In "The Substitute", Sawyer remarks to Fake Locke, "You're not Locke." He knows this because, as he states, "You aren't scared like Locke. You're confident."
In the Alt timeline, there is one person who was scared all of the time in the previous timeline, and is now confident.
And that's Hurley.
We will find out that Hurley will take Jacob's place on The Island, and The Black Smoke will take Hurley's place in the alt timeline.
Certainly I have nothing to substantiate this claim other than what I noticed in this episode, so we will have to see if this plays out and how, since we have no idea how the Alt Timeline is affected by the original Timeline.
