1st.the facts and what we(the viewer)knows......
Is Charlie dead?It appears to be.
-He was suppose to die many of times.
-he drowned in the looking glass.
-Charlie says"I am dead,but I'm here"
Is Charlie alive?It appears to be.
-He appears to Hurley.
-He appears to the patient at Santa Rosa who points this out to Hurley first before Hurley actually sees him.
-He talks to Hurley,he even says that he has to go back to the island cause they need him.
-Charlie physically slaps Hurley.
-Charlie says"I am dead,but I'm here"
Weird facts.....
-Charlie appears to Claire(but is actually Sawyer) after her house blows up and she is in and out of it.
-did people at the circle K see Charlie?(cause we know that "strange things are a foot at the Circle K"..heh,just keeping up with the theme of my post).
-Charlie had a hair cut and different clothes from when he died(kinda like Christian in his island garb).
-Charlie talks about the O6 and how they have to go back.If this is the case...Charlie is somehow alive.why?Miles said that the dead have no brainwaves and cannot THINK and talk about current stuff,ONLY what they know and what has come before...NO NEW info(note-Charlie died before the o6 was rescued and could not have known how things turned out).
-Charlie was in the looking glass.It flashed with the island(so did Jin floating in the proximity of the island).
-Charlie lies about knowing how to swim(prob cause he was high) in season one,but it turns out he's an excellent swimmer!

-Charlie is an expert in all things musical.
What is a HERO?Someone who goes above and beyond to perform a Heroic deed without thinking of one's own personal safety and life.
Charlie is a Hero.A true deep blue Hero.
-He save Nadia.
-He saves Jack in the tunnel.
-He saves kidnapped Aaron.
-He saves(or so he thinks) the 815'rs.
-and he attempts to save Claire many of times.
This guy has more Hero moments than Superman.
Now that I put that out there.....
I think(this is my theory) that Charlie is alive,living in 1974 and so on.and that he is the programmer of the looking glass and that he told Hurley about 316 and gave him the guitar case(I actually think it's one of Charlie's cases and it might even have one of his guitars in it).WHAT!WHY?HOW?
It's a bit hard to kill yourself(especially drowning one's self)your body has self preservation instincts,it would fight.maybe Charlie tried to hold his breath until he died and at the last minute his body started to fight and he might have hit an air pocket in the room(yes there is an air pocket in the room and that's not my opinion,it's plain hard science).What if Charlie was in this air pocket for hours,maybe even a day or two(you would be surprised what human survival can accomplish).If the looking glass flashed to 1974,there would be no water in it and Charlie would be safe.Yeah,people might freak out,maybe no one was there at the time or even maybe the looking glass was not there and he just swam upwards to the surface and is wondering around the island completely confused as to what has happened(I would be).Maybe,just maybe Charlie is with the Others or even ending up keeping his mouth shut and joined the DI and was assigned to the looking glass(and even programmed it! -this would also explain why we have not seen him in the 70's.
I know this is a bit much,but now that Time travel and flashing and coming back to life has been put into play,we as the fans have to re-open closed theories and re-examine them.I'm not saying I'm right,I'm just saying What-if?
