The Island and World Religions by John Max

Based on the episode "Across the Sea," I've come to the conclusion that the island and the light are supposed to be the basis of the modern religions of the world.

The fact that we've seen people come and go off the island makes me believe that stories about the island have made it to the outside world. These stories must have referenced a man named Jacob and his twin brother, an eternal light that is "life, death, and rebirth", a pillar of smoke, a blessed cup of wine, ghostly encounters with the dead, etc. In their retelling over the millennia, these stories have been refined and have taken the shape of the major religions across the globe. The light has taken the name of "God", Jacob and his twin brother are prominent figures in the Old Testament, the island is a paradise, the dead can be resurrected, and so-on and so-on.

Over the years, we have seen aspects of different religions and philosophies on the island, not because those schools-of-thought have been brought to the island, but rather those philosophical and religious beliefs have been brought to the rest of the world from the island. Or, maybe I’m totally wrong.

One thing’s for sure though, the show is totally awesome and I’m sad to see it end.
