in line to get totally hammered for this one, so bring it on.
I was thinking about the list of leaders we have. But Jack, not only is the main protagonist of this show, but was dubbed as "the" leader right from the beginning.
Now you have Richard, and Locke, and Widmore, and Ben, Sawyer, Horace, Jacob, and some other people in leadership roles, but Jack, is and always has been the character identified with leadership.
So outside of the specifics of what I think that Jack is going to do in the end, he is going to lead.
Part II
Of course you are all well aware of Christian's presence from day one. He has been waiting, as he said, for Jack to complete his work. And if he was waiting for that, then he is waiting to meet Jack himself once it's done. Jack saw images of his father, Sawyer reminded him, and Locke outright told him Christian was there. Jack will meet his father in season 6, perhaps even in this season's finale.
Part III
So Jack will meet Christian, and he will lead. But what do those have to do with one another. Well two things come to mind, first is that Christian is aware of and tied to Jacob in some way, and lord knows what that means, but regardless it means that Jack is going to meet Jacob.
The second thing it means is that given Jack's destiny to lead, his leadership role will be put into the service of Jacob's will. And the work that Christian has been waiting for Jack to do, was to accept his role.
Part IV
So Jack had to accept his role. But how did he do that? Did Locke beat it into him, showing him time and time again that the island was special, opening hatches, pushing and not pushing buttons, telling him not to summon the freighter only for dissaster to happen and prove Locke right, making the island dissappear in front of him, and finally coming to him with proof that his father lived on? Yep.
Locke showed Jack the way so that Jack could find his purpose. Jack is going to help Jacob, but he needed to be shown the way, and thus Jacob needed Locke to help him get Jack.
Part V
I really believe the above speculation is all but solid. It's going to happen in one way or another. But there are a lot of questions left.
What in the hell does Christian have to do with anything? He's connected to the island. Has to be. And his appearance will not be the same as Yemi's, where the Yemi Eko saw was in no way his brother other than in appearance. Christian will be Christian, whether he is dead or not. He's been to the island before, and by whatever means or for whatever purpose he left, he knew all along about the Island and Jack's role on it.
Part VI
And what about Jack's purpose. It is to lead. It is to meet his father, who will lead him to Jacob, who will give Jack the playbook to lead from. But Jacob is imprissoned, and Jack's goal will first be to free him.
Afterwards, what does he lead? What does he have to do? He has to save the island, or the world, or the timeline, or something else insanely catastrophic.
Dharma was attempting to fix this same problem before the incident, and definately before the purge. In other words the Island knew this problem needed to be fixed, and it brought Dharma there specifically to fix it. Sadly they were murdered, and the Island begin working to find another way to solve the problem.
Bring on the losties.
Part VII
Everybody else fits in as so.
When the island brought Dharma on, it let it's Native leadership know. Richard was told by the island that Dharma had work to do, and Charles set terms with Dharma's leaders.
The alliance was tenuous however. The run of the mill Dharma employee and common Other member wouldn't have understood. The Others afterall had just finished fighting off the US Military. So it was kept by Charles, Richard, Horace and perhaps a few others on the down low in order not to arouse suspicion.
For a time Richard moved his people away from the temple as a deception to them to make it appear as though they were avoiding capture or open war. Hence Richard was scraggly when he first met Ben is '73.
With the Swan project well underway and the truce in place however, Richard and Charles moved their people back in time for Richard to take a bath in the temple and appear clean cut to Sawyer for their meeting in '74.
But Ben returned to the Other in '77 unfortunately, openly challenged Charles in '88 by deciding not to kill Alex, and outed his alliance with Dharma in '92. Using the alliance, and Dharma's work as a negative he easily swayed opinion to purge them, and banish Widmore to solify his power.
But what of Jacob? Well Ben imprissoned him so that Richard could no longer speak to him, and told Richard that Jacob had sent word that he would only communicate with Ben. Richard was now powerless. He needed help.
Part VIII
The Others had been brought to the Island a long time ago as human protectors of the Island. It granted one of it's member, Richard, long life to carry on the knowledge of their mission, but to protect itself, Richard was never to take leadership for himself.
Now what's important to note is that the island is sentient. It's aware of itself, but how? Well how is it that you are? How are you reading this now, and not just reading it, but are aware that you are reading it, and can remember what you read?
You have nerves, and a large clump of them that bind together and store electric current and chemicals that are read by other nerves to form self awareness. Well,,,,, so does the island.
The island has on it a nearly unlimited supply of energy, allowing it to become aware of itself, to communicate with others in an almost psychic manner, and,,,,,,,,,,
To move itself in time. I've tried to explain this phenomenon, but I'll spare you suffice it to say that the Island can move itself perpetually forward and backward in time, making it accessible only in the rare case that it passes into the present time. Another form of protection to go along with its human protectors.
Part IX
But so what? Well the Island forsaw its own demise, or perhaps the demise of the world at large and it sought to fix it. That doesn't mean that it literally looked into the future, and so it wouldn't create any complications with WHH, but it merely pieced together a sequence of events to determine things would end badly, or used the Valenzetti equation to calculate this end. It's tough to say, but regardless, the end was near.
So it drew to it the Blackrock and itself captain Alvar Hanso, who was destined to father a lineage that would rediscover the island and bring along the Dharma Initiave, which is exactly what the Island wanted to solve its problem.
Part X
The end was coming though. The formula or the Island's own forsight told it so, and so no matter what it tried to do to stop the inevitable end, it's course kept getting corrected.
And so well in advance the Island set up counter measures. Once it had captured the Black Rock and set in motion events to bring Dharma on, it began seaking out help in case something went wrong, a back up plan. Richard and Widmore helped to stear our Losties to the Island so that they could defend the process of fixing the problem, and sure enough in the early days of gathering Jack, Locke, and company, Ben pulled the plug on Dharma.
It became necessary for the losties now, to not only protect Dharma, but to finish their work, and so Jack was lead through many many hoops, to find Jacob, who Ben had imprissoned in his own interest, so that he might free him and finish saving the Island.
Part XI
So who is Jacob? Well Jacob is the one who sacrafised himself in order to find the answer. When the Island recognized its impending end, it was already too late, and Jacob choose to sacrifise himself by turning the wheel the Other's built around the Island's energy source in order to manipulate time further that it could independently.
The Island lept back in time, gathering the Black Rocke as it went and setting in motion the events leading to Dharma, the Purge, and Jack's growth into the ultimate savior of the Island.
But Jacob meanwhile, as the one who sacrifised himself in order for it to happen. Well he leapt into a time in the future just as Locke and Ben did upon turning the wheel, but the difference being, he future did not exist yet. Thus the island used it's power to maintain contact with Jacob's spirit in the future in order to keep him alive. Jacob had been the leader of the Others, and this is why he is held in such high regard to Richard and the Others.
Part XII
"The Incident" unfortunately led to a delay in Dharma's work, and was an unfortunately side effect of the Island's attempt to create a backup plan by using the losties. In other words, it was another form of course correction, just as Ben's purging of Dharma, in order to prevent their task from being completed.
A number of items play into this. In short, Hurley will decided to sabotage the Swan. The revelation of Jack, Sawyer, Kate and the other losties as imposters will serve as a distraction, and Miles growing love of his father will lead to him making physical contact with his baby self. And don't forget Daniel is going to do some heavy tinkering along side Hurley in a belated attempt to make changes as well.
Compile that with the fact that Sun's determination to find Jin will lead Locke to use him as a lure to drag all of the losties back to the future, and you have one heck of an incident.
And don't forget that Miles will die, leaving his lifeforce or spirit held within his baby form, giving his baby form the ability to speak with other spirits.
Part XIII
And that's pretty much it.
In the end, Jack will lead the effort to reach out to Jacob in the future, as yet non-existent future to make it real. Locke will lead the other's whose purpose all along was to protect the island, in an attempt to help, and the followers of Ben will be bent on stopping them.
Because never understood. He never got over his sad upbringing. He never fought for what was right, only for himself.
His judgement at the feet of smokey as the warning from Alex following, only serves as a reminder that he is being kept in check, not that he is destined for a great purpose.
Ben needs attention, he needs purpose, and he's unwilling to sacrafise himself as Jacob did to make it happen. Instead he'll go the other way, completely oblivious that his actions are leading to the end the Island has been trying to avoid all along.
Reaching out to Jacob in the future that doesn't exist and leaping into that future is the purpose of our losties. They are avoiding the fate of the island, and avoiding the notion that destiny cannot be changed.
