In the Swan orientation video, Dr.Chang warned that attempting to use the computer to contact the outside world could lead to another incident. But we know that The Incident had nothing to do with communication. So why would Chang emphasize this supposed danger of communication? Simple. That's not Dr. Chang in the Swan video. That's MIB impersonating Chang. Think about it. MIB is the one who is dedicated to keeping the island hidden. And contacting the outside world exposes the location of the island. Hence Chang's emphasis on not contacting the outside world.

This will be quick.
I was out of work sick the other day and watched The Neverending Story (it was the only thing on, ok). Atreu has to go thru 2 tests to reach the Southern Oracle. The first test is passing by the 2 Sphinxes (with huge boobs) who will strike you dead if your heart is not true and you are unsure of yourself (like Smokie scanning Eko and Locke). The next test is looking at yourself in the mirror and the mirror will show you your true self (if you think you are brave but you are really a coward you will see that and run the other way, for example). If you can face your true self and move ahead, then you can speak with the Southern Oracle.

Something different so far. by M.O.S
What did we see so far? What have we understood? Well it is not really obvious, neither is it clear so far, or is it? Five seasons of back and forth and right back again. So many theories and speculation everywhere. Why? Because the creators keep us in the dark. They give too little while we want more! I have read a lot of theories, and based on these here’s my shot.

IF LOST is in fact rooted in parallel realities (all Fringe-like) and characters jumping to another reality receive a certain immunity from death, a neat theory that has been speculated here by other LOST lovers, then how does this relate to the loophole?
Well, perhaps Jacob is from another reality and is effectively immortal just as Ben and Widmore may be (remember their conversation in Widmore's bedroom).

Hello all. Perhaps it is no longer necessary to say that most of these ideas have certainly been mentioned before. (Maybe we can all stop being so polite now then, since most everyone’s theories are based on knowledge of everyone elses anyway..lol). By the way, this is kind of a long read, but a much easier one than my confusingly long one on free-will.
But in light of some recent theories and revelations, I wanted to reiterate a few ideas that have been mentioned, and attempt to tie them into some semblance of a theory:

So I was watching Namaste last night on ABC.com and noticed something that could be very important.
In the scene where Lapidus is giving his speech to the 316 survivors, there is a man in khaki pants, a blue shirt, and a leather jacket on that looks A LOT like Jacob. At 13 minutes and 50 seconds into the episode (on ABC site) it shows the man walk from the middle of the group to the outside. As Lapidus and Cesar are talking, it only shows him 2 more times, once at 14:46 and once at 14:51, but it doesn't show his whole body, just his back and the top of his head.
If it is Jacob, maybe everyone else cannot see him and he is always there. This has potential to be a big clue. Check it out and tell me what you think...

It occurred to me that there are 2 fundamentally different ways to look at the time loop of Season 5, and other loops as well.
There are a number of theories floating around that the end of Lost will take place in the past, where the loop is undone, or at a new and presumably better timeline is created.

This website is great to start off with. I have been on it since the spawning of it but have yet to post. I'd like to post something that has been on my mind since a bit of the Season 5 Finale.
It has been hinted on numerous occasions that the ending of LOST has been filmed. My theory is that we have already seen the ending of LOST. The scene I think it is? Well.. Here we go!

In advance: everything that follows makes perfect sense in my head but may make little to no sense to anyone else. Sorry. Okay? Begin speculation:
Jacob and his “nemesis” (who will be referred to as the Man in Black from now on) are from ancient times (no idea when or from where) and they come to the Island (no idea how or from where). Events transpire that lead to them being exposed to copious amounts of the exotic matter that makes the Island so special. This allows them to see all of time.

I am a diehard fan and have created a website that covers a theory of LOST being a game of Light vs Dark played by 2 opposing sides representing the parallels of the ancient Egyptian gods, Horus vs Seth. My theory also involves multiple universes/Iterations and many "Clues" and "Indications" that denote game pieces throughout the show, involving features of Light n Dark, Faith n Science and Fate and Free Will......here is a link.....

Id like to say this is not a spoiler... as it is still speculation on a comment made by DL, and is not the be all end all. I am from the uk and have recently bought the dvds. Because You Left, the season premiere, has a commentary from DL and CC and in it DL explicitly makes a joke that "Locke is a very very different person when he gets back to the island". Also, in the scene which Locke is told he has to die by Richard - which we later see from the other point of view, that Flocke gave these orders, DL also makes a comment to the effect of how important it is that Flocke is so explicit in his orders, and that the ramifications (the fact that he can take Lockes form) are very relevant to the final season. I think this is definately a clear hint that MIB has taken his form... and the endless theories of the fact that Flocke could be Locke from another timeline or time... is just making things overly complicated i! think.
please leave your thoughts, i think it would be nice to get an early clear up on this point so that we can look forward to the fact that MIB is now in control of the island, and our losties have to deal with that. At least we still have Terry O Quin. And Lockes memories are still intact, maybe there is a bit of Locke still left inside, which has a chance to fight back, who knows.

I believe that the Locke we saw in the Incident is actually Locke from the FUTURE. I also believe that we've only witnessed the end part of the loophole and haven't witnessed how the loophole first initiated.
(just bare with me here, all of this is just speculation. I really don't have anything to back this up. And I'm sure it may violate some facts that we've learned.)

First and foremost I love reading these theories! Each and every one of them is fantastic. Everyone here has a creative mind. So let me get on with my theory and if this has been said before I apologize.
Emily gave birth to John, he was not the Jesus child that his she eventually tried to tell him. My theory is this John Lockes father is Charles Whidmore.
Charles Whidmore was banished from the island for having a child with an off islander. We assume this is Penny. What if it was John Locke?
When the Losties were timeskipping and ending up in 1954 he was what... in his 20's? He probably had an off island trip met Emily and had a child. Little did he realize that it would be John Locke.

These two timelines are mixed from the begining of Lost. Some times both exist inside the heads of the losties as dreams and some as visions, strainge events on and off the island.

This theory is building upon "The Knife Theory", which was good stuff. I find it extremely difficult to stick to one topic when writing these theories, so I will try my best...
First of all I want to point out that I believe Richard and Jacob to be "the bad guys". LOST is a show where nothing is usually what it seems, and most characters are usually not who they appear to be initially. For example, we were lead to believe that Jack was going to get everyone saved, when after all was said and done, he ended up killing everyone aside from those who got off of the island and the Sawyer/Faraday crew. We were lead to believe that Sawyer was a bad guy the first few seasons, only to see him turn out to be one of LOST's biggest heroes. Ben Linus and Juliet both come across quite evil in season 3 but end up helping the survivors later on (Ben is the only character on LOST where I have no idea still if he's good or bad).

"I know what you are boy" - Widmore to Ben
Widmore did NOT say "I know WHO you are". This always intrigued me.
Lets operate on the assumption that death is accompanied by the soul separating from the physical body. In some cases the souls become ghosts (the kind Miles talks to) and in other cases they vanish to another plane and in some cases they fill a baby (reincarnation). That happens normally everywhere in the world except on the Island where the soul becomes separate from bodies and get trapped inside the Island "snowglobe" i.e. the energy field that surrounds the Island and the surrounding ocean. Basically the energy field that encloses what moves when the donkey wheel "jiggles" the exotic matter. This is the field Faraday remarked "The Zodiac must have been inside the field" and the field that ensured the Island and small surrounding Islands move as a group together in time/space...

This has been a mystery since the Season One finale, Exodus. Thanks to new information presented in The Incident, I think that a legitimate stab can be taken at this event that confused many. After all, Locke's first encounter with the monster in Walkabout was described as 'beautiful', and it didn't attack him at all. So why the sudden change in attitude?

In season 1, Emily Locke told John Locke that he was immaculately conceived. It stood out to every view what we had been assuming for the entire first part of the season: that John Locke was special. This makes him more special. Now while it's hard to take anything at face value in Lost, and in addition her telling him that he actually DID have a father, Anthony Cooper, who Locke met later. A lot goes against the immaculately conceived thing. But it always felt a little fishy to me. Anthony Cooper never seemed right.

I was re-watching some older episodes from season 4 and 5 and came across an interesting coincidence. When Richard visits John Locke as a child back in the 40's or 50's, He brings several items with him that he claimed used to belong to John. The knife that John selects as the item that he used to own, sets Richard into a rage, and he storms off upset. In the season 5 finale the incident, I noticed that the same knife young Locke recognized as his own, is the knife Ben uses to slay Jacob. Coincidence, I think not. The show is to well written for this to be just a coincidence.
I believe Richard was upset, because he knew that knife would eventually kill Jacob (his Boy). He, along with everyone else, is trying to change the future. Only certain people can alter the future maybe.

I have no idea if anyone has mentioned anything on this already, but I was just re-watching season 1 and noticed something about the comic book Walt is reading in the Pilot episode part 2. (Yes, Hurley's spanish comic book). Aside from the polar bear in it which I think distracted us all, Walt flips open to a page for just a second where 3 characters are speaking to each other (in spanish, obviously). I paused it at this point. 2 of the guys look like super-hero types. The third guy looks creepy and his back is to us, but he is speaking. And he's standing next to what LOOKS like a contraption which is very very similar to our very own donkey wheel which moves the island.

I don't know about you guys, but when I watched that first encounter between Ben and Widmore back in season 4(I think), when they talked about changing rules and not being able/allowed to kill each other, I had a sudden revelation and thought 'this must be it!' - two main players in the context of the island..we don't know that much about either one..leading a quite deep conversation...- I was convinced that this was what it was all about...something between them two...the point being that now, one season later, I'm having the same feeling about Jacob and that other guy. Now, I'm not saying that this isn't it, that these two are not the most important players on the island...I'm just saying they are...but only for now. 100 episodes and it's AMAZING how the last one just changed the entire picture..through two characters and maximum 20 lines. So what I'm saying is that when it comes to LOST, one should always expe! ct the unexpected and double-analyze what is obvious. From the same final episode, what is almost too obvious is that Locke is talking the same way the dude from the beginning is..so it's safe to say it's obvious that he is actually the MIB. But what is also obvious, yet not that obvious is this: the ep. starts, Jacob and MIB are introduced...they know each other...for a long time...they have a chat...10feet away from the STATUE. 40 minutes later...Locke, in search for his target, Jacob, is staring at the right foot of it ... and makes no connection-he wants to know where J. is not what the foot stands for. Another thing that is obvious, but not that obvious is that so far...of all the physical manifestations of MIB/Smokey/?/.. the only one of whom we have actually seen a corpse is John. I mean...have we seen Yemi's corpse after Ecko got killed? or Christian's body? or Alex's body after Ben's "judgment" ? I think it's rather obvious that revealing Locke's corpse was a premi! ere and at the same time an obvious hint to something that wil! l later pull an "A-HA So that's why...!" out of all of us. So...what about it?

In the Season 5 Finale "The Incident", we learn from Bram and Ilana that Frank could be a 'candidate'. A candidate for what, we never learn. But a few clues from Season 5 lead me to believe that what Frank is a candidate for is being Jacob's successor.
The evidence begins in Season 3, before Frank even arrives on the show. The Others are building a runway. Until the episode Namaste, we have no idea what the runway is for, and it seems that they don't either. But in that episode, Frank uses it to land 316 on the Hydra Island, saving many lives in the process (possibly including Sun and Ben's).

To start with, I'm a firm believer that MIB has taken the form of every apparition we've seen on the island (Yemi, Christian, New Locke, Alex, Walt, etc), and is also the smoke monster. That this one entity has been manipulating time and space through the Losties in order to kill Jacob, and that we as viewers were jumpy to assume that we had ANY contact with Jacob at all, prior to "The Incident".

I don't know if anyone has made this connection, but I've never heard it mentioned before.
I think there is sufficient evidence to suggest that the Dharma Initiative has moved the island before.
We know that the polar bears were brought to the island by Dharma, but we never learned why. The only clue we were given were the bear cages (now used to imprison people like Sawyer and Kate), that trained the bears to push a big button (and receive a fish biscuit).

The MIB believes that humanity always destroys itself. Previous 'group' interactions have supported this theory---the Hostiles vs the US Army, Dharma vs the Hostiles, the breakup of Danielle's group, etc. Jacob believes the opposite---that different 'tribes' of people can come together peacefully on the Island. I think the Losties' arrival on the Island symbolized Jacob's 'victory' over the MIB, and that's why the time travel shenanigans began.

I'm coming more and more to think that Flocke, may actually be Locke. I just keep wondering about a few things, such as why wouldn't the real Locke be back for season 6, and if they did, what the point of 2 Lockes would be.
The simple answer is obviously that Flocke is just an impersonation by Smokey or MIB or what have you. But I'm nearly convinced that there must be more to it.

Ok. So, I've come up with a solution to how WHH can work:
Maybe the island not only travels in time, but time travels on the island.
Let me say this first. The island is the only way in the world to time travel. Everywhere else in the world is the present. So, say that if Horace would have somehow gotten off the island in 1977, he would have walked into the world of 2007. So it is only the island that can change times.

I am basing my theory on the fact that when both Ben and John moved the Island with the FDW, they appeared in Tunisia in the "future". Yes, it has been shown that the Island has the ability to skip around in time, but perhaps naturally or by human influence, this can be controlled.
If the Island, relative to the rest of the world, is in the "past", that would explain why when John and Ben moved the wheel they appeared in Tunisia in the future - they didn't necessarily time travel, they just teleported off the island back to Tunisia which was present time outside the Island.

OK so I posted this as a sorta "quasi-theory" in another comments section, to answer someone's rather snide questioning of how could it possibly be another version of "real Locke" in the finale, and that we just are led to believe it is "Fake"Locke.
First a couple of things to set this up:
1 In the past we were led to believe that Jacob resides in the Cabin, but now after the revelation in The Incident we now know that "Someone else has been using it" and that "He hasn't been here for a while" So with that we can all agree that MIB is and has been using the cabin, and or was trapped in there.

Forgive me for the length here, but even a simplified discussion of free will vs. fate is still a lengthy task.
In reading a number of theories on here on the free will vs. fate debate, I see that some of you are much bigger free will junkies than I will ever be. Perhaps then, I offer this more simplistic view because my coursework was only loosely related to this subject, but perhaps in this situation a little simplicity might be best.

Omg. I think I figured out why there are two John Lockes. I can't believe that I didn't think of it before. I'm sure it has been mentioned, but I haven't heard it. So, if it has been mentioned, sorry.
So, according to Ben, no one has met Jacob. He is some magnificent man that everyone answers to but no one has met. He has been there a long time, and whether he is a god or a time traveler, he knows the future.
We know that Jacob met some of the losties, some when they were children, some when they were adults.

Soooo the characters have been brought and “observed” by the others in accordance with Jacob’s wishes, which I’m starting to think is to find those who are generally good people and will make the right decisions. It’s a test of one’s self.
This, I believe, is to counter Mr. X, whom I think is the facilitator of the corruption, fighting, and destroying he speaks of that the Island has seen of humans previously. He tempts them, tries to manipulate them, into doing the wrong thing, therefore adding to his own statement “it always ends the same.” (probably because of whatever grudge he holds against Jacob).

I'll try to keep this simple
First, I'll start with the premise that the island is a sentient entity. Due to it's massive and unique energies it is aware of it's surroundings, much like your brain is with it's complex system of chemical and electrical signals. These energies allow the island the ability to manipulate small amounts of time and to communicate in a limited manner telepathically.
Using it's telepathic influence it draws to it an ancient race of people who cultivate the island, worship it even, and become it's protectors.

I don't know if this counts as a theory per se, but I have a few minor ideas...
I think jacob is doing things that are one step ahead of Flocke. As an audience, we think Flocke has the upper hand by creating the time loop, and having Ben kill Jacob. What if jacob anticipated this happening, and was one step ahead of Flocke? What if this whole time, he has been inhabiting Christian, who's body was on Flight 815. Jacob Inhabbited Christian's body,as M.I.B did with Locke, unbeknownst to the audience that this is whats going on, we think Christian is back from the dead, when really it's jacob , who is in Christian's body, like M.I.B. with Locke. Note the Black & White shoes.

One of the questions being pondered during the long wait for the final season of Lost, is did Sayid survive the gunshot wound he suffered in the season five finale. I am in agreement with past theories posted on this site that claim the island cannot allow people who have traveled in time to die if their deaths would result in a paradox. If we accept this as true, then I believe Sayid cannot die of the gunshot wound for the following reasons.

I am almost finished with season 4 in my rewatch and I have noticed sooo much more than I did the first time around. Something that confuses me is when Desmond starts mind jumping on the freighter. What I gathered from this is that his consciousness got stuck in the past when he was in the army, and then jumped to the future where he does not recognize anything. That is why he told Penny he'd call her in 8 years. I think this was a big clue to season 6. That was the first time we had seen anything happen from the past to the future. All the other time or mind traveling episodes goes from the future to the past. This theory is only compatible with the people on the island.

Daniel Faraday changed things. He prevented the purge. He did this in "The Other Woman" when he and Charlotte went to the Tempest station and he rendered the poison gas inert. They layed the ground rules for island time shifting early on in the fifth season when the Zodiac raft time shifted along with the Losties. Apparently if you move or change an object just prior to the time shift it shifts along with you. When Daniel altered the poison gas, the gas time shift along with Daniel and company back to the 70s, so when Ben tries to use it in the 80s during the purge, it no longer works. That was Daniel's intention all along, to prevent the purge.

I had to wait until I came up with a theory that actually made sense about the monster before posting...So here it is:
When Locke first meets the smoke monster in season one and describes to Jack that he has seen 'the eye of this island', what could he mean?
When Eko sees the monster for the first time, we see images of his memories flash before his eyes in the black cloud.
When Ben goes to get judged by the monster, we see Ben's memories of Alex flash before him.

Hello,
I am the french guy who ve posted the big bang theory before!!
Im back to share with you who Jacob is, He is Aaron, he is not a god or an angel, just a man from a distant future who become timeless like Richard.
Three points to develop:
- They look like the same
- The importance of Aaron during 5 seasons
- A little theory which explain how Aaron became Jacob:

Christian Shephard was has been used by MIB since his corpse landed on the island via 815. I believe that MIB (who is also the smoke monster) scanned Jack - either with Jack knowing or not - There is so much more to that scene from the pilot where Jack conveniently goes missing during the chase from the monster on the way to the cockpit! After scanning Jack of his memories, very much the same way of Eko, he was able to realise that he could use Christian to lure Jack out into the jungle. And if we remember correctly he tried to kill Jack by running him off a cliff! That is going to be no one else than MIB! I dont know why he tried to kill Jack, but its evident that Jacob and MIB´s intelligence transcend space and time, and maybe in the future Jack is key in bringing about MIB´s demise and he tried to stop that early.

Not sure if this has already been said but here goes. My theory relates to the season four episode where Ben breaks into Widmore's flat and tells him that he is going to kill Pennny. When Ben enter's and Charles wakes up he ask's Ben if he is going to kill him, which Ben replies "you know I can't do that". Now we know that Ben is the leader at this moment and Widmore was the leader before him, what if there is some kind of code along the lines of "No person may harm a leader, either past or present and take his or her place". This could be why Charles was exiled from the Island, it was the only way Ben could take command of the Others. What if Jacob was the leader of some Pre-Other group and the MIB was his number two who wanted to take command, possibly to put a stop to the endless cycle of people comming to the Island and it always ending the same way ect. ect. ENTER FAKE LOCKE AND THE LOOPHOLE.
Thanks for reading.

I think the plotline for season 6 will go something like this - at least the beginning. I was watching "Flashes Before Your Eyes" and I was thinking about what happened to Desmond. There are many other theories like this one, I'm sure, but I thought I might post a different, hopefully easier way of explaining it.

A couple of things strike me while thinking about the show moving forward:
Before outlining these things, let me say that I 100% believe that the mystery man on the beach with Jacob is the black smoke monster (possibly before some sort of conflict/transformation) and that the "monster" has been manipulating everyone via dead persons on the island (and possibly anyone off island) from the beginning. This includes all versions of Christian on the island, alt John Locke, Yemi, Alex, and any others I've forgotten. He's been setting us up throughout the whole show, now we see the end game approach...

As always, we have to have some deaths this season, but what's great about Season 6, is it's the one true season where literally anything could happen.
Jack & Kate weren't going to die up until now. Neither was Locke and it was highly unlikely that other characters like Hurley, Sawyer, or Ben would until the final season either.
But now we have the element of destiny, and we have to start wondering who is "destined" to die for the greater good, as Charlie did, only this time for all the marbles.

I like the idea about Widmore working for Mr. X and I started to think that way too until I remembered Widmore's conversation with Locke after he arrived in Tunisia. He could have been lying but he said that he sent the mercenaries there to remove Ben from the island and power so Locke could have his time to lead. And that if Locke wasn't on the island the wrong side would win. Now Widmore knew that sending the mercenaries would push Ben to try and move the island as a last result but did he know that by doing so he would succeed starting this time jumping and leading to them meeting in the 50's, then some more jumping and Locke would finally turn the wheel and get off the island. But then he would die and return only to be taken over by Mr. X?

This is a very brief theory that takes another look at the character John Locke. I have written two other theories in the recent past also about Locke, and I recommend that you read those two first. "Musings on John Locke" and "Further Muings on John Locke."
In my hiatus rewatch, I am now on the third disk of Season 2. The tail section survivors have been reunited with the middle section and Locke and Mr. Eko have met.
In the episode "What Kate Did", there are two conversations between the aforementioned that I would like to reexamine now that Jacob and MIB have been introduced.

What if when a LOST character dies, they go to an alternate world and reunite with other dead losties, like Charlie(not saying Charlie is in S6).

None of our Losties were meant to be on the flight originally.
The future was changed, someone has been interfering in and changing the past. I think the Others are not keepers of course correction but manipulators of time. They bring people to the island for Jacob. Jacob is all that is left of Dharma and he is still trying to change the ultimate end as predicted by Valenzetti. The end which Dharma ironically caused. He is playing with the variables. Faraday is on the other team which is countermanding Jacob. His job is to discover what Dharma did, study EM, time travel, Constants and Variables. One we have followed all of Faraday’s story we will then be able to rewatch Lost and figure it all out. One we know about Variables it will no doubt be revealed that Jacob was just A Dharma scientist (or Aaron perhaps). There are stories overlapping in Lost as we have been watching a cleverly edited story to look like one continuous time line.

This is really just a response to a theory by Naldo called "John Locke has never been John Locke"
It seems that a lot of people in the comments suggested that it would make no sense for John Locke to have always been MIB because it would be a waste of character development. I totally disagree. I have also thought that, since birth, John Locke has been MIB. But who is to say that MIB is some God-like character? I'll admit I don't know many specifics about reincarnation, and I may not even want to go there, but I do believe if that is the case, MIB/Locke would not completely realize what he was or what he is doing until way later in life, as in one of the hundreds of events that happened to him on the island. If this were the case, and MIB/Locke isn't some God-like being, then it totally makes sense for his charter to still have revelation/development.

So, you think Horace built the cabin? I doubt that.
First of all it was a dream...a looping dream...a dream, nothing else. Locke also had a dream about his mother standing on the island pointing at the crashing Nigerian plane ...so what? She was on the island at the exact same time when plane crashed, pointing at it? I saw Locke there but not Emily..

I have noticed there is a lot to do with folks putting on shoes. Especially Locke, and Christian. If you notice, Christian arrives with white shoes, he must have had his shoes changed at some point before I believe Jack changed his shoes if my memory serves me correctly.
After his father's death, Jack Shephard felt that the corpse did not need new shoes, and instead gave his father an old pair of white tennis shoes that he had. Jack later attributed this to the fact that he didn't think his father was worth a new pair of shoes. Christian wore these shoes while in his coffin aboard Oceanic Flight 815.

I'm currently watching Season 1 again, and have found MANY eerie signs that point to this theory: JOHN LOCKE HAS ALWAYS BEEN THE MAN IN BLACK. The first time we see Locke alone (either the 1st or second episode), he's sitting with his back to the ocean, and a dark ominous cloud is coming inland.
Lock also explains backgammon to Walt, and states that it's the oldest game in the world. One side light, and one side dark.

I believe that Jacob is from one reality (be it alternate timeline or parallel universe) and MIB from another. The island is somehow between the two worlds and there will be a war that decides which world will win.
Jacob is in the world that we have witnessed in Season 1 through 5 and MIB is in the one we will see in much of Season 6.
Jacob keeps bringing people to the island to the dismay of MIB. As MIB stated,” they come they fight and they destroy." (Looks like he is right about that, people do keep “blowing things up”, even the Black Rock had dynamite.)

This theory was first submitted on 5th July 2007.
Let's go back to shortly after the turn of the Twentieth century, the days of Einstein and other early theoretical physicists. This was the dawn of the age of quantum mechanics, which provided new understanding and insight into physics at the sub-atomic level. New mathematics described the behavior of the tiny particles that make up all of matter in the universe. The math was clearly described in terms of numbers, symbols, formulas... however the application to nature as we know it was strange, weird, bizarre.
It was very difficult to wrap the human brain around many of the concepts of quantum mechanics, and the math alone was inadequate to explain the problems. Thus, physicists and mathematicians turned to "Gedanken Experiments," German for Thought Experiments. Applying the known concepts of quantum mechanics to situations in the "real world" allowed a conversation to take place in a way most anybody could (sort of) understand.
Before I lose you, here is an example. In the mathematics of quantum physics, time travel is THEORETICALLY possible. One of the most famous Gedanken Experiments is the Grandfather Paradox. If you could travel back in time, could you kill your grandfather? Logic tells you that no, you could not, for if you did, you would not exist. (Pause here and consider why Locke insists that "he can't" kill his father, he needs somebody else to do it.) The beautiful thing about Gedanken Experiments is that they are both scientific and philosophical, perfect fodder for a creative writer. In the case of the Grandfather Paradox, while they logic is clear, the actual experience of it is a mystery. Imagine actually standing there in the past, holding a loaded gun to the head of your grandfather... what would actually prevent you? "Something" would, some unknown mechanism of physics... and that is where the writers of "Lost" imagine for us.
"Lost" is a grand Gedanken Experiment, a test of science and philosophy. It asks the question, What if time travel were not only possible, but real, with technology developed in a manner as realistic and consistent with known theoretical physics as possible? And to make it even more dramatic, What if you could travel back in time, AND NOT KNOW IT? The passengers of Flight 815 have done exactly that, and the writers have made the audience go along with them, sharing the same sense of confusion and mystery.
Let's talk about what we know about time travel today. We are not talking about cheesy movies of the past, where one can travel back to the age of dinosaurs or the middle ages. In fact, in the "real" science of time travel, a few things are known by the constraints of physics and quantum mechanics.
There is a conceptual model of a real time machine, and it works something like this:
A time machine must have two parts, essentially two portals, connected by a wormhole (or black hole or whatever you want to call it). Door #1 is built alongside Door #2. Door #1 is allowed to continue along the "present"
timeline, while Door #2 is encapsulated in a bubble within space-time, thus separated from the present timeline. This would require a great amount of energy and technology obviously unknown today... but thanks to the writers of "Lost," it has been solved by Dharma Industries. The amount of separation would be only slight to begin with... say, 108 minutes. Since Door #1 exists in the present timeline, it can safely be located anywhere (Dharma headquarters?). Door #2, now operating in a different place in space-time, in the past, must be safely located in a remote location, for any type of interaction with it from the outside could be catastrophic.
There is a very important concept in time travel here, which is that you can NEVER travel back further in time than the creation of your time machine; Hence the impossibility of visiting the dinosaurs, etc. Now, if the two doors of your time machine were separated by only 108 minutes at the initial "event", but then allowed to just sit there, then both timelines would progress at the same pace, forever separated by only 108 minutes. Traveling to the past, but only by 108 minutes, would not be very interesting. Much more exciting would be to keep Door #2 back at the original time of its inception, while Door #1 continues to move forward in time. You could do this by continually "resetting" the clock on Door #2. Over time, the separation between the two doors would grow and grow, from minutes, to hours, to days, to years.
If you actually had the technology to achieve time travel in this manner, there are MANY profound questions you would have to test and answer in order to be confident that you could safely operate the time machine without catastrophically altering the future. The Grandfather Paradox is the most obvious, but actually only one of many questions.
ANSWER #1: What is the Dharma Initiative? It is the building and testing of a time machine, as described above. Door #1 is at the Dharma Headquarters, Door #2 is on the Island in the remote South Pacific.
The question isn't, Where is the Island? The question is, When is the Island? The answer to that depends on how long ago, in the present timeline, the time machine was created... approximately 14 years ago, I believe.
ANSWER #2: Why must the button be pushed every 108 minutes? This "resets"
the clock of Door #2 of the time machine, essentially holding it at the time of its inception in the relative past. If allowed to pass 108 minutes on the clock, then the time machine will lose the ability to reset itself. Why, then, must it be pressed by a person, and not just programmed to reset itself? This is because the controllers at Door #1 do not have control over Door #2 in the past, and should disaster strike, and nobody is left alive in the past at Door #2, it should be allowed to pass 108 minutes and no longer reset. ANSWER #3: What happened when the clock was allowed to pass 108 minutes? Door #2 of the time machine lost the ability to reset, and will now continue to progress along a timeline into the future, locked at approximately 14 years separation from Door #1.
What are some of the other critical questions, like the Grandfather Paradox, that must be answered when considering time travel? Here is a great one:
What if a childless woman travels back in time and conceives a child? ANSWER
#4: A childless woman cannot travel to the past and conceive a child, because if she did, she would not have been a childless woman. In "Lost", both mother and child die before the birth, thus preserving the timeline and laws of nature. Perhaps the Others do not fully understand this, and brought in fertility doctor Juliet to see if they can overcome this obstacle.
Consider another:
What if a child travels back to a time before he or she was born? Perhaps nothing... but what if the child dies in the past, before being born? Again, impossible. ANSWER #5: The Others abduct children on the Island to protect them at all costs, for they cannot allow the catastrophic violation of the laws of nature of a child dying before being conceived.
And yet another:
If you travel to the past, will you be the "you" of the present timeline when you arrive, or the younger "you" of the past, or some combination of the two? I do not know, but I believe this offers insight into why John Locke can walk on the Island despite being paralyzed. ANSWER #6: Locke can walk not because the Island has powers to cure, but because he has traveled back to a time BEFORE he was ever paralyzed. He is somehow a blend of the Locke of the present and the Locke of the past.
Who is Ben? I believe he is the creator of the time machine. The Others are his associates living in the time-space bubble around the Island and Door #2 of the time machine in the "past." They are managing it and testing the effects of time travel, and strictly controlling who exits this bubble into the outside world.
How does one arrive at the Island? There are two methods of traveling to the site (and time) of the Island. First is the controlled method via Door #1 at Dharma Headquarters. It is not via plane, submarine, or any other traditional method of transportation.
The other method is in the accidental collision with the time-space bubble that surrounds the Island, as happened with Oceanic Flight 815, the Portuguese woman's helicopter, etc. Despite the many theories that abound in online forums, the Others did not know that Flight 815 was coming or going to crash at the Island. It was a chance encounter. It was a disaster that created a paradox... what happens to a plane that crashes in the present, while entering the past? This leads to the question of whether the passengers are alive or dead, answered by talking about a cat.
Schrodinger's cat, to be specific. Again, quantum mechanics can be very strange. One of the strangest behaviors in particle physics is known as Superposition, which is the ability of a particle to occupy two different states simultaneously (like up and down, left and right, here and there, etc.). In the world we know, you cannot be both here and there, but in particle physics, a world of probability, chance, and duality, you can. How can one imagine this? Another great Gedanken Experiment was conceived, as follows:
Place a cat in a sealed, steel box, along with a bottle of poison. In addition, a radioactive element is placed within the steel box. The decay of this radioactive element triggers a hammer, which breaks the bottle, releasing the poison and killing the cat. For the observer, outside of the box, you do not know when this radioactive decay happens. Because of the laws of Superposition, the radioactive element can occupy both states simultaneously, for the briefest moment. For that blink in time, the bottle is both broken and intact... the cat is both dead and alive, at the same time. This is a puzzle of science, but more important perhaps is the philosophical question of what does it mean to be both dead and alive?
ANSWER #7: The passengers of Oceanic Flight 815 are dead at the bottom of the ocean. AND they are ALIVE on the Island. They are both dead and alive. I told you that you would love this one. Since they are alive in the "past" of the Island's timeline, can they return to the present in which they are dead? I guess that is the ultimate question that we will have to watch the show to find out.
A suggestion of an answer is found in Locke's/Sawyer's father. We were led to believe that he died in a car accident, and finds himself here on the Island. Of course he would think he's in hell! We believe that somehow Locke "willed" him here, but that was actually never said on the show. In fact, Ben said to Locke, "you brought him here." Perhaps what he means is this:
ANSWER #8: Locke's father did not die in the accident. I believe that we will find soon that Locke is going to leave the Island. The question that nobody asked Locke's father was when did the accident happen? See, Locke is going to return to the "present" timeline, and is going to pursue his father. He is going to find him, perhaps he is even going to cause his accident. He is going to drug and kidnap him, unable or unwilling to kill him by himself. He is somehow going to get him to Door #1 of the time machine and send him to the Island, where he already knows that Sawyer will kill him. Locke is going to "bring him here" to the Island... he just hasn't done it yet. When he is on the "outside" in the present, why is he going to do this? Because he has to, because it is destiny... for on the Island, it has already happened. You know Locke loves destiny.
I could go on and on. Why is there a zoo with polar bears? ANSWER #9: The animals are on the Island for testing the effects of the various paradoxes associated with time travel. Perhaps another reason is that by keeping and preserving endangered animals, like polar bears, within this bubble in the past, there is a resource for their recovery should they become extinct in the future. Consider it a Noah's Ark.
How do the Others know so much about the passengers of Flight 815? ANSWER
#10: The Others have had perhaps years, with Dharma Industries in the present timeline at Door #1, to research each of the individuals, and transmit this information to the Island. To the audience and the survivors of 815, it seemed like the Others instantly knew about them. However, it likely required years of research to compile the files.
There are still mysteries that remain, and stories that we do not know how they will play out. With this explanation, though, the behavior of the Others is understood. They must protect the timeline AT ALL COSTS. That makes them seem evil to the survivors of 815, but in reality their intentions are to prevent catastrophe.
There are many other stories I haven't touched, but they are all consistent with this basic theory. This includes Desmond's apparent "time loop" he is experiencing, and many others.
So there it is. Or, I'm out of my mind. Time will tell.

But they do know of him. Or at least, some of them do.
I believe Bram and Ilana represent a different faction of The Others, like Ben's off island people. It's no coincidence that Bram repeated Ben's "We're The Good Guys" claim.

This is the tenth theory in my ongoing commentary on what I believe we have seen on Lost. At this point in my narrative, my thoughts and ideas have come to a point where they now build off of one another so distinctly that out of context, the ideas seem a bit random. I say this because I just don't think that without having read my previous nine theories, this one or any other after may make as much sense (if any sense) as they would if read in order. For those of you who have not read my previous nine theories, I half heartedly advise you to not go any further in reading this theory. If you find yourself compelled to read my ideas, then begin with "Reconsidering the Events of Season 3 Parts 1-3", followed by "Further Evidence of Desmond's Change", "My Stance on the Powers That Be", "Further Evidence on Random Vs. Purpose", "Hurley and the Many Indicators of Random", "Musings on John Locke" and finally "Fur! ther Musings on John Locke". After having read those theories, you will read this tenth theory with an entirely different perspective than you would without the previous context.

I just wanted to add to the many parallels between LOST and Stephen King, in particular his Dark Tower series, which I've been thinking is one of the main influences of the show, ever since I started watching. Here's one more.
Randall Flagg is King's "Uber villain," and was the main antagonist in The Stand, which Darlton have said is a big inspiration to the show (The Stand, as well as many of King's other works, are incorporated into the Dark Tower universe). The first book of the DT, speaks of Flagg as "The Man In Black," which I found ironic. Later on in the series, we find that he can take others' shapes. Even moreso, there's a passage in which Flagg recalls "waking up" in different realities, as different people, and it usually takes him some time to remember himself. Needless to say, he's also a few thousand years old, and can "jump" through realities.
Flagg usually wears people down and manipulates them into doing things he wants to be done.
With all that we've seen of the MIB + Locke business, as well as other apparitions, it reminded me too much of "Flagg," one of a number of names he uses, another of which being Faraday =)

Towards the end of summer I was getting bummed out over lack of reading material. I wanted to read something really entertaining but well written enough to learn from, considering I plan to be an author. Also being a LOST fan, I remembered in either an interview or a podcast Damon and Carlton holding up Stephen King's book The Stand and claiming it is basically a "bible" for the show, they keep it on the set and while they're writing the episodes. If you read the book, LOST has a lot of similarities to the novel.

Okay, this is something that may have been brought up a while back but I thought I’d revisit it from a different perspective, because I know it was before the WHH vs ALT battles.
I’m primarily going to reference season two – ‘Live Together, Die Alone’, where Desmond meets Penny at the stadium before he goes on the boat race, and ‘The Constant’. This isn’t long, 2 parts question and one part theory.
Okay, so the idea of WHH is just that. No matter what time travel elements or alternate universe you want to add into it, the events from a chronological perspective always play out the same. Although I should point out that I disagree with the notion of a ‘course corrector’ and the fact that if someone is ‘supposed’ to die and gets saved that the evil universe will use all of it’s forces to kill that person in a way he wasn’t originally ‘supposed’ to die. For one I think that however that person ultimately dies is forever what happened – happened. Such as Charlie drowning, whatever Desmond ultimately did to delay his death until then was what went down. Now you can reference his ‘visions’ and how he cheated them, but they were just visions until he decided to do something about them.

I have read many theories regarding the Loop Hole that MIB found and it seems that so many people try too hard to explain it. Remember, the show's creators want this to be accessible to everyone so they have to explain events and reasons in a way that can be understood by most people. That means what exactly the loop hole is or why it is important probably isn't terribly complicated.
My theory, and it isn't so much a theory but an observation of what happened, is that the Loop Hole was simply MiB/Flocke telling Richard to tell Locke that Locke had to die to save the Island.
This is the only instance of MiB using a dead body of a person to manipulate that same person when they were alive.

I’m looking at a combination of theories in the hopes of coming up with something new. If it’s been said before then my apologies. Credit where credits due and all that. Just hoping I might put a different slant on things. The main new things I’m mentioning are in the bit titled LOOP HOLES in case you want to skip to the end to read.
ALT NOT AS A RESULT OF THE INCIDENT
I’m thinking of all the scenes in Lost as parts of many versions of a similar story running thorough Lost which has been cleverly edited to look like one story which set in a linear time line. Like when Des saved Charlie time after time, I think these were separate timelines made to look like they happened in one time line. Pieces of those many stories are different iterations of time line and we’ve not seen the whole picture, we’ve not seen how all the differences progress in time. For example I think that hidden in the story we’ve seen so far there was one iteration of the time line where Locke did kill the undercover cop in the commune. I believe therefore that there are alternative time lines in Lost but not as a result of the incident.

It's pretty evident that MIB is able to inhabit unburied dead bodies to mislead the current crop of Jacob invitees to his side of the backgammon board and effect the general outcome of island life. It is also evident that 1977 Dharma is aware that there is a problem, hence Amy's seemingly overplayed concern with the burial of the two others that killed Paul.
So what prior to 1977 taught the Dharma folk? Maybe we'll never know, but I theorize that MIB's hand is in the events of 1977. And by looking at their actions the people who seem to have the largest role in determining outcomes are Horace and Radzinsky, don't be too surprised if we find that one of these two died before we knew them. My personal bet is on Horace, as he built the cabin that eventually becomes MIB's prison, which seems too much a coincidence to me.
One other thought , is it possible that the truce onluy exists to limit the amount of bodies likely to be left laying around?
Look forward to your comments , Control

While rewatching "Dead Is Dead" yesterday, I was struck by how nice Widmore appeared to act towards young Ben. It then uccoured to me after Ben's comment that "I found sometimes that friends could be considerably more dangerous than enemies" that Widmore might have been something of a mentor to him at first, and even a father figure, before they became enemies.
We've all been wondering about Ben and The Cabin. After all, while he admitted to Locke that he was faking the whole conversation, he did seem preety sure that's where Jacob lives. He didn't seem to be lying when they went there again in S4, and I don't think he was suddenly convinced by what happened in "The Man Behind The Curtain." He was clearly told that's Jacob's residing place.

So far most of us agree that Locke, who came back from dead, turned out to be MR. X that we saw at the beginning of the final episode of season 5. And we also know that, at the end of season 5, Jacob said he managed to find a `Loophole`. So my theory is that, Jacob had imprisoned Mr. X in some kind of time loop or event loop, and Mr. X wanted to break away from it.
Here is the exciting part. According to me, the first Loop that Mr. X was imprisoned may be the compass loop, you remember the compass is continuously given from Richard to Locke, then Lock to Richard, and then again from Richard to Locke. Somehow Mr. X manipulated the Loop and got out of it. NOW, what Jacob wants to do is, naturally, lock him up in another loop. That`s where Charlie`s Guitar, which he gave to Hurley, comes to help. As you all remember Charlie had lost his Guitar first time they crashed to the island. And after explosion, Hurley will somehow bring it back to Charlie, say it a reset or another time travel, does not matter. So here is your new Loop Prison, the Journey of Charlie`s Guitar back and forth.

This theory is a follow up sequel to a theory I wrote the other day entitled "Musings On John Locke". Both theories are an adjacent string of theories that belong to a larger family of theories in which I have established my ideas on the grander points of Lost. For this specific theory having read "Musings On John Locke" is the only one that I deem necessary as a prior read, but concepts from my previous seven theories do cross over, so for further clarification on those said ideas, please see my previous body of work. The series begins with "Reconsidering the Events of Season 3 Parts 1-3, followed by "Further Evidence of Desmond's Change", "My Stance On The Powers That Be", "Further Evidence On Random Versus Purpose" and finally, "Hurley And The Many Indicators Of Random". As with all of my theories, my ideas are not only my own personal impression of what is going on in the show, but are also influenced b! y other well written and well thought out theories on this site. In essence, I am writing on what I believe is going on in Lost based on a compilation of my own sensory perceptions, the ideas of others, and using the wikipedia style lostpedia website as a reference. That said, if any of my ideas have been said before, I hope that this acknowledgement here will suffice as a form of credit given. And without further ado...

A Philosophical Thought Experiment
Part I
Overview
I believe Lost is a story detailing a philosophical Treatise and Thought Experiment illustrated as a game of philosophy differences between two philosopher’s named Jacob and Juan (aka Mib). These two central core philosophies are generally considered the basis of all core beliefs of experience and knowledge. These basic philosophies form the foundation of human thought and thus cross all subjects. However, they especially cross the subjects of science (especially physics), psychology, religion, ethics, and sociology.

The best part of this theory may be that it is short but it may bring some food for thought.
Let us assume for a moment that there are at least two timelines or perhaps at least two universes. Let's say that Jacob is in one alternate time/place and MIB is in the other. If it is impossible for someone from one time/place to kill another and MIB wanted to kill Jacob, then a loophole would need to be found. Could our mixed up Ben be that loophole? MIB said he had been waiting a long time for it.

Lots of us here have focused on opposing dualities - battles between polar opposites such as "Dark" and "light" and "free will" and fate". But I've been thinking this show is more about the interdependence between both sides of a duality - about how each side needs the other to exist, and how, as time progresses, each will give way to the other in a cyclical pattern.
So that sounded pretty heavy. :) I'll try to make it concrete. Way back in Season 1, we saw how each of the Losties came to be on the island. For most of them, pretty "dark" or messed up circumstances had led them to be on the plane (arrests, deaths, terminal illnesses, being conned, etc). Then their arrival on the island erased those circumstances; each had a fresh start to be whomever they wanted. Out of the bad (the crash) came the good (a new start in life).

This is an argument against an assumption that many, including myself, have held about the final scene between Ben, Flocke and Jacob in "The Incident." In some ways, it's more of a counter-theory than a theory, so bear with me.
This theory comes from the scene in which Jacob acknowledges that FLocke found a loophole. Most of us have been assuming that the rule in question is that the MiB cannot kill Jacob directly, and the loophole he found was to have a third-party kill Jacob instead. What is odd, though, is that Jacob acknowledges that Flocke found a loophole before he had any idea why they are there. He says "Well, you found your loophole," before either Ben or Flocke say anything other than "Hello Jacob." Unless he's omniscient or has seen the future, he certainly does not know, at that point, that FLocke asked Ben to do something, that Ben will actually choose to go through with it or that the something that Flocke asked him to do is murder him. So, here's the theory. Perhaps the loophole has nothing to do with killing Jacob.

For those of you have read my many previous theories, I apologize for my absence and for leaving that string of theories left unfinished. I do intend to continue working on that series, but unfortunately personal circumstances have come up that have prevented me from continuing at the pace that I would prefer. This specific theory is not necessarily the next installment in the aforementioned theories but since some of my thoughts on the grander points of Lost do carry over, I still suggest that you read my previous body of work. I won't list them all here, as there are seven in total (if memory serves) but just scrolling through the lists of theories should provide you with what you need.

We all know that Lost is influenced by many great writers. Few of them are one of my favorites. Aldous Huxley, Carlos Castaneda, C.S Lewis, Stephen Hawking, Lewis Carroll etc. One of them, the last one, is important for this "theory"...
Charles Lutwidge Dodgson, better known by the pen name Lewis Carroll, was an English author, mathematician, logician, Anglican deacon and photographer. His most famous writings are Alice's Adventures in Wonderland and its sequel Through the Looking-Glass.
I am sure most of you have seen the animated film (one of my favorite animated films ever and the scariest one I have ever seen) from 1951.

Sayid is Sloth and will become Diligence
Hurley is Gluttony and will become Temperance
Sawyer is Greed and will become Charity
Jack is Pride and will become Humility
Kate is Wrath and will become Patience
Sun and Jin are Lust and will become Chastity

Llana may have have been Corruption and now has become Justice.

Not really much of a theory as it is pointing out something I noticed rewatching season 5 at the beginning. So Jack put's his dad's shoes on John Locke before he goes back to the island. Which is fine and makes sense at first.
It is assumed that upon arriving at the island, the Smoke monster or MIB (both maybe if they are the same one) tucked John Locke's body into that trunk and assumed John's identity. Well I got to thinking that what if at the end of the season Jacob is just assuming that MIB has assumed Locke's identity. But what I am thinking is that John did revive upon arriving at the island, that whatever Jacob did when he first revived him after falling from the window, it pretty much helps John to heal faster on the island..or in this case, come back to life.

My short Theory on MIB ("One of these days, sooner or later, WE'RE gonna find a loophole")
This is not a very in-depth theory, but I believe it could a crucial clue.
When MIB is talking to Jacob on the beach, I firmly believe that he says "WE'RE going to find a loophole" (Listen VERY closely).
I believe that this implies that MIB is part of a group of people that want Jacob dead. I have no idea whether or not MIB is simply the smoke monster, just manifesting as some guy who had been killed on the island (One of the Hansos?) Either way, I think that whoever or whatever MIB is, he already has his "army" against Jacob, and I believe that John Locke ties into this somehow.

So I've been thinking...and here is what I came up with:
Maybe, Like others have said, Jacob is from the future and so is MIB. Possibly from a future Dharma or organization to save the world by using the Valenzetti equation. Maybe they worked together and were friends at one point. Far into the future, people perfect time traveling and mind traveling. We know that Dharma experimented with parapsychology, so maybe MIB and Jacob were chosen because of their parapsychological powers, like when “Jacob” appeared in the cabin. It can be compared to Walt appearing to Shannon and Locke.

Maybe better understanding of what the island & the loop actually is will help to get the "big picture" of LOST.
The simplest explanation of what the purpose of the island is: life. The island is perpetuating life as we know it. Here is a simple timeline of the events in the loop that we know of:

So season 5 ended on one hell of a downer, and the writers were quoted as saying that we will wonder how they could ever do the same show again, in my case they were right, I did wonder that. But I think I’ve an idea of how they could, I’m not sure if I’ve got any new ideas here but I don’t think I’ve seen them in this combination at least lol
Jacob and MIB
What exactly they are I don’t know, we know that at least Jacob seems to be a mortal man, albeit with incredible power. The man in black, I am convinced is the smoke monster. I think Jacob and the monster occupy equal positions in the islands hierarchy, Jacob is the ‘man in charge’ who acts as a healer and spiritual guide to the islands people and the monster is the judge and protector of the island who weeds out all the people that are “unworthy” and defends the island. Then one day it decided that all the people were unworthy, it found flaws in all of them and killed them all off.

It’s funny, everytime I come in here looking for some answers, you all give so many questions to think about…
First, I want to say I really enjoyed the theory from the contest winner for WHH (excellent insight), but I still have one question;
Although the evidence is stacked up in favor of WHH, this would imply that all of the 77 losties are certainly dead. If WHH, then there seems to be no logical way that they would return from that, and cmon, you don’t need spoilers and cast lists to figure out that these main characters of the show are coming back. So how then?

ONLY THEIR MINDS WILL TRAVEL, WHILE THEIR BODIES ARE STILL IN 1977
I think "the constant" layed the ground work for what we will expect in season 6. But will be a twist on that formula. Instead of the mind being thrown back in time, it will be thrown in an alternate reality that has split off the main timeline.
So to clarify: only their consciousness is in the alternate reality, their bodies will be seemingly unconscious back in 1977.

Do you guys remember episode 6 of season 4, called “The Other Woman”? Most people don’t think it’s as good as the rest of the season, but it was absolutely my favorite episode. Just because I love Juliet :)
Anyway, back to the point. So in this episode there was a female therapist called Harper. Harper makes a comment to Juliet during one of her sessions that the reason Ben has a crush on Juliet is because she looks just like "her”. So who do you think that “her” is?

Hi People,
I wanted to wait until I had something to add to the theories, so here it is:
The island grant's immortality, as we have seen in the case of Richard.
The Temple is a place containing the 'elixir' of life, this is how Ben was healed and how Richard never aged. It is quite possible that none of the Other's age. If this is the case, Jack and co might well be hiding out there waiting to play their part in the endgame. 'They're Coming'.

Stick with me here (it's gets good!!!)
I am reminded of a line spoken by Alec Baldwin in the twisty thriller Malice from 1993;
"So I ask you; when someone goes into that chapel and they fall on their knees and they pray to God that their wife doesn't miscarry or that their daughter doesn't bleed to death, who do you think they're praying to? Now, go ahead and read your Bible, and you go to your church, and, with any luck, you might win the annual raffle, but if you're looking for God, he was in operating room number two on November 17, and he doesn't like to be second guessed. You ask me if I have a God complex. Let me tell you something: I am God."

Ben said you can never come back if you leave the island via turning the wheel, and he may have been right.
Because turning the wheel, you exit into the OTHER polarity universe. (thus why you end up at the ANTIPODE of the planet from where the island is, which is Tunisia.)
You could go back to the island, but it wouldn't be the SAME island.
Ben came back via the Ajira flight, but not to the SAME island. He was right, you can't go back.

his is just random thinking. Something crossed my mind and it is easier to ask a question here and not in the comment.
You all remember the scene when Ben instructs Alex to leave Othersville and head to the Temple. Right?
The chamber
So he gave here a map of the Temple (I am thinking she was never there, because as far as we know she is pretty good in all jungle actions, helping people and getting them out) and he told here that temple is the last safe place for them, the Others. He also told here that Locke & Co cant come with her, because the Temple is just for their people. A lie, of course, because Danielle was never a part of the Others (unless we overlooked it, and I wouldn't be surprised lol) so the reason why he told a lie was probably because something or someone was in the Temple at the moment so he couldn't take that chance.

Perhaps this has been stated before, but how's this for an idea...
Jacob is really smart, and from the future. Utilizing the sweet time travel properties of the Island, he's travelled back in time (along with his assistant, MIB) as part of a Dharma experiment to alter the timeline and prevent some future calamity. He's been doing this for a long time now, trying over and over again to get the all of the variables to line up just right in a perpetual loop.

I think that Christian was chosen to mentor Jack, turn him into a healer and a leader, but he is not his father. Much like Eloise raised Daniel for a specific purpose, Jack was raised that way as well (he walked among his family, but was not one of them).
This is why Christian would drink and fathered another family. He wanted a real family, his own children. But knowing his place and having to be far away from his real kids caused him pain and he drank to deal with it. Once Jack was beyond his teaching he finished his duty and died in order to be taken to the Island to act as a guide yet again.
Since Christian is not Jack's father, who is? Well, I think it is Jacob. Jack will come to the statue as the timelines merge and be the one to lead Llana, Bram and crew against MIB/Locke. This could lead to a final scene with Jack killing Locke or even Locke approaching Jack on the beach saying how much he wants to kill him.

This is my first theory on this site. Sorry if it has been mentioned before, but I don't have time to read all the theories or comments.
For the most part, I am a believer in the WHH theory. Time is a straight line and everything happens over and over and over again and it never ends.
What I think happens after the incident is the losties mind travel back to points in their past just like Desmond did when he turned the failsafe key. Desmond jumped to a time when something very significant in connection with the island happened.

This is a fairly long read but I think it’ll be worth your while, please feel free to ask me any questions you have.
Recently I’ve been thinking ……….Could it be that when Desmond turned the fail safe, he created an alternate timeline?
think about "flashes before your eyes" he instantly travels back to before he found the island and has a chance to change things. Miss Hawkins is there to tell him that he has to push that button or "every single one of us is dead" ( or something along those lines). So good old self pitying Desmond re-lives ditching Penny and buggers off around the world again. Back to this later.

Hey guys I just got a random theory popped into my head just recently. Now we all know that the island has its unique properties with time travel. Well I'm thinking maybe in the far future, a group of people discovered the Island in refuge from a world apocalypse. Now, in order to avoid the apocalypse in an alternative timeline, these people on the Island head out in to the world trying to make a difference. Essentially what I am saying is that a group of people lived on the island and different people on this island branched out into the world and played significant figures in the world like Gandhi, Lincoln, Jesus Christ(maybe explaining his divinity through the powers of the island?), Alexander the Great etc.

Hey. Long time reader first time poster.
So I have been reading Lost theories on this site for awhile. One mystery that people seem to be forgetting to even try to explain is why Sun is not in the same time( or timeline) as the rest of the Oceanic 6.
Alternate timelines has been a popular theory to what is suppose to happen in season six. However I do not agree that it will be a reset. This alternate timeline will be as important as the past 5 seasons. Again I ask why wasn't sun in the 1977 timeline?

This is in response to the poster who thought that Charlie's death was pointless and could have easily been avoided.
You are correct when you say that Charlie's death could have easily been avoided - it could have been. The thing is, is Charlie CHOSE to die, quite obviously. There are two reasons that Charlie chose to drown himself essentially. #1, Desmond had saved Charlie many times before. As Desmond said, he could alter the future but ultimately couldn't prevent what was meant to happen, and that the universe has a way of course correcting itself. Charlie got shot in the throat with an arrow in one of Desmond's visions, and drowned in the ocean trying to catch Claire a bird in another. Desmond works hard to "prevent" these deaths from happening, only to have another vision of Charlie's death soon thereafter, and Desmond and Charlie both realized that Charlie was going to die soon no matter how hard Desmond worked to save him.

This is not so much a theory, but a re-examining of episode centricity in season 5.
When "This Place is Death" aired I remember some debate over whether it was truly a Sun and Jin episode or a non-centric episode. Ultimately, it was accepted that due to the island/off island flashes focusing on Jin and Sun's point of views, it is in fact and Jin/Sun episode. Same thing happened with "Follow The Leader", although no great emphasis was made to Richard's point of view on the events happening, often the past/future flashes hinged on Richard, and in the least, he was a focal point in both storylines. I would say "Follow The Leader" is a loose Richard-centric episode.

I just rewatched "Greatest Hits' and "Through The Looking Glass" and have a BIG problem with Charlie's fate. I'm not desperate to have him back or anything like that; dead is okay if it's a necessary part of the storyline. It's just that while watching the events of his demise play out again it seems obvious that he didn't even try to save himself. Why not?
Because Desmond told him he had to die in order to save Claire??? If so, then he's got to be the most valiant Lostie so far, because it seems to me that he could've easily survived had he only tried a little harder.

his idea popped into my head last night for some reason while re-watching Through the Looking Glass. As with many ideas I've had about things Lost, it turns out I am not the first to realize it, but I haven't seen it mentioned here (there is some discussion on Lostpedia). Thought it would be worth bringing up and developing a bit though.
In Claire's flashbacks we see her mother, Carole, suffer a horrible car accident and remain in a coma for a very long time. Christian suggests to Claire that she consider stopping life support, as her mother may never recover or lead a normal life again.

Scientists have long thought that you can move about in all directions of space, but in only one of time. This statement could be false however, for we already move around the time dimension in our minds. When we remember a past event, we become absent minded, it’s almost as though we were physically there. Now imagine for a moment, this memory was vivid enough and contained all the sights, sounds, smells, taste, and feelings which come from an actual experience. What is the true difference then between this memory and physically being there? I would argue there is no difference; it would be a WHH super memory if you like.
A super memory contains all the information necessary to recreate, perfectly, an actual physical experience.

After the crazy finale that was season five, I’ve been speculating just how on earth season six will begin, and here’s what I came up with: This is based on the recurring pattern on previous season openers, whereby, usually, they begin in a brand new location that we’ve never seen before, with a new character we’ve never seen. Season two opened in the Hatch with Desmond, season three opened in Otherville with Juliet, season four in L.A., albeit with Jack, and season five in Dharmaville with Chang.
So, from this evidence, I’ve deduced that there are only really two major locations, that we know of, that are likely to be used for a season opener. And they are: The Black Rock slave ship, and the Temple.

Q-What lies in the shadow of the statue?
A-The one that will save us all
Now who is it that is actually lying in the shadow of the statue is it Jacob or is it John remember in the Incident Illana brings John's body to the statue and shows it to Richard after he answers the question correctly. I must say i'm not sure what to actually believe or what to think but honestly I think John is really dead and he's not coming back he may take on a role on the island like Christian but I think his story ends the way it began a tragedy. As far as the science explinations vs the religious ones at comic con this year Damon Lindeloff hinted at the show headed in the way of religious out comes when a fan asked was MIB's name Essaue he responed by saying "I Like the way your thinking." Also I think Desmond is the key to everything not much of a theory really just ramblings but would love to hear some thoughts

AN ALTERNATIVE TIME LINE WHERE CHARACTER DEVELOPMENT THAT WE’VE WATCHING IN SERIES 1- 5 REMAINS THE SAME.
I want to suppose again that if we are to see an alternative timeline then it will not be as a result of what Jack had done but this time I’m writing a theory to make a new suggestion. As I said in previous theories - everything we witnessed in series 1-5 is due to play out again as we saw it and when Jack woke up after 815 crashed on the island he had just tried to blow up the bomb at the incident site. I’ll write the new part of the theory first to save you reading all my ideas but if what I say below makes no sense then I’ve tried to summarise all my thoughts behind the prediction afterwards.
