In short, yin-yang duality is, on multiple levels, the organizing principle of Lost, and it also explains the identity of the island. Many people have provided wonderful feedback over the years, and so this is largely a product of an ongoing conversation with the Lost community.

This is a very short version of what was once an overly-detailed theory:

Walt's Significance in Season 6 by Kyle

    First off, the setup:

It's been obvious to all of us that Walt is somehow special. And he's essentially been missing from the show since season 1. Yet, for some reason, almost every single time we see him thereafter, they reveal yet another "power" that he has. If they intended to just leave him out of the story like Libby and not expound further, I don't think they would make a point of showing more powers every time he shows up. I also can't imagine them just simply throwing in this kid and saying "Oh look, he has powers. Cool.". I think there has to be more to it.

I always looked at the wheel being dislodged from its axis as a direct result of Ben turning the Frozen Wheel in 2004, and that something about the way he was able to gain purchase/leverage against the ice that had built up, caused the wheel was moved off its central axis. I thought that the center spoke of the wheel literally bumping against the "Exotic Dark Matter" (or whatever causes the white flash/green glow) behind the wall was what was causing the Time-Skipping-Flashes. By this logic, the central spoke of the wheel would be the needle of the turn-table in Daniel Faraday's skipping record analogy.

Good vs. Evil. Who is tied in to which side? The loophole is complete. MIB seems to have won, but who did he employ to get what he wanted? Remember that Jacob was responsible for everything - he touched even Locke, who it seems is the pawn of MIB. Why would he do that?

I am not a literary scholar. I have not read any of the books on the Lost reading list. So why would you want to read my theory? Well I think looking at concepts is the way to go. It’s too easy to get lost in the narrative of Lost. I don’t understand what a Heisenberg compensator does and neither do the writers of Star Trek for that matter. I can understand the concept of it though, that it allows transportation to be possible despite scientific proof by some scientist and some uncertainty principle... If you don’t like this theory as an explanation for what’s happening in Lost then enjoy it as fanfiction.

Why we shouldn't trust Eloise Hawking by Ricardus Alpert

Eloise Hawking is a fascinating character. As far as agendas come, hers is really hard to figure out, but there's one thing I'm completely sure of. We shouldn't trust her. Personally, I was convinced she's up to no good ever since "This Place is Death." Why? One reason- Christian Shepard. When Christian meets Locke at the well, he tells him that "Eloise Hawking will tell you exactly how to come back." That really raised my suspicious at the time. Even though that was long before we heard about MIB, or had any reason to think Smokey was acting against Jacob, I couldn't shake off the feeling Christian is up to no good ever since "Cabin Fever." He's extremely malevolent, and seemingly sympathetic at the same time. Almost like a Satanic figure. So the fact that Chrisitan was so convinced Eloise would help Locke certainly seemed suspicious to me. Given how most have speculated Christian is most l! ikely MIB, it should certainly raise our suspicious now.

Hello Everyone at DarkUfo…long-time lurker, first time theory poster (though I have commented from time-to-time). I want to preface this theory with the fact that this is more a series of thoughts and reflections on the events that have unfolded from season 1 through season 5. I DO NOT, however, apologize if any of these ideas have been posted before because…seriously folks, we’re all watching the same show. This show is head-and-shoulders above the rest as far as sophistication and for anyone who has been sticking with the show for this long, and is still an avid fan, it’s beyond plausible that many of us out there are thinking the same things. So, please, let’s keep it in perspective. None of us are making money from posting these theories, no one is intentionally ripping each other off…if we have similar ideas and theories, let’s look at it as a good sign that we’re all on the same wavelen! gth and we might actually be prepared to figure this whole puzzle out as they reveal the final season to us.

Okay…sorry for the little rant there…on to the theory/reflections…

Hello everyone. I am a long time lurker, first time poster. I have been rewatching the seasons for the umpteenth time in hopes of finishing them all before Season 6 begins and in doing so I came up with a theory I believe could be accurate, however where better to turn to for constructive criticism then the good folks here at DarkUfo. So before I begin I must say this theory is very straight forward. My theory doesn't answer every question to Lost, it really focuses on the "why" of the situation.

So before I tell you my straight forward theory on the show, I will highlight some of the major occurrences or themes in the show that I drew from for my theory.

I have absolutely no facts to support this theory---just some random thoughts.

Janitors on this show have a long and proud history of being more than they appear. Michael lied about his identity to become a janitor on the Kahana; Ben was an Other undercover in DHARMA, working as a janitor; Jack was a surgeon undercover as a janitor in '70s DHARMA. Roger Linus, a DHARMA janitor, was the father of Island King Ben.

Life and death is a huge theme in Lost. I’ve been wondering what the rules are regarding changes in the timeline. We’ve heard Faraday’s explanation of pebbles and boulders, albeit in a deleted scene, and I can’t help but wonder about Michael and why the “island” wouldn’t let him die. It’s as though the island was protecting the timeline because Michael was needed at a later point. If that’s the case, then “boulders” don’t seem to be allowed. Why didn’t Michael have the free will to off himself?

My thesis: Both "Whatever happened, happened" (WHH) and "Alternate Timelines" (Alt) can co-exist.

How? The incident always occurred, and since 1977 two single parallel timelines have existed. (Giving us a ‘Y’ shaped timeline)

A big question from early on is why Ben got cancer when the island had such fantastic healing properties. I posted some material on astral projection mythology last night, and one cause of this phenomenon is said to be surgery. I believe that Ben’s surgery was a way for Ben to project himself off the island “naturally” while undergoing surgery in order to help Jacob without raising MIB’s suspicions by turning the wheel or relinquishing his leadership. The question I have yet to answer is what exactly he accomplished. There just is not enough information, and that could be a gigantic reveal next season.

Simply pulling definitions from Wikipedia, here is the information on “Astral Projection” and “Silver Cord.” Everything from here down is from Wikipedia, but a lot of the secrets from the show seem to be clearly referenced in this definition:

Meta-Narrative Debate Rather than Good Vs. Evil by Dan

Many theories try to situate characters as to how good or evil they are. Is Ben good or is he bad? Who will be good Jack or Locke? Is Sawyer right to beat Jack senseless? Should Locke have knifed Naomi? Man of faith vs. man of science? Some even guess at Jacob and the MiB's true dispositions. I think this analysis is valid in the sense that the backgammon analogy has been with us the entire series.

Still, maybe a deeper debate is taking place and depending on what starting points a given character accepts what that character sees as good and evil will shift. I think the Season 5 finale hinted at one of many major binary conflicts presented on lost - cyclical versus linear conceptions of history.

His work established biosemiotics, and basically the ideas and themes about reality, ethics and reason that were a philosophical starting point for the program (Locke Hume, et al) were summed up in his theory of Unwelt. This theory concludes that all biological organisms are consisting of their own worlds--others see it other ways--but when we interact our unwelt combine. His work was used later by Heidegger, Merleau-Ponty, etc. Meanwhile the philosopher I'm speaking of, Jakob von Uexküll, is all but out of print.

I believe that in "Some Like It Hoth", we've seen attempts by both sides to recruit Miles, indicating he has an important role to play in the events to come. So how did each side approach him?

There are thought to be two opposing forces on the Island, Jacob and MIB. One is light, one is dark. One (arguably) represents free will, the other, fate. Once sees the good in humanity, the other, the evil. This ying and yang, if you will, has come to epitomize the LOST's themes, or at least the themes as we understand them so far. I posit that instead of two opposite forces existing on the Island, there are in fact THREE different entities, not necessarily in competition, but acting in mutual balance (until the whole loophole thing). These three forces are Jacob, MIB, and the Island itself, which early in the show had often been anthropomorphised. I would further claim that these three forces are a parallel to the Hindu Trimurti, the pantheon of the three highest gods: Vishnu, Shiva, and Brahma, respectively. Let's take a look at each of these parallels (starting with the most obvious one):

The not completely thought idea about the power of Belief

I’ve been toying with the idea of how important Faith or Belief is on the show, in actually practical terms on the Island. I started thinking about this after watching season 5 episode ‘316′. Belief comes up a number of times in the episode, most explicitly with Locke’s suicide note and Ben’s story about Doubting Thomas the Apostle. I then thought back to Ben’s description of the Island as a “Magic Box” and how whatever you wanted to come out of it would. Then I happened to watch the episode where Ben watches Alex get gunned down by Keamy, and the way he handled it always made sense, but in the sense that he felt his BELIEF that Keamy would not go through with killing her was enough. Then he proclaimed that Widmore had “broken the rules”. Then I thought about The Others not jumping through time in ‘Because You Left’.

I am re-watching season 4 (not sure why I started at 4) and I remember when Charlie comes to talk to Hugo. He states that he is dead, but he is also here. Perhaps this is evidence of ALT. Again I am not sure which outlook or spectrum you could pigeon hole me into, but just hear me out.

So in the past Hugo has need re-assurance from others that what he sees is real. When he sees Locke he asks a nurse, ex. So when someone else tells him that there is a man there and its Charlie. He kinda has a feeling hes real. This is the ALT part, what if Charlie was there, because up to that point Hugo's path would lead him to the island and then while he was arguing in his mind Hugo makes a decision that he WILL NOT go back and this forces Charlie to disappear (think back to the future photograph where people disappeared). Just a thought, let me know what yall think.

So, say 815 doesn't crash and creates an alt timeline. Also say for whatever reason, Desmond still winds up on the island. At the point in time that he had decided to off himself, but was saved by Locke pounding his fists on the hatch door, there will be no Locke pounding on that door. If Desmond does indeed kill himself, and the button doesn't get pushed nor the failsafe key get turned, then any alt universe ends. If that were the case, then the only universe that survives is the one where 815 crashes.

So we’ve heard all about course correction, that you can change your destiny in the short run but the universe will set things aright in the long run. Well, Jacob appears to be exempt from that. He’s actively altering destiny when he touches the Losties, he knows it, and he doesn’t seem concerned in the least. In fact, he seems quite confident and in his element when he intervenes.

Let’s do the rundown of how Jacob changed folks' destinies:

I'm a believer that Jacob's touch brought a dead John Locke back to life when he was pushed out of the window by bad-daddy Cooper. I also think this touch allows Jack and co. to survive the Jughead blast, but that idea is shared by a lot of people so it's nothing new.

Remember Charlie, who met Hurley in the mental hospital? He was dead and not dead (That was what he said). I think this is literally true. Because of two timelines. In the first timeline Oceanic 815 crashed and latter on Charlie died. But now after blowing the H-Bomb Charlie and everyone on Oceanic 815 lands safe and sound in LA.

I felt a need to address The Others' relationship to Smokey, which I admit has surprised me. Initially, for some reason, I always believed that The Others were either in control or cooperating with Smokey. I thought Juliet was either lying to Kate in S3, or simply didn't know about it. After all, since The Others are the island's defenders, it seemed to make sense that its secuirty system would be working with them. Then "The Shape Of Things To Come" came around, and I was more convinced than ever that Smokey is The Others' ultimate weapon.

Aaron is the union of the Sheppard family and the Widmore family.

Who was the next person? Widmore. And Widmore said in the same scene that "a war was coming" and that if Locke wasn't back on the island when that happened "the wrong side is going to win." Does all of this mean he is working for the Man in Black? It sure sounds like it.

I believe the whispers are the characters voices as they're transported thru time. To try and simplify it; The island is the constant base of operations, that travels thru time and the characters or the time jumpers, are the variables traveling thru that base of operations. For example as the jumpers are stationary in one time their remnants touch all the time periods, as the island itself also parlays all time periods.

It's also possible that in previous episodes the characters were in a consistant time flux without realizing it, and experiencing these time remnants as the lived on the island.

As for the island actually disappearing at the end of season four, it disappeared because the island was actually gone or destroyed at some point in time. Still working on that one.

Over the course of the show it has been hinted at and somewhat shown that people have prior knowledge of events before they happen. From Hawking's premonition of the red shoed man's death, to Ben's claim that for the first time he didn't know what was going to happen, it seems that some characters know the future while others don't. Many theories have tried to explain this, but the simplest has to be Faraday's journal.

Also has anyone noticed the huge scar thats on locks eye? Well in the very begining of season 2, when we meet locks girlfriend helen he does not have that scar. So where did it come from? Another thing that i noticed when jack first goes into the hatch looking for kate and lock, he walks past the concrete wall where the electromagnatism is coming from and there is alot of stuff that looks like items we saw in season 5 finally when they were drilling in the hole such as buckets and scaffolding! HMMM ... I think the first few seasons are alternate destiny's.

I had a Calculus teacher once who said that two words could easily explain Calculus: Things Change. Calculus is the basis of Physics and Daniel Faraday's physics of variables and constants is a big theme of this show. For that past few months there have been heated debates between "Whatever Happened Happened" and an alternate timeline, spurred by the decision of Faraday and Jack to drop a hydrogen bomb at the Swan station site, to negate the energy caused by Radzinsky drilling into a pocket of electromagnetic energy. But we already know that it is not a clear case of one versus the other. In fact Eloise Hawking already told us how the universe works. According to her, everyone follows a path, and where that paths ends will always be the same, but how you go about getting there is what can change. "Because it wouldn't matter. Had I warned him about the scaffolding tomorrow he'd be hit by a taxi. If I warned ! him about the taxi, he'd fall in the shower and break his neck. The universe, unfortunately, has a way of course correcting. That man was supposed to die. That was his path just as it's your path to go to the island. You don't do it because you choose to, Desmond. You do it because you're supposed to."

Assuming the atomic bomb successfully detonated, causing the losties to fly without incident from Sydney to LAX, couldn't the explosion itself have started a completely different history of the world from the 70's to the present (2004).

That is, could an atomic bomb going off in the Pacific Ocean in the 1970s have created, say, a confrontation between the US and the Soviet Union. Could such a war have altered history in a way in which there was no Persian Gulf War (no sayid the torturer?) Perhaps a young Christian Shepherd is a surgeon in that war and dies.

The main antagonist on the show is the same one we've been introduced to in the very first episode- The Mosnter. But unlike some, I don't believe that The Man in Black is another deceased person Smokey impersonates. I believe he became The Smoke Monster.

How exactly does that happen, you might ask?

Ok, let me just say that LOST to this date has constantly built things up for us as huge mysteries or giant puzzles, however when they reveal the answer they do it in a somewhat less dramatic manner than you might think for example, the theme of jacob ran through 5 series and yet when we finally found out who he is it was done very casually at the start of the season 5 finale. So we know the writers use clever plot devices to make us think were about to see the biggest twist when something much bigger is in play. Therefore, do you think that it could be possible that they are just luring us in with this alternate timeline theory that they seem to be pointing towards and perhaps maybe a few episodes down the line jack might wake up on the island possibly dreaming that he made it to LA X... Just something i thought i would put out there. cheers guys.

Have you ever heard the famous quote from Winston Churchill, "Those that fail to learn from history, are doomed to repeat it." Well, the Mayans made this into a kind of religion. They believed that all human events were cyclical. So if there was a famine this year that caused starvation, then after time time the wheel of time could turn and bring the famine again.

If everything happens for a reason I think Darlton are genius. I think the time loop that we see videos of from the Orchid and now with the 2 Lockes one dead and the other not happened as early as S1. In Solitary episode, Sayid tells Rousseau that Nadia was dead. Could this be Sayid in the future? In the episode where Jack, Kate, Boone and Locke are looking for Clare and Charlie it always struck me as funny when the Jack and Kate break off from Locke and Boone and we hear someone screaming in the back ground, Jack asks Kate did she hear that and she appears to not hear the screaming, then Jack charges up the hill saying he wasn't going to allow this to happen again. Is this a future Jack. Another one is in S3 Further Instructions Locke tells Eddy the FBI I guy in the woods and he is trying to clean up his mess that HE WAS A HUNTER.

I think that maybe a time loop thing is going on here.

This is a relatively quick theory that popped into my head after watching parts of the episode in season 5 where Juliet delivers Ethan back in 77. Okay, so the problem on the island is that mothers are unable to have a successful pregnancy post incident. We don't know for sure that Sun would have had a problem had she stayed, but we all know Aaron was born on the island. This made me think that Aaron was okay because the island needs Aaron for some reason. I'd like to think that Aaron is Jacob or will become a time traveler and become Jacob, but that's too far of a leap for this theory.

Little attention is paid to who specifically they are. The reason for this is that there is seemingly no answer which can be meaningfully drawn from the show. People point to 'aliens' or 'gods', which most people find generally unsatisying. Many argue that it's not important, that it is what these two rivals do that matters most. I disagree. Originally, I assumed that Jacob had never resided in The Cabin, and that it was a prison he had set up for MIB, but I no longer believe that to be the case. This is my attempt to sort out this mystery. I have two reasons for thinking Jacob did use The Cabin at some point. The first is the fact The chair in his chamber is strinkingly similar to the one in The Cabin, and the second is the piece of tapestry. How would The Nemesis have any accesses to it?

My theory is that Jacob and MIB have decided to play a game to decide the fate of humanity (MIB wants them dead, Jacob wants them to live). Similar to how Charlie avoided death a bunch of times in season 6, in the game you have multiple "lives" before you are dead for good. When someone dies on the island, they are reincarnated as a child who is either on the island, is destined to go to the island, was on the island in the past, or whose parents were from the island. That is why Walt was special- because he is a reincarnation of a dead island-dweller who was important (maybe someone who died in the purge?). All our losties, including little Charlie, Aaron, and Ji-Yeon are all reincarnations. Children can recall their reincarnations better than adults, so they are more special (hence Walt's powers, and Ben seeing his dead mother, and Locke's drawing of the smoke monster).

The similarities between them are striking: they arrived on the Island at approximately the same time. They each have ties to the three main 'power groups' that we've seen on the Island: Juliet was a member of the Others, the Dharma Initiative, and the Losties; Desmond was a Lostie, has ties to the Others by virtue of being ex-Island King Charles Widmore's son in law, and spent three years in a Dharma hatch doing the work Dharma left behind.

I was thinking about the time travel aspect of the Lost show and had a few observations. When the losties experienced the flashes, they were sent in the past. They moved forward and backward during the flashes, but it seemed like they never flashed beyond the original present time they started from. When Locke moved the wheel, he was sent about 3 years into the future. I am not sure, but wasn't Ben also sent into the future when he turned the wheel. Wasn't he positioned in the Middle East around the time Sayid's wife's funeral was taking place. Why is that?

Just a thought: I think Jacob didn't send Ilana to the Island---the MIB did.

When 'Jacob' meets with Ilana, he's dressed all in black. Clothing color is, of course, rather significant here. And what does Ilana do? She forces Sayid to return to the Island. We know Jacob seems to be all about free will, whereas the MIB is the agent of destiny/fate. Forcing Sayid back to the Island against his will doesn't seem like Jacob's style.

I know the loop theory has been around for a while, but after reading someone else's loop theory I started to think about what happens if the loop is broken.

I think the Incident is what starts the loop over again. Like Miles said detonating the bomb is what causes the incident and causes the loop to continue. Not detonating the bomb is what I think would end the loop. We see a parallel of this with Sayid shooting Ben and making him the evil man he becomes. Sayid continues to do what he’s always done both at the micro level, this particular situation, and the macro level, still a killer. Now if the bomb detonates, I think the losties die and get sent back to start the loop over. The cycle of reincarnation def comes into play here. Jack has to stay in the loop until he stops trying to fix things, but by trying to detonate the bomb he's still trying to fix things. You could make arguments that some of the other losties have changed, but maybe they all have to for the cycle to end.

I have to applaud Darlton for their story-telling abillities. The signs that Locke was headed towards a dark path were staring right in our faces, for so long. But we mostly ignored them, because we wanted to believe Locke had a destiny just as much as he did.

I believe the biggest hints are in Season 4's penultimate episode, "Cabin Fever". Back then, it was this episode that convinced us Locke was meant to lead and had a destiny, but when examining this episode after the "The Incident", it's the one that shows how that's not the case at all.

    How so?

Alright, after looking on Lostpedia for a little more info, I realize that this theory has been mentioned before, but the idea is new to me, so I’ll submit it to be torn apart by all of you…lol.
