Ok, not sure if this is really a theory but it's a question that I picked up after The Variable which seems pretty big to me but no one else has really picked up on... Where did Farady learn all his info about the future? He's been off island in the 1970's and somehow he's come back with precise details about the future!

- How did he know to go to meet Chang at the Orchid and at exactly that time (he looks at his watch and says 'right on schedule' when Chang pulls up)?

- Where did he learn about the 'incident', what is was, when and how it was going to happen (in precisely 6 hours)?

- How did he know that due to the incident Desmond would end up pushing the button every 108 minutes and that the one time he didn't (or was late to enter the numbers) it caused the crash of flight 815?

- Where did he learn that his mother was a Hostile and on the island in 1977? (Also did he learn Widmore was his father?)

[There might have been a few other points but I can't remember them of the top of my head]

The only explanation I can think of is that there must be someone else in 1977 who is from the future and told all this to Daniel whilst he was off island! I don't really like the thought of it but I can't think of another answer. Is it just me or does anyone else wonder how he had knowledge of everything?

I'm sure there will be some sort of Ann Arbour flash back at some point but it won't be for a while. What is his mysteryious source of knowledge? At that time Ben, Widmore and Eloise the main suspected leaders of this prophecised 'war' were all on the island and 30 years younger in the past, so whomever shared information with Daniel is either from one of their teams from the future or completely unrelated? Does it link to the 'What lies in the shadow of the statue' team? Are they the reformation of Dharma or somehow linked to the ancient origins of the island? Maybe they have knowledge of time travel or possibly of the the island's history, it's properties, it's future, how to manipulate it? I'm sure the details of the island's history are the key to the whole show and will be strung out as long as possible, but I can't wait to start learning about Jacob, Richard, the temple etc.

on a seperate note, I think there is some sort of time loop going on and that this is the one time when The Variable is going to change! I mean what would be the point of writing such an amazing show if it just ends up where it started going on and on forever in a loop? There has to be a break in the cycle and that's the whole point of the story, this is the one time when the future finally does change, when free will overcomes destiny! I don't believe it will wipe everything away and the plane will land again (I mean wasn't the plane already a few hundred miles off course?) but how it affects the future will be something we haven't even considered! And somewhere this War has got to fit into the whole equation! What it is and who it's between I'm not sure and I'm sure the only way we'll find out is to keep on watching!!

So yeah not much in the way of a solid theory but I'm trying to link together all the missing pieces as best I see to answer some of the questions.

Since now we know variables in the world of LOST = people,

Think of x + 1 = 4. 'x' (the variable) obviously equals 3. But the solution, 4, doesn't change.

In this sense, they can change things, but only certain things. In other words, they can change the means to an end but not the end itself;

x + y + 1 = 4, x = 1, y = 2

Think of Desmond's flashes of the different scenarios of Charlie's death. He changed how he died, but he still died. So, if Daniel were to have succeeded in "uncrashing" flight 815, the survivors would still end up on the island somehow.

Unless...

There's a different variable ('y') introduced to the solution, in which case the two amounts (or things/people) can vary and the ultimate product/solution can be anything, depending on what the variables represent.

Like so: x + 1 = 4y

So now we have to consider Locke, Sun, Ben, etc. in 2007.

Is this why they weren't sent to the 70's? To allow the possibility of actually 'varying' the past? Jack and company = x? Locke and company = y?

x(Jack) + (constant) = ???y(Locke)

Sounds like free will might still be possible... thanks to the late Daniel Faraday.

I think Jacob is Aaron from the future. This would account for the mysterious link between the shepherd family and the island and the importance of Aaron. I think at some point in the future, Richard and Jacob, who are alive on the island, mess around with the time travel... for whatever reason. However, something happens and Jacobs physical self or his consciousness is stuck between times or stuck in a time he isn’t supposed to be in. Richard, being involved in this, goes back in time also, but more successfully, to guide the island and the events on island... maybe to stop this disaster happening? This is why he is so trusted by Jacob. Perhaps Jacob is the rightful leader of the others in the future and his orders are final. Anything he says goes basically so when Ben tell Richard that its wot Jacob wants (which he has done on a few occasions), he immediately folds. He is in charge.

I think Aaron somehow goes back to the island just as charlotte did.. the island draws him to it at some point in his life (as it dus with anyone who ahs been there before). He maybe adopts a different name (much like sawyer did) for some reason... protection maybe?? Anyways, he, just as Locke has, becomes the official leader of the others due to the islands acceptance of him and possibly some miracle?. He lives his life on the island but (judging by his grey hair in ‘cabin fever’) at a certain age, possibly around Christians age, he time travels. Maybe he finds out about these mysterious flight survivors and all that happened on the island with regards to time travel etc and he is interested in gaining more knowledge. However, what he dusnt realise is that he is an intrinsic part of it all as his consciousness gets trapped way back in 1950’s which is when he is first mentioned.

Richard, tried to save him by going back himself... unfortunately without a Daniel faraday to help, he fails to get back to where he is supposed to be and subsequently has to live out his life on the island ... he doesn’t physically age however... he communes with Jacob frequently for what to do next. He probably begins to realise that all that has happened in the past 9and even before he was born), he has been intrinsically part of, as had Jacob. This is also why he is immediately excepting to the time travel explanations from sawyer etc... he knows its true.

I believe jacks Grand Father is brought to the island at some point (it was hinted that he had been there IMO when we saw him in a previous episode... he also just happened to have his dead sons shoes also suggesting he knew about the island and where jack was going... bit of a coincidence?) as aaron/Jacob was intrigued about his family. This is also why Christian can speak for him and why Claire was with him also in his little cabin. Because she was his mother... the reason she left her baby (even though she was so protective of him)_ was because she was advised to by her grandfather and her son. Effectively she wasn’t leaving him, as she was rejoining him as his adult self and possibly helping him (we know he needs helps as he tells john this ‘help me’... and if this is right, he needs ot get back to where he is supposed ot be). She didn’t need to be worried about him as she finds out he is well looked after by kate and then her mother and eventually comes back to! the island anyways... maybe he just needs to be out of the way for the upcoming war as he is really important.

hmmm is it possible?..

I believe the Comic-Con video was canon. It will occur in season six.

OK, here we go:

Eloise Hawking has been referred to by TPTB as a "temporal policeman". She wants to maintain the integrity of "whatever happened, happened" by influencing events as the way they happened in her original timeline.

Daniel Faraday signed up for that school of thought because of his mother (for more on this, check out Novikov's self-consistency principle). Once Charlotte died, however, he became determined to figure out how to change things.

Explanation of Constants vs. Variables:

I believe Faraday was correct when he said that people are variables... free will can effect the equations. There is of course a catch: you become a constant in the event of a possible time paradox.

Time paradox:

In "The Variable", Sawyer refers to Faraday as "HG Wells". While this is very humorous, I believe it also presents a clue. In HG Wells "The Time Machine", the protagonist cannot save his fiancee because it would create a time paradox. The paradox is this: if his fiancee didn't die, he wouldn't have a reason to invent time travel, thus negating him from going back in time in the first place. Therefore, every time he goes back in time to save her, she dies again.

I believe LOST is presenting a hybrid-theory of time travel, crossing Novikov's self-consistency principle with the idea of parallel timelines (like Back to the Future).

You cannot change things that represent a possible time paradox... these are the constants. Things that will not create a time paradox can be changed and lead to alternate timelines (variables).

The reason I believe alternate timelines exist is Desmond. Charlie Pace was supposed to die. Desmond's mind became unstuck and he could see into the future. He knew Charlie was going to die, but instead he saved him. Time tried to correct itself by killing Charlie over and over again, and Desmond continued to save him. Everytime he saved him, a new timeline was created. Eventually, Charlie gets to the Looking Glass and sets into motion a series of events leading to the Oceanic Six rescue and everything that has happened since the end of season three.

Charlie was supposed to be dead. The timeline that we are currently in on LOST did not originally happen.

Now going back to what I originally said about the Comic-Con video... I think something will be changed that causes another alternate timeline. So far, LOST has presented everything in the same timeline. From our perspective, whatever happened, happened. I think in Season six, we will begin to see alternate timelines as opposed to flashbacks. The Comic-Con video will be made by Faraday in a timeline where Dr. Chang believes Faraday.

How much will things change? Who are the constants and who are the variables? Can Faraday save Charlotte? Can Ellie prevent herself from shooting her son?

Can you change the past? A point of much debate.

On the fictional TV show "LOST" can you change the past? A point of MUCH debate. The truth, presumably, only known by the writers/producers who created that truth.

More importantly, perhaps, can you change the past, but when you do, things self-corect so that the outcome is the same? Wouldn't this both support and deny WH,H? A paradox about a paradox?

But even more importantly, perhaps, as articulated by Kate in several ways, SHOULD you change the past? Won't that just erase everything?

The current debate is not winnable, and may never be. Let's take, for the main event, the crash of flight 815. It already happened. We saw it happen. The characters experienced it. But what if they can use the bomb to make it not crash? WH didn't H, but in a new timeline. If 815 still crashes however, and this is important, will that be proof to anyone that WH,H? Will people say, "Okay, so they failed to prevent 815 from crashing, but that doesn't mean they COULDN'T have prevented it from crashing." No one will admit defeat or can assume victory in this debate, regardless of what happens (unless the producers issue a statement).

"That doesn't mean they COULDN'T have prevented it." Perhaps, perhaps not. But SHOULD they have prevented it? SHOULD they have tried? Or did they always try to prevent it?

So far everything that has happened, has happened. Eloise knew Daniel would be shot by her. He was wrong in saying Kate and Jack shouldn't be there; without them, he would never have gotten past the barrier and found the Hostiles. I still want to know how the heck Daniel knew the future! He knew WHAT the Incident was, he knew WHEN it was. How?

Fortunately, this whole debate over WH,H and WHdH/Timeline will likely be irrelevant come next season. Why? Because most of the characters are in their own present. And in that present, whatever happened HASN'T HAPPENED YET. Yippee! Locke, Ben, Sun, Illiana... they are all in 2007. Eloise and Widmore are in 2007. Eloise saying she doesn't know what happens "next" means that the loop, the repeating history that she knows of, is over. From here on out, it's all new stuff. Daniel was wrong, but he wants to be right; his mother sent Kate and Jack back to make SURE that Daniel got to the camp and got shot.

Jack, Kate, Daniel, Hurley, Miles, etc. may be in 1977, but that's their present. It's the same age they would be in 2007. If everyone had been wearing a digital watch this whole time, EVERYONE'S digital watch would read "2007" right now. That's why Jack can die, that's why Daniel can die (and may be dead).

Is it a coincidence that when Jack and company arrived on the island, it was exactly the same amount of time that the other survivors had been there? Three years? Do people from the same timeline have to end up in the same place (provided they aren't "skipping" crazily through time, like when Sawyer saw Kate during a flash).

So what if Daniel's plan doesn't work? Will anyone abandon their WH,H or anti-WH,H stance? Probably not; people hold on to them like religion.

And what if Daniel's plan does work? But then they go back and "fix" all that they un-did ("we never should have left the island" becomes "we never should have stopped the Incident") and they make sure the incident does happen, so that 815 will crash. Will that prove WH,H to anyone? Probably not.

So let's focus on what the show is really about... it's not about WH,H, it's about people. And their choices. And it's about the upcoming war (probably) and it's about how/when/where/why the 1977'ers and the 2007'ers (all of whom are of their 2007 age) will converge/meet/crash into each other/have a party with an inappropriate theme/meet for coffee.

Will they meet? Will they meet in 2007? Will they meet in 1977? In 2037? And whose side will everyone be on in the war that's about to happen?

I can't imagine that all of the 815 survivors will be left out of that war. And I can't imagine that all of the 815 survivors will even be on the same side in that war.

I think that this current season has been leading up to the "war" that Charles Widmore mentioned to John in "The Life and Death of Jeremy Bentham", and will be the focal point of the final season.
First off, Illana, Bram, and company represent one side of the coming war. Obviously they're very important to the coming episodes; let's look at the clues: they manage to get on the one plane that is destined to crash land on the island, they intervene in the acquiring of Miles by Widmore, and clearly have a prior knowledge of the island what with the question of "what lies in the shadow of the statue?"
So this poses the question: who do they work for? Clearly its not Widmore due to what they told Miles, and it certainly seems to not be Ben due to the fact that he killed Cesare.
So I present this theory: they are the new Dharma. One huge mystery we haven't learned a great deal about is the Hanso Family, and we have no reason to assume that they aren't still alive and well, trying to find the island again. We now know fully that the Dharma Initiative was sent to the island to experiment with and manipulate the island's properties, and since they're first endeavor was cut short (purge, anyone?), so why wouldn't they try again?
Throughout the history of Lost, the Others (who we've established now as the true keeper's, original inhabitants of the island) have always opposed any group that wants to "exploit" the island's wonderful properties: In the 50s it was U.S. soldiers, in the 70s-90s it was DHARMA, now Ben claims its Widmore, but as we've come to realize through flashbacks, this is more of a personal vendetta for Ben, and not so much an idealistic war with the Others in general. The real threat to the Others and the Island in general at this point is a revival of Dharma, just as it was in the past.

I believe that by season 6, this war will be clear and present and lines will have to be drawn. Once everyone has been realigned to the present time, Jack's gang will once again come face to face with Locke and the present-day Others, who will be on the brink of war with new Dharma. Jack and the gang will of course align themselves with the Others due to the fact that they've come to realize the Island is where they belong, and in turn will ironically become Others.
As time progresses and the war escalates, new leaders will emerge as Locke comes to accept he was never meant to lead the Others at all (keep in mind that his leadership is all a paradox of sorts; the only reason Richard Alpert ever came to visit John as a child was because John himself told him to). Indeed, Ben was never meant to be a leader for the Others either, as we've somewhat begun to realize.
Jack, the "leader" from the get-go, will come to realize that it was indeed his destiny to return to the island, as he will rise to the occasion as the new leader of the island. Although this might sound like a stretch, consider these facts: Jacob uses Christian, Jack's father, as medium to communicate to people on the island (after all, Christian himself said he could "speak on behalf" of Jacob), and the only other person to apparently be welcome in his cabin is Claire, Jack's half-sister. This, on top of the fact that in Biblical terms, Jacob is described as the "patriarch", and conveniently, the great-grandfather of Aaron, suggests a deep connection to Jack with the island.
So with both Ben and Locke relinquishing control to Jack, Richard Alpert will relinquish his power to John, who will become the new "middle-man" to the others and the island itself. If we look back on the show, its clear that the only one grooming John for any sort of future on the island is Richard, never Ben. This is because Richard knows quite well that Locke has the power to one day take over his role on the island, so that Richard, this mysterious ageless being, can finally die, having no more service to the island.
Jack and Locke will assume their roles as the new Ben and Richard, respectively, and lead the Others (which at this point seems like a completely incorrect name for them) to victory over the new Dharma initiative.
And while this last part is purely speculative (and kind of just a "wouldn't-that-be-cool?" moment), I like to think that the final scene could be Jack and company living comfortably on the island in the barracks when a plane comes crashing down on the island above them. As they run out to survey the scene, Jack looks to his right and says "Sawyer, go to the tail-end, you're a survivor, if you run you can get to the shore in 2 hours", then looking to his left, "Locke, get to the beach, stay quiet, we need a list of names in 2 days."

Consider this:

In a science experiment, the first rule of thumb is that you are only supposed to change one variable at a time. Changing too many things at once will contaminate the results.

I think Eloise sent Dan back to his death because she was already working on producing a variable to the equation (in this case- the variable is sending the O6 back to the Island) and knew that everything else in the equation HAD to, by default, remain constant - even though it meant sending her own son to his death. (Maybe in a previous iteration, she tried to make Dan the variable- but the experiment didn't produce the end result that she was looking for. If at first you don't succeed....)

In fact, I think it’s extremely important that Ben & Widmore were both HEAVILY concerned with getting the O6 back to the Island. I mean, these are two guys who don't agree on much of anything. Yet, both of them tried to facilitate an O6 return? I think it’s very possible that Eloise, Ben & Widmore have lived through enough time iterations to finally realize that the 06 are THE variable to the equation- THE way to reach the end point they have so desperately been looking for. The battle, it seems, is who gets to be in charge when that end point arrives. Widmore or Ben?

Think back to 'Flashes Before Your Eyes' and how Eloise Hawking was overly concerned with making sure Desmond left Penny to follow his path to the Island. She NEEDED that to remain constant just as she needed Daniel's death to remain constant. If these things didn't remain constant, it would ruin the entire experiment. In fact, it kind of makes you think back to all of our other characters and how their lives almost seem to have been manipulated in such a way that they had no choice but to end up on the Island.

I think she sent the O6 back, specifically, as the variable to the equation so that they would change things. Which may be why, for the first time, she has no idea what the future holds.

So let’s look at these again a bit differently:

Variable = "Well, I got some bad news for you, Jack. You don't belong here at all!"

Having been a fan of “expand slow resolve fast” type of mystery series such as Twin Peaks, X-Files, Millennium etc., I developed a habit of getting past the mystery cloud to focus on the core. In the case of LOST, at the core, we have i) the island-Egypt link ii) children, their birth iii) time loops iv) origins of “the others” iv) avatars like Jacob, Christian and v) the smoke monster. If we just focus on these, it is possible to develop a theory which fits to all what is revealed about these 5 factors. Once upon a time, in ancient Egypt, a social leader was cursed by the Pharaoh, because he had the Pharaoh’s son killed. According to the curse, he was placed on an island with his followers and zapped to a remote corner of the World. There, at each generation his original son would eventually kill him, and he’d reincarnate to kill his own father. Once the leader is dead, he’d stay around as an avat! ar until his son brings his present reincarnations to perform a ritual of re-birth. The ritual involves an “ankh” that is pointed by a massive statue which symbolizes re-birth. The place of the ritual and the island at large would be protected by a smoke Cerberus. His original son is Richard Alpert, who never dies or ages. Notice that he is the only one among “the others” who looks like an Egyptian. The last incarnation was Jacob, the next will be John Locke (recall the scene where Locke at the age of 5 drawing a picture of the smoke when Richard visited him). His followers (a.k.a. the others) spread around the world in generations (since they can have a child only outside the island) . They can get rich or be poor but their homeland is the island which they indavertantly return to get under the command of their leader. Technology has made these trips easier, yet it had also a consequence: probably at World War I, convinced by a branch of the followers (who were tr! ying to deny the curse) a figter plane has hit the statue that! pointed to the ankh(s) and destroyed. This has put the curse in a loop in time: some of the followers (a.k.a Oceanic 6) arrive (fall) on the island, made Desmond stop pressing the button, then escaped, only to return later and die in an electromagnetic “incident” which was mentioned in the “Swan Orientation Film.” The incident led to Desmond’s arrival to start pressing the button (hence the loop). AT THE END, Jack (like Apollo’s son Orpheus) will beat the smoke Cerberus (probably by killing Richard) and put an end to the curse, let the father’s soul free and lead his followers off the island.

I know this is an insane theory, so bear with me. I don't think that everything is right because it has some logic holes, but I do think it's an interesting idea and that pieces of it are spot on.

Last night's episode really intrigued me and I think that it may have begun to tie together theories about time travel that Lost has introduced over the past two seasons.

First, the show has introduced us to two different types of time travel. The first is "mind" time travel, like we saw in the constant. Desmond didn't physically travel to his past, only his consciousness did. His travel was kind of like being "unstuck in time", like Billy Pilgrim in Slaughterhouse-Five (my favorite book by the way).

Other examples of "mind" time travel are the rat in Faraday's experiment and Theresa's "coma" - Desmond learned that Faraday performed experiments on her and since then she's been in a time-traveling coma. In other words, her mind is bouncing around her life and she rarely gains consciousness... and when she does she doesn't know where or, more importantly, when she is.

The second form of time travel is physical, like we've seen this season with the losties physically being transported back to 1977.

So, we know it is possible for the mind to travel separately in time from the body.

Now to the meat of my theory. It's been proven again and again that - during physical time travel at least - the past cannot be changed. Sayid shooting young Ben ensured the future. Faraday trying to change the future ended up getting himself killed, just like Eloise knew it would happen.

However, the one thing that is outside the rules of WHH is mind time traveling - specifically Desmond. When Faraday communicated with Desmond, Desmond was able to receive a new memory and effectively change the future. What if Desmond was able to mind time travel backwards and change the past?

Here's where my theory goes crazy. This is what I think is going to happen during the incident. Desmond communicates with the losties by somehow mind-traveling back to a past version of himself when he was on the island post-hatch failsafe and tells Jack how to change their future in 1977. What logic problem wit this is finding a reason why Desmond would change want to change the past. If Penny got killed by Ben, that would be a given. Now that both he and Penny seem to be OK, there's a problem with his motivation.

Jack - with his newly acquired knowledge - denonates the hydrogen bomb, effectively wiping out all events that cause the Losties to crash on the island.

The game-changer for the end of Season 5 is that every losty physically disappears once the bomb goes off. Quick cut to Jack gasping and opening his eyes. He's sleeping in an airplane terminal, waiting to board Oceanic 815. What happened is that every lostie mind time traveled to the physical versions of themselves right before they boarded Oceanic flight 815. They all retain the memories that they have accumulated over the past 5 seasons. Then, they all look at each other with recognition of what just happened - whoosh - end of season 5.

Season 6 will start off the island once again and it will be about the war to control the current version of the island (which had a nuclear bomb detonated on it 30 years earlier)

Here's the last chunk of my theory. The other losties - Locke and Sun - and Ben DID PHYSICALLY TIME TRAVEL on Aijra flight 310. They time traveled to the 2004 "altered" version of the island, post-bomb detonation. On this version of the island, flight 815 never crashed.

Here's the biggest hole in my theory (there are others, I know) - shouldn't Sun and Locke be in the 815 terminal as well? I think they wouldn't because they are somehow outside of the reset timeline because they are now on the island. That is why Locke was reanimated when he returned to the island - he is existing in a place outside the reset timeline so technically he never went to the island, never left it to try and bring back the lefties, and therefore he never died. I can't explain Sun and Ben though.

I know there have been theories where the end of the series involves everything being reset. Wouldn't it be interesting if everything was reset at the end of this season (because of the variable human element) and the final season is about how the characters have a second chance and reliving the next five years differently?

I believe we finally have an understanding regarding the war that Widmore was referring to when he spoke to Locke. I think it is a war regarding changing time versus keeping it the same.

Eloise clearly does not want time to change, she believes whatever happened, happened. When Daniel goes back, he changes his belief, and feels that he may be able to change time. This may prove difficult now that his mother has put a bullet in him.

Now, I think the stage is set for a war between those who want to change the future and those who would like to maintain the current course. Dharma was interested in changing the future, changing the Valenzetti Equation. Widmore and Eloise are not interested in this.

I also believe that the incident will result in the pregnancy problems on the island due to the release of extreme electromagnetic energy. It may also result in the Losties being sent back to 2007. Bram and Ilana may well be on the Dharma side of things, as many have speculated here. They may be on the side of the war trying to change things. Daniel wanted to use the hydrogen bomb to blow up the island. Perhaps they will want to do the same. We'll see soon enough.

On a side note, I believe the others may be people meant to carry on the human race. Upon the end of the world, those on the island will survive and start over. From the very beginning, the others have wanted "good" people and have sought children. They did this because they cannot reproduce on the island and needed young people to survive after the world has ended.

Thus, when the world ends, the others are those who will start fresh. They have been on the island anticipating this for some time. The biggest whole in this is why the others would allow Dharma on the island to conduct future changing experiences, unless of course someone knew what would happen.

Anyways, that is my theory. Please feel free to expand or critique. I believe we may be seeing the shaping of the end on Lost now, where we are getting down to the real deal.

Why has some of our lostie’s landed in 2007, while others have flashed back to the year 1977? This is I think is a plot device by team Darlton and it involves course correction.

If Dan’s claim that all people are variables that have free will turns out to be true, then this mean the universe must find a way to course correct Jacks plan so that the incident can take place. How is it going to achieve this? Well first I’ll explain my equation theory

Think of reality or more specifically the world of lost, as being made up of one giant equation, where you have the variables of Locke and jack on each side. Locke on the left hand side of the equation in the year 2007, and Jack on the right hand side of the equation, back in the year 1977. Since an equation must be balanced at all times, you can therefore think of course correcting as just the universe’s way of balancing the equation. So whatever Jack is trying to achieve on one side, Locke does the exact opposite on the other side to keep the equation balanced, this ensures that whatever happened, happened and continues to happen.

So, what I think is going to happen in the finale is that Jack will stop the incident from happening, but at the same time Locke will do something in the year 2007 which will exactly cancel out what jack has done, and therefore the incident will still take place. These two events will happen simultaneously and will be shown by flashing back and forward between Locke and Jack. It will be a pretty good way to end the season and ensures the old Jack vs Locke, science against faith argument continues to rage into season 6.

Watching last night's episode, I was pretty sure Eloise was setting up her son to die in the 70's, and I kept thinking, "I really don't like this woman." But something struck me after the episode was over: she had told Penny that for the first time, she didn't have the answers...she didn't know what was going to happen.

Hmmm....interesting. She has never struck me as a liar, so...let's assume she was being honest. Why doesn't she know what's going to happen? Well, she said it was her son, Daniel Faraday screwing around on the island (in the past). To me, this confirms that when Faraday knocked on that door and told Desmond to find his mother, he had effectively made a change to the past.

I think when the writer's of Lost named Desmond's big episode "The Constant," they were purposely being misleading. Faraday had it right though; Desmond is the one person who can change everything. That is why both Eloise and Widmore found it important enough to show up at the hospital and check on Desmond...he can change things. The Constant is now The Variable and that makes Desmond a very important person.

One thing I hate about this is that to effectively end the show next season and avoid any possible time loops, The Variable would have to be eliminated from any equations. I hope this doesn't mean Desmond will die, but it seems that the writers kill off even the most well-liked characters.

I have to agree with other theorists that the Bomb lies in the shadow of the Statue. I also believe that you don't introduce a bomb to a storyline unless said bomb will be detonated, prevented from being detonated at the last possible moment (a bit cheesy), or....detonated and the extent of damages possibly limited by some "Island Power." What I mean by this last option is that a release of the island's underground, raw power could possibly negate the major effects of the bomb. All that might get damaged is a limb from Chang (aka Halliwax, Candle, Wickmund, etc.) and 95% of the statue. Chang loses an arm; the statue keeps a foot. Together they are almost whole. Here is why I think Chang will be there: his names. Halliwax ... Candle .... Wickmund ... these all could be related to a fuse. A possible hint by the writers.

One answer I don't have is related to Comic Con. A video was presented in which Chang was babbling about sending a video into the future. In the video, it sounds like Faraday is the one recording the video and making comments. In last night's episode, it never seemed like there was a time when this could have occurred. Faraday spoke to Chang, but then Chang blew him off. Faraday hurried to talk to Charlotte, but then Jack, Faraday, and Kate were almost immediately under fire. Did I miss a moment when they could have made the video? So what does that mean? Are we not exactly done with Faraday? Any insight on this one would be great.

I think what we're seeing occur on the island is the propagation of mistakes made in the past that cannot be changed because whatever happened happened right? Eloise killing Dan, Sayid killing young Ben, Desmond causing the crash of Oceanic 815, the Oceanic 6 leaving the island and returning, etc. these are all examples of one person making a decision on free will that results in a mistake that wasn't supposed to happen. So the island keeps drawing new people, or variables, in an attempt to find that one person who can make it through all the mistakes of the past and then make the right choices to prevent the one mistake that started this whole chain of events (the Incident). That's what's supposed to happen!

And in the end, I think Jack will be that person because of his recent attitude that "maybe we should just sit back and let all these events play out first". All the key players (Ben, Eloise, Charles, etc.) have made their choices based on knowledge of what's supposed to happen up to a certain point because they're all currently oblivious of what's going to happen next. So Jack is just collecting information before he acts, which is the best thing to do if you want to make the right decision.

If I remember correctly Damon & Carlton have often said that the theory of time travels they were trying to follow would avoid time paradoxes. If now we admit that the Losties can really change the future, then, a series of paradoxes might follow.

Consider time from the point of view of Jack & crew. Some of them were in 2004, some in 2007, but they all ended up in the 70s. Each of them is living his own life, and to them 1977 is the present.
From the point of view of an external observer, though, time is linear, i.e.: all the events happening in the 70s happened obviously before the 80s, the 90s, and so on. Then, anybody who has followed the linear flow of time without being detached from it, would clearly experience the second coming of the Losties in the 70s, and only later the first coming in 2004.
Think about Faraday's mother. She met the Daniel from the future in the 70s (what we saw in Ep. 5.14). The Daniel from her present would grow up exactly to be that Daniel who would go back in time. She already knew that, because she experienced it.
We know that in the show, people who have gotten in contact with the Losties in different moments in time do remember them. Think about Richard and Locke, or the meeting between Richard and Sawyer.

Now, the Losties hope they can change the future, because to them the 70s are the present. The problem is: all the events they are experiencing belong to a past that has already been written. Who wrote it? They did! They made all those things happen, because
all that belong to the past. So to them, it might seem that they can change the future, just because they are living their own present.
Daniel thinks he can change the future. The problem is that that is what he was always going to do. Daniel went back to the past to change the future, and his mother knew it. His willingness to change what happened had already happened. There is no escape. Whatever the Losties try to accomplish is exactly what has happened from the point of view of an external observer in the line of time.

Suppose, for the sake of argument, that the Losties can really change the future. Then, there would be another timeline different from the one they left. So, if they are going back to the future, to which future would they be going back? To their old future, or to the new one? If they go back to the new one, where Flight815 made it to LA, they might meet themselves! But if they go back to the old one, what is the point in changing a future that you cannot even experience and enjoy? What would the consequence be if they could really change the future?
It is pretty obvious that the classical time paradoxes would pop up and complicate the credibility of the story. It seems to me that is exactly what Darlton wanted to try to avoid.

Anyway, as we all know, the magic of Lost is that all these theories can be blown away surprisingly leaving us breathless!

I previously had a theory that the Series would end with someone in the past destroying the hatch so that Demond never forgot to push the button and never crashed Flight 815. There would be a scene where we see all our favorite characters waiting in line at the customs counter. This would be bittersweet, since they would never have formed the relationships that they did on the island, and they would still be left with all the fractured lives and issues that affected them pre-crash. Now, I believe that this will happen in the Season 5 Finale.

Jack will be successful in destroying the hatch, Desmond will never forget to push the button, the plane will not crash, and they will land safely at LAX.

Season 6 will be all about the story of COURSE CORRECTION. The War will be the battle of free will vs. fate. The main player in this war will be Desmond Hume. He IS the variable. He will retain some memories from the alternate timeline once he flashes back to the point pre-flight 815 crash. He, along with Jacob, will become the agent of course correction.

The series will end where it all began, with all our favorite characters crashing onto the island.

The Other who chatted w/ Daniel in the Orchid? Same Other Sayid "Leg-killed" on the beach? Why no age difference, it's been 30 years right? Is he "like" Richard Alpert? Does this imply the Hostiles have already infiltrated the Orchid? Is this a hint they've already infiltrated the Swan as well? Just wtf was this all about?

THE WIG THEORY is very sensitive information. What you are about to read may completely spoil the entire plot for the rest of the show. So read at your own risk and at your own discretion. Whatever you do, don’t wig out.

It all began back in the year 1846, when the first wig was ever created. This wig was no ordinary wig. The pieces of hair were genuine fibre strands taken from a recently deceased man. The man had died in mysterious circumstances at sea. No one knew who he was other than he was wearing a suit when he washed ashore and his name was threaded into the inner collar. The name read Jacob. This man was quickly buried upon being discovered, but a man named Jerald Hairpiece used this as an opportunity to get some fresh hair to create the very first bonafide wig. So he dug up Jacob’s grave only to find the body had disappeared, leaving only the body’s hair in the coffin. The wig maker thought it strange and very convenient that the only thing to remain was Jacob’s hair. But he didn’t believe in fate and pegged it as simple coincidence. 16 days later and the first wig was born.

The first man to purchase and wear this wig was a seemingly eternally young man named Richard Alpert who lived on a magical island but often visited the mainland to buy mass amounts of eye-liner. For centuries he kept the wig never daring to put it on in fear that his fellow others may make fun of him. But one particularly fine day in the early seventies, there was a cold wind blowing on the island of magic, so he decided to suck up his pride and try the wig on. The wig was very long. And the others did laugh, so much so it drove a very embarrassed and ashamed Richard to wander out into the jungle so he could cry without the presence of ridicule. After he manned-up about it he decided to go back to face his tormenters only to hear a young boy crying out for his Mom in the distance. This boy was Benjamin Linus. Richard approached Ben and conversed with him, and was so delighted that Benjamin did not point out the ridiculous nature of his wig during their chat that he told him! that he could one day join him and his friends in the jungle.

Richard threw away the wig shortly after this conversation, realising that he had gotten the validation he had needed, all be it from a little boy. That wig sat on the ground for a long time. But as stated earlier, this was no ordinary wig. This was Jacob’s wig. And the ghost of Jacob (now back on the island residing in a renovated cabin) wanted his wig back. The black wig was discovered later by Dharma folk who on one cold and stormy night decided to use this wig as a source for warmth by adding it to a fire. Of course, they did not know that this was a magical wig and when they threw it on the fire the black strands of hair created black smoke. The smoke monster was born. Or what he will soon be revealed as - THE WIG MONSTER.

This displeased Jacob very much as he knew he would never be able to wear it on his head again now that it was a big black cloud of smoke that liked to eat people so he cast out his net across the world to find other people who wore wigs that resembled his own in some way. Somehow he needed to get these wig wearers to the island. And then get them to turn THE WIG MONSTER back into his wig and then get them to go back in time to give it to him before any of this ever happened. Jacob was tired of catching colds from having a bald scalp and his cabin did not have central heating. He knew anyone who ever wore a wig would be invulnerable to THE WIG MONSTER as it would not kill one of its own.

First there was Jack. Jack was wearing a wig when he first met his future wife Sarah, who had just been in a car crash and broken her back. Because Jacob loved Jack’s wig so much he invested it with magical properties that helped Jack to fix Sarah’s broken spinal cord. This pleased Jack and Sarah much. and this began Jack’s journey to the island.

Then there was Daniel Faraday. Who just around his graduation from university was wearing a particularly devastating wig on his head. Jacob thought that he looked like Wayne from Wayne’s World only with facial hair. He liked this. It was also convenient that Faraday was the love child of two of Jacob’s loyal followers Charles Widmore and Eloise Hawking. He told them that they must get Faraday to the island at any cost so that he may sample the delights of Faraday’s lovely hair-piece. Although, by the time he finally arrived on the island, Faraday had a hair cut and this made Jacob mad. So much so he decided he didn’t want to talk to anyone for a whole two seasons and instead got the ghost of Christian Shepard to do all the work for him. Christian did not like to work. He liked to drink, and was most put out by Jacob’s sulking and laziness. Christian took out his anger on Michael Dawson by letting him blow up on a freighter because Michael had the least hair in the ! vicinity and he knew Jacob would not care if someone with little hair died.

But then there was Locke. Locke was special. Why? Because he was completely bald. Now Locke had dabbled in his past with wearing a variety of ever decreasing in hair wigs. But now he had finally decided to put an end to childish things and just go completely slap head safe.

Jacob liked Locke because he had no hair and that way, unlike most of the Dharma folk, he couldn’t rub the fact that he had any hair in Jacob’s face. Locke was special above all others. The Dharma people all had ling hair and that’s why Jacob ordered their deaths. Too much hair for one island. But he feared that now Locke was without a razor and clippers, his hair might grow back. So Jacob led Locke to the hatch where there were numerous amounts of hair tools in there that he could use to shave that bald head of his. And shave the hair he did.

Is everyone following the timeline so far?

So many wigs. So much work to do.

Benjamin Linus eventually grew to be a man and was so secretly enamoured by Richard Alpert’s wig from that meeting in the jungle all those years ago that he had never forgotten it and then he had one modelled after it. He only wore it when he was with the others. The first day he put it on was the day he took Alex from Rousseau on the beach. He wore it only with the others in order to honour Richard’s bravery that day. That, and the fact it was just so darn lovely on his head.

Sayid refused to accept the magicalness of the island the whole time they were on it. So much so that he was punished by Jacob and forced to wear the most horrendous wig of all after he left it. This wig can be seen in all it’s punishment-glory when Sayid goes to bust Hurley out of the mental institution. You can see the pain in Sayid’s eyes knowing this big mop on his head will be with him for at least half a season longer until the writers give him a haircut. He goes back to the island realising why he was punished and takes out his anger on a young Ben. Sayid knew little Ben would go on to wear wigs and could not bare the thought he might one day have to wear one again too. So he shot him.

Charlie died because he kept on letting Claire cut his hair every season and Jacob saw this as a lack of appreciation for having hair, so he thought it best that Charlie die for his sins. He also tried to hint to Jin many times over the course of the show that he needed to seriously wash his increasingly greasey hair by exploding him off rafts and boats so he would fall into the ocean and at least have a semi-hair wash if nothing else. Jin finally took heed of this and washed his hair when becoming a Dharma dude.

Other islanders who were brought to the island because they had a passion for wigs were Kate (who wore a variety of them whilst on the run evading capture from the feds), Boone (who looked like he was always wearing a wig), and Sawyer (who just had lovely hair). Libby wore wigs but because of her awful, varying tastes in wig hairstyles was sentenced to death for crimes against wig wearing.

Essentially, this show is all about wigs.

Now it is up to Locke who must tame the smoke monster and turn it back into a wig so he may deliver it back in time to a cold and bald Jacob in the cabin. This is what Jacob meant when he said to Locke “Help me.” He wanted to say “Help me… get some hair.” But could not muster the energy. It is very cold in that cabin.

Season Six will consist of much derring-do to get Jacob’s wig back before it’s too late, as without it, he will just continue to refuse to come out of his cabin and sort out all the island troubles. He is very vain our Jacob.

This concludes The Wig Theory.

Been a while since I posted... but Daniel is one of my favorite characters (he and Desmond) and I really hope he isn't gone for good... I have a few points that make me wonder if maybe he isn't.

I know the comic-con video might not be considered cannon so that could negate that whoe point... but... I have a few other points as well that make me question if Faraday is really dead or not:

#1. The Comic-Con Video
I think it has basically be determined that it IS the voice of Daniel Faraday behind the camera in the "video to the future" that Pierre Change records..you know the one that he says stuff like "me and all my colleagues are dead, apparently from a violent purge we are powerless to escape..." blah blah. Well, WHEN did Daniel record that video with Pierre if he is dead? It didnt' seem like Pierre was all to convinced about Daniels claims in this episode. Maybe in six hours when Daniels predictions come true he will be a lot more certain, and willing to talk and maybe record a video that will be broadcast through a pin wheel to the future...?

#2 The Wound
Was Faraday's wound really any worse than the one that little Ben Linus had and was just healed from?? Also.. remember the promo pictures at the beginning of this season where Faraday was missing a foot... there was a lot of debate about if that was a clue or a photoshop error... I never heard if it was proven one way or the other, but alongside the evidence that Pierre is going to lose a hand, it does seem a little more likely it was a clue..

#3. The Journal
Not sure if this proves or disproves anything- but just want to point out that back when Caesar (the guy Ben capped with the shotgun) was searching the office at the Hydra he found some of Faraday's notes photocopied from his journal. If I remember correctly they were slightly different from the first time we saw them when he way back in The Constant... So how did those notes get out there? Also- who has the journal right now? Did he give it to Pierre in this last episode or just try to? Is it still on his person?

So...those are just some details I wanted to point out that seem to suggest he MIGHT not be dead... although he sure looked dead there at the end.... but I really like ol' Dan so I HOPE he isnt'!

At the end of "The Constant", they made a big deal to show the page in Daniel's notebook reading "If anything goes wrong, Desmond Hume will be my constant." This is written in RED. Red as a color could represent chaos, death, urgency, etc. This is clearly a VERY important message in the journal.

My theory is that maybe Constants can do more than just save a time-traveling consciousness, it can ressurect you from the dead. I believe that only Desmond can revive Faraday. I do not think this will happen until next season. Other cases involving such a theory could be the ressurection of John Locke and Christian Sheppard.

Christian Sheppard was ressurected by HIS constant. He popped up in so many people's lives that any one of them could be this. I believe that Christian was revived by Jack initially and through his interactions with other characters, has become more and more of his former self. But I believe this sort of ressurection is only possible ON the island. So basically: Island + Constant = Resurrection.

John Locke was resurrected by his Constant. I believe his Constant is THE ISLAND itself. We all know the island can heal. Resurrection is similar but to a greater effect. This is why John is special, he has NO constant BUT THE ISLAND. There could be one other alternative. What if John Locke is his OWN constant. It is very possible that while jumping through time earlier this season, John came close to his dead body from the future. I'm leaning more towards the constant being just the Island.

So how does this all tie in to Daniel's Notebook?

Whoever gets their hands on this notebook is going to see the RED LETTERS. "If anything goes wrong.." is not specific enough to assume it refers to consciousness travel. It means something more. Eloise told Desmond the island wasn't done with him yet, so I think they are going to get Desmond to the island somehow to revive Faraday. It could even be possible that this "resurrection" is not physically reviving Daniel's newly shot body. I believe Daniel will live on because Desmond can go back and talk to Faraday in the past, thus getting any type of information needed. Or even just to say goodbye.

One question remains, Why did Daniel write this? He had to look in the journal to "believe everything Desmond was telling him" in the Constant. However, I think that Eloise maybe forced Daniel to write that, because she thought that maybe Desmond could save him from her shooting. She was very distraught when Desmond was shot, this is because she knows that he is The Wild Card. Only Desmond can save Faraday.

This theory may have some flaws and be a little hard to digest but I just thought the book-ends of Desmond's story wrapped around Faraday's in "The Variable" forshadowed this type of Constant Life or Death Rescure.

1- Vindication
So many of us "Others" have been saying ALL SEASON that a change in the original timeline is coming. For the most part we have been met with scorn and ridicule. We been called every name in the book and have basically been treate like Vincent poop... and yet here we are today with information as to what Faraday's REAL goal with the Island is: DANIEL IS TRYING TO ALTER THE FUTURE BY CHANGING THE PAST!! Wow WH,Hers is must hurt to have your own sacred cow foresake you. And yet the show has clearly been going in this direction all year.... but some simply chose to dig in their heels and refused to believe.

2- Jack's the man
Whether or not Daniel dies in 1977 from his gunshot wound remains to be seen but his wonderful notebook lives on. In it he has outlined his plan to negate the energy at the Swan station by detonating the Jughead. I posit that Jack's true reason for being in 1977 is to go ahead with Daniel's plan. Jack will use Danny boys notebook in order to negate the future. Jack has had many ups and downs since coming to the Island originally and I suspect that if he has a chance to change the future, he will do so. Whether or not he will succeed will not be answered this season. As we all know, Lost season finale cliffhangers are some of the best on TV so I think Jack will set things up in order to change the circumstances of the original timeline and we will have to wait till season 6 to see the outcome. But my hunch is that he will succeed (take deep breaths WH,Hers).
3- Locke and company
Seeing as the events happening in 1977 are occurring simultaneously as those happening in 2007 it will be interesting to see what effect Jack's medling will have on Locke and his group. If Jack is able to alter the circumstances of the original timeline in 1977 than the effects will be felt immediately by Locke and company in 2007.

I have always been curious as to why the writers keep having Desmond tell Penny, "I'll never leave you." Again this line was emphasized in The Variable.

We also know that Mrs. Hawking has told Desmond that the island isn't done with him.

Last night we saw young Charlie left in the care of a mysterious nurse.

Eloise Hawking suddenly appeared at the hospital. How did she even know that Desmond was in the hospital? I suggest that she's been following him. Why?

Eloise needs to make sure that Desmond does return to the island. How can she do this? First, Charlie will be kidnapped, perhaps even taken to the island somehow.

Secondly, Penny will die. It won't be Desmond who leaves Penny. It will be Penny who leaves Desmond, by dying. Desmond will blame someone for the death in such a way that it will lead him back to the island, perhaps to rescue Charlie.

So Daniel made mention that the Oceanic Six (and then some) are the variable in the equation. They have free will to change things and stop the plane from crashing. That’s great for them considering that they’re the ones that are probably going to cause the incident. Let’s just step back and look at it in a different way. Let’s say that Jack could actually stop the incident from ever happening and thus the swan will not be built and a button will not need to be pressed causing a plane never to crash. Let’s say that did theoretically happen thanks to the oceanic six. If the plane never crashed they would of never warped back in time to stop said incident and that would create a paradox and that’s a no no in storytelling. So, the incident must always happen, unless of course the writers have decided on paradoxical time travel, which would make LOST a little mehhhh.

So why didn't Richard recognize Daniel? Maybe with a gun pointed at you, even if you are ageless, you don't immediately recognize someone... but someone whom you captured 30 years prior and then who vanished? "Do I know you?" Is Richard just regenerating but not remembering anything?

Now we know why everyone thought Faraday was so crazy before... he was crazy. And now we know why he seemed so disoriented when he first got on the island, but later seemed more lucid. He was brain damaged, and the island healed him. Permanently, it seems, as he was off in Michigan.

Whatever happened... is happenING. Right now. Daniel always died on the island in 1977, his mother knew that. But was he right about the variables? That people have free will and can change things?

If he was right, his own death didn't much to demonstrate that things can be changed. Eloise knew he'd die. She slapped Charles. She knew.

If Daniel was right, though, and it's just a wondrous and bizarre coincidence that he died again, just like he died before, then maybe they can stop it from ever happening. And then what, they'll disappear?

I don't believe in coincidences. They make for terrible drama. There's got to be something behind them. Causing them.

Daniel was right AND wrong.

In the next two weeks, we'll know if Daniel was right, THEN wrong... or if he was wrong, THEN right. It's got to be one or the other. And in both cases, he was dead wrong. All that matters is if he was wrong before he was right, or wrong after he was right. The order of things.

This theory comes after watching The Variable and concerns the nexttwo episodes. It's not concrete, just an idea.

Throughout the episode "The Variable", we learn in flashbacks of Eloise Hawkings constant desire for her son to follow science and use his gift. At the end, Daniel claims "You knew this would happen" after she shoots him. What I found most interesting about this, is that in that event happening, the future seems like it must change. After all, it doesn't seem like Eloise has had Daniel yet, and however the events play out it must have an effect on her going forward. So did Daniel change the future as a result? Or was he right?

For a while, everybody thought that the bomb "Jughead" was buried in the Swan, but that wouldn't explain the electromagnetic force behind the wall. Dan explained that they built the hatch to contain this as a result of an "Accident". He thinks he can prevent the "accident", which in turn leads to the plane crashing and Charlotte dying, by blowing up a Hydrogen Bomb to negate the charge. Here's where my theory comes in: I think that the Bomb is "what lies in the shadow of the statue".

Only one person knew before anyone else that Flight 316 would fly directly over the Island; Eloise Hawking. The same Eloise Hawking who was alive when Daniel and the other Losties travelled back to 1954, and told them to bury the bomb. As a result she must know the bombs whereabouts. Furthermore, in the original 1977 the "accident" did happen, and they did build the hatch and had to push the button every 108 minutes. Eloise knows this, and so found it imperative to ensure her bright son Daniel grow up and go to the Island, in order to rectify the Dharma Initiave's mistake. The accident meant Eloise and probably a lot of others had to leave the Island, and Eloise has probably always wanted to go back.

As a result of Daniel going back, he discovered that the "accident" would cause Charlotte's death and as a result, needed a way to stop it any way that he could. However it will work, the "jughead" will negate the effects of the "accident". So here is my understanding of the timeline: In 1954, Eloise meets a man who tells her that the Others must bury the bomb as it is leaking. In 1977, a man who calims to be her son is shot by her for a pulling a gun on Richard Alpert. As a result of this, Jack will decide to follow Daniel's idea as he wishes to change the future and never end up on the Island. Jack will then ask Richard where he buried the bomb so Jack can do this in time.

Richard will reveal the bomb is buried "in the shadow of the statue". Sayid will reappear and lead Jack to the statue, as he hates being on the Island more than anyone else there, and will want to have never come, and in doing so, perhaps prevent Nadia's death. This will lead to "The Incident"; of which there are two possible outcomes, the bomb will or will not blow up.

I believe the bomb will not blow up, as in 2007 where Locke, Ben and Sun are, Lapidus gets taken hostage by Illana who asked him if he knew "what lies in the shadow of the statue". Miles was also asked this before he accepted the job for Widmore, by the group in the black van. They said if he didn't know, he shouldn't go. What they didn't reveal is that is where the bomb is buried, and that Eloise Hawking has sent them there to blow it up and correct the "accident", by negating the electromagnetic force underneath the Swan station. Of course the Swan station imploded, however all we saw was a giant ditch with no station left. It could be that the concrete containment of the energy is still there underneath, and that the electromagnetic force simply destroyed the infrastructure of the Swan itself. Desmond, may have experienced the same "remembering" that he did after Dan spoke to him during one of the flashes on the Island, which account for his so called precognition that Ch! arlie would die.

The threat of the electromagentic force underneath the Swan is still thee, whatever threat it may pose, and Eloise seeks to finish Daniel's work and correct it. This is contingent on Daniel coming back to the past, which of course means that the bomb cannot have already blown up.

If it does blow up, the story set in the present then gets thrown out of line, because the future would have been changed, and so nobody would have gotten on Flight 316. The reason they had to get on the plane, was because Eloise knew that they failed to blow up the bomb, and so sent as many "Variables" back as she could to try and alter the past and perhaps, prevent Daniel from dying. Her contigency plan is to have the group she sent to to the Island blow it up in 2007, but again, the whole "blow up the bomb" theory is dependant on the effects of the bomb having a positive outcome for Eloise. What that is at this point remains unclear, but what is clear, is that Eloise is doing her part in manipulating events to try and alter the past, and in doing so change the future.

After all, how did the Others know that a plane would be landing on that runaway? It could be that Eloise's influence us further stretching than we had known. It could also explain her being in the picture with the monk that takes Desmond on, as she could have known he had to go to the Island, to meet Daniel.

Overall, without underwriting any of the other key players (Widmore, Ben, Alpert, Jacob), Eloise could very well be hatching her own scheme to set things right, and maybe get her son back.

As Bob Dylan once said, "The Times they are a-changin'." I believe this could go for whats going on on Lost. Bear with me here, because this deals with unknowns.

Perhaps the O6 were not supposed to return. That was before a third party was introduced into play other than Team Ben and Team Widmore. Now the O6 are needed to save the island.

Who is this third party you ask?

The DHARMA Initative v2. I think DHARMA has been the villians the whole time. This show deals with spirituality at its very roots. What has been spirituality's greatest nemesis? Science. Don't believe that? Read a Dan Brown book, or look at history, heck, go back in time and talk to Galileo Galleli!

The island was saved by Ben/Others by the Purge. They saved the island, but as Daniel so blatantly mentioned, The Domino Affect of the Swan Station being built, and the fact the Others didn't know about it caused a wrinkle in the plan. They didn't know about the Swan, and without the Swan all the things, 815, the freighter, Ben turning the Wheel, would have not happened. The Others thought they rid the island of DHARMA, but in fact, they only put them at bay.

Over time, after DHARMA was wiped out, they still held on to the fact the Swan was still operational, this is why they had the food drop in Season 2, remeber that? We couldnt understand why when the DI was gone. But, perhaps, they were not gone, but were waiting for the opportune moment to return. They (TPTB in Ann-Arbor) kept the Swan operational. They sent the Losties food, to keep them in their place. Then, what happened? Ben and Widmore got into it over a grudge practically. That is what's going on there. Widmore sent the freighter, and Ben turned the wheel. Ok, now. The O6 has left the island. All is well. Except, something bad is coming. Widmore realizes the Island is in trouble from something, and a War is coming.

Now, Jacob/Richard/Christian has realized the island is in trouble, perhaps mostly on account of Richard's being able to leave the island and he finds that DHARMA is trying to get back to the island. For some reason unknown to us, the O6 has to come back to stop something. Perhaps they need to infiltrate DHARMA or something, I dunno. We know now, Widmore is kinda working with Eloise, and Ben is working with Eloise. So, who is Eloise working with? The island. Despite Ben and Widmore's hatred of one another, I think they are still on the same team, Team Island. Everything they do is for the sake of the island. They are trying to protect the Island from DHARMA. I think Ilana and Bram are with DHARMA v2. Their riddle is close with the one that Des had for the Swan. DHARMA discovered the location of the island the same time Hawking realized it. They decided it was their only chance to get back, and the O6 was just a pawn in that. The Island needed the O6 to come save the island f! rom DHARMA, but in the same way, it was a catch-22. By needing them to come back, it would bring DHARMA back. I think this sets the stage for the "war" and perhaps for next season.

Like I said, the O6 was not supposed to return, but because DHARMA is coming back, they had to come back. The Island needs them to do something to prevend DHARMA from doing whatever it is they do.

Also, with the O6, it has created an alternate timeline. Like, the alt-1985 in Back to the Future II. That is why we didn't see the Comic-Con video. The events of them coming have changed things. Small things that wouldn't otherwise have happened. Something they have had a hand in caused Chang to weigh in on Miles' answer to whether or not he's his son, differently then it would have happened. Because in the original timeline, Chang would have gone with Faraday and made that video. That is what Dan referred to as, "what Dr. Chang was supposed to do". That was my 2 cents on that as well.

I hope this made sense.. if not, tell me, and I'll try to clarify something.

Obviously tonight's episode through a bit of a wrench into the Comic Con Video, but you definitely can not disregard the video, the producers make too big of a deal out of it. I think there are a couple things that are important to notice:

1) It's definitely Daniel Faraday talking, there is no doubt

2) This is not meant to be a filmstrip like the others

3) Chang emphasizes that he only has one shot at this, so something is happening that is going to make it so that he will not have another chance to get this message out. Which is interesting since we know that other messages were taped after this was filmed.

4) Chang mentions keeping a pinhole open and that if he can get his message through to 30 years in the future then maybe something can be changed.

So here are my questions b/c of all of that:

1) Who is Chang sending it to, who does he believe is out there to get the message that could possibly change things?

2) What does the pinhole have to do with it? Obviously they could have just hidden a video/filmstrip in the wall and hope somebody found it 30 years in the future but he believed someone would see it.

3) Is Daniel really dead? Does this represent a different timeline where Daniel does not die.

Any thoughts?

I have only one thought to add, I think that video represents that something has changed. The Chang in that video is panicked, he is in a very desperate state to save the Dharma initiative. If he knew that his group was going to be wiped out then he would do everything he possibly could to stop that from happening and he could potentially do a lot to stop it from happening. Just my thoughts though I haven't had enough time to process.

After tonight's fantastic episode I realized why everyone came to the island. Seeing Daniel talk to Charlotte, having to try and destroy the Swan station before the incident, detonating jughead.

When Charlotte lay dying, and she told Daniel that someone that looked like him told her to get off the island, he realized both theirs and everyone else's purpose. None of them are supposed to be on the island. Charlotte (age 5 or6), and all the other dharma folks leave the island, or die. The jughead will detonate, destroying anything in it's path. If Charlotte does not get off the island, she will never grow up. If she successfully leaves the island she will either:

a)Be asked by Charles Widmore to go on a expedition to an Island with strange, and mysterious properties.
b)Live her life with never knowing of where she came from, and not be a pawn in destiny's game.

What Daniel is trying to do is to make B happen. He has to detonate the jughead, so that everyone will never come to the island. Eloise never told Daniel he would have to die because that would have the possibility to destroy the existence of time.

Everyone will sacrifice their families, friends, and lives outside the island. Their child versions will be able to their own destiny. There is freewill, but it can't effect your current life. Since everyone traveled through time, and with Locke unsticking the donkey wheel, everyone from Oceanic Flight 816 became a variable. They now have the ability to alter their younger self's time line. Destiny has her fickle way, and these variables can now toy with her. They are to alter their child version's time line so that they never come to the island. The swan will never exist, Desmond will never fail to enter 4,8,15,16,23,42, and none of the Oceanic flight 816 will come to the island.

Their lives on the island from this point forward though? That's what is up for season six to show us. Will Daniel's plan succeed? Will Eloise make it to the jughead in time? Find out next time on a very exciting LOST!

Okay, I'm a first time poster so please go easy on me lol. This is a short theory because it literally just popped in my head while watching "the Variable".

So, now we see that Jack, Kate, and company are going to try to stop the event that will eventually lead up to their plane crash. I was thinking that maybe in season 6 instead of having flashbacks and flashforwards they show us what would have happened to each character if the plane did end up landing in Los Angeles like it was "supposed" to. I could be way off but I have to say that this thought immediatly popped into my head while Farraday was explaing everything to Jack.

Maybe actually landing in Los Angeles will end up being a bad thing. We've always thought or were told that the losties were destined to crash on this island so maybe by showing us what would happen if they succeded in stopping the plane from crashing, we could see for ourselves how disastrous it could be. IMO, changing the events of the past is going to result in serious, serious problems.

Well that's it. It's not extremely thought out because like I said it just popped into my head and really got me thinking. I could be wayyyy off but hey anything is possible in Lost.

After watching "The Variable" I had an epiphany. Dan is wrong....Jack does need to be there. Jack is "the variable" because he was NOT there the first time around when Eloise shot Daniel. In the "original" timeline, after shooting her son, Eloise probably did a bit of research to find out who came back in time with Daniel. Originally, Jack was probably NOT there. So sending Jack back in time was Eloise's attempt to change "what happened".

Bram and the lady who asked "what lies in the shadow of the statue" are working for Eloise. She is the leader of what Bram called "the winning team." She used Ben and his desire to return to find a way back to the island. She planted two or more of her people on the same plane to STOP Ben from doing whatever he wanted to do.

But here is WHY she pushed her son towards math and science and set him up to go: He DOES have the solution. He wrote the solution in the notebook that SHE gave him....and he brought it back in time with him.

So now there she is in the 70s with the solution in the notebook and a variable that may allow her or someone to change the future.

I know, I know....lots of whole and flaws. Please help me fill them in!

Charlie Hume & Charles Widmore are one in the same…..
First of all, from the moment I found out that Alex was not Bens “real” daughter, I knew that the possibility of a false or skewed relationships between other characters could be possible as well. As much as Ben told people that Alex was his daughter she in fact was not.

So,…… after watching The Variable, I came up with my theory that Charles Widmore and Charlie Hume were one in the same…. You might be asking yourself “how can that be? That would make Penny Charles Widmore’s daughter and…. Mother?” Well, I thought the same as you, but soon realized there is no firm evidence that Penny is even Charles Widmores “actual daughter”, aside from Widmore saying that she is, which could be a lie….. as we saw with Ben and Alex. Would it be so absurd to theorize that Charles Widmore took Penny in as his daughter early in her life, just as Ben did for Alex? Well, that is what I believe happened.

Facts
1. Widmore leaves the island several times and impregnates “a women” ultimately leading to his banishment from the island.
2. We all assumed that the child would be Penny but then found out that Faraday is actually the child of Hawking and Widmore.
3. Eloise does not claim Penny as her daughter and Widmore never speaks of Penny’s mother.

Co-existing...
Now, there is the issue of Adult Charles Widmore existing at the same time as baby Charlie Hume (baby Widmore). Well, where do we see this happening already? Miles! Miles is in “Dharma time” existing at the same time as his infant self and he’s just fine.
So… maybe Charles Widmore grows up on the island, takes Penny in as a child and calls her his “daughter” because he finds out that she will be/is his mother! Also, since Eloise acquired Faraday’s journal, Widmore would probably find out about Desmond Hume being his son’s (Faraday) constant, so when a man named Desmond comes into Widmore’s life, it becomes obvious that Widmore would not want them to marry. Would you want your mom to marry a guy that would end up on an island for 3 years to push a button? No. haha

Things I need answered soon to help my theory
1. Who is Penny’s mother?
2. Is Widmore Penny’s actual father or did he just adopt her?
3. Does baby Charlie Hume get taken away from his parents Penny Widmore and Desmond Hume?

Predictions:
I think that baby Charlie Hume will be taken to the island (by hostiles maybe? They’ve taken children before right?) and travels back in time (like the O6 did, just further in the past) and grows up on the island with Richard and the other hostiles. This is where I believe our story for the hostiles will begin..

This is my first. May ramble a little, but with a show like this, how can you not?
Being that this is a show about coincidences and cycles, redemption and failure, i think it quite strange that there are 3 people named Charlie, all connected to Desmond (Charles Widmore, Charlie Pace and Desmond's own son Charlie.) In the scene in the hospital in the variable, Penny leaves her son Charlie with a nurse in the waiting room, while Eloise Hawking is also in the waiting room. Eloise's son Daniel had a fondness for the piano, but was not allowed to play in order to concentrate on his scientific gifts. Charlie Pace, however, is encouraged to play the piano by his mother, but rebuffed by his father, who wants Charlie to be in the family business as a butcher (which i also think will tie into the butcher shop where Locke's body was kept before the Ajira flight.)
I think Desmond and Penny's Charlie will end up being kidnapped from the hospital, be raised by an other (off-island) and somehow end up on the island where his father, desmond, keeps trying to save his life. I know it sounds crazy, not fully thought out, but I honestly think there's something in there. Please feel free to comment.

I was just thinking about all the questions that are still left and havent been solved. One of them, the polar bears, was bothering me. And i came up with a solution. remember how Ben went down to turn the wheel and move the island when it was in "danger"? it was cold down there, yes. And assuming from what we've seen with ben and locke, when you turn that wheel, it transports somewhere. When we first see Charlotte, she's an anthropologist, discovering the skeleton of a polar bear in the middle of the desert. (the polar bear also had a DI collar) My theory is that when the DI first began, they had the polar bears trained to turn the wheel on command. Instead of sacrificing humans to turn it and get transported. It makes sense right?? And remember how Sawyer was in those cages stepping on those buttons to get a cracker? Well thats possibly how the DI got the polar bears smarter.

I'm sticking firmly in camp WHH!!
The writers have spent so much effort drilling it into our heads that it would be pointless of them to reverse it on us.

However,I AM willing to accept that IF the timeline CAN be changed (which I don't think it can, but IF...) then only one man can do it. And that's Desmond.

They will fail at trying to prevent the Swan from being built. and they will fail trying to change anything that has already happened. The only thing that CAN change is Desmond's decision to leave the hatch and let the timer reach zero... but something will have to trigger that change of mind, and it can't be triggered by anyone else because it never was the first time around.

So IF Desmond can change anything, I think some kind memory will jump into his mind while he is in the Swan, a memory which he didn't have first time round (Much like the memory he had of Faraday telling him to find Eloise in Oxford). Only then might he make the decision NOT to follow Kelvin and to stay in the Swan and press the putton as usual and the plane will not crash.

So what I'm saying is that IF anything can be changed, then Desmond is the only one who can cause the change... However, until that day, I'm Sticking with WHH.

Thousands of years ago, A completely undiscovered REGULAR island was discovered by the ancient Egyptians. The ancient Egyptians have always been known by their evolution in science and magic, so when they took over that island they dedicated that island to be an immortal sacred place made only for the worshiping of a certain Egyptian God, perhaps the God most of us believe in now!

So to make it an immortal sacred place they first gave it its amazing healing powers and all the power stored inside it. and second the have to make it unfound! so that no one can ever reach it unless he was intended to reach it! so they made it constantly moving! unstable through time and space! so no one would find it and use its powers for whatever reason and ruin its original purpose.

This brings us to the others! the original people of the island! the hostiles! These people are the worshipers of the God the island was dedicated for in the first place. And they have some basics that makes them others! like talking Latin. Ofcourse since the island is made for a certain god, and the other worship that God they have to have a temple on the island! which is the one we saw. And to protect this temple lies the smoke monster which is not only responsible for the safety of the temple, but responsible for judging the servants of the island and protecting it from any intruders!

Talking about the others brings us to 2 major characters; Jacob and Richard. Richard is the last of the remaining ancient Egyptians who perhaps was given immortality to ensure that the island will stay the way it is, but Richard is NOT the leader of the others! at least not when any of the chosen ones is around! There are certain people who are chosen to be the leader of this group. Maybe that person is one of them maybe its an outsider like Locke! but the result is the same... that chosen one is the top voice to control the others. Chosen by who ? probably the God himself! and what makes him special ?? well! he can speak to Jacob! But then who is Jacob ?? Jacob is dead messenger of the God we're talking about. So not anyone can talk to Jacob, that's why they search for that one who can talk to Jacob, so that he'd contact Jacob and tell his people what Jacob in the name of their god wants!

The island was discovered by accident in the 50s by the US army, and is used for war experiments putting the island at jeopardy. But one of the people of the island got reports about the island's amazing powers, and started to research and try to locate the source of this energy leading to the island... that man created the first dharma station the "lamp post" for that reason, and by some means he actually go to the island with a huge amount of resources and guards to ensure their safety and he started the dharma initiative ofcourse first by building the pylons or the sonic fence to stop the smoke monster. And so grew the dharma initiative.

Ben then happened! Ben CONNED the others by making them think he could still talk to Jacob and that he is still a chosen one and all that. But since no one can contact Jacob but him, he imprisoned Jacob ( which is why Jacob told Locke "help me" in season 3 ) and made the others think that Jacob says that and Jacob says that! so that they'd blindly follow his orders... Locke was right from the beginning! Ben is the man behind the curtain! That's also why Ben tried to kill Locke once, killed him once more and was planning on killing him a third time!! Cause he could hear Jacob! which mean everything would fall out of his control!

I think that's about it in this theory! There's just an extra point I'd like to add in it! ... They say the statue on the island is of a god named Anubis, Anubis is the God of the Dead! in other words, he was the God who was responsible for protecting the dead and bringing them to the after life. That's probably the Egyptian God I was talking about from the beginning who the island was given its powers for. And that would explain the mysteries surrounding death in this show :D! hope you liked the theory :)
