If you think back to season one, a big story was that Jack was the leader despite the fact that he didn't want to be. Locke's line to him when Jack say that he wasn't a leader was, "and yet they all treat you like one." Locke said that. The man who has so much faith then obviously has faith in Jack to lead, and of course we all know he has an ongoing faith in Jack to believe.

In the past 2 episodes Jack's role as leader has been clearly highlighted. In "TLADOJB" Locke's last and most succesful attempt is convincing Jack. He also says earlier in the episode that he only needs to convince one and the other's will come. Ben later backs this up, saying that if Locke can only convince Jack, then the rst will follow.

In 316, it was even more clear that Jack had bought into to Locke's faith, and it wasn't until the moment that he read Locke's letter that they were finally sent back to the island. They only went back, because Jack found the faith to get them there.

If you noticed in 316, it didn't matter why anybody else had come. Sun was only going back for Jin. But Jack was going back simply because he believed. And again, it was only because he believed that any of them went back.

So what's the point? The point is that it is Jack who must lead the rest of them to where they need to be. None of them can get there without Jack to guide them. We've heard both Ben and Widmore proclaim Locke as the leader, but even Locke admitted numerous times that the leader is Jack.

What does that mean for Locke? Well it either makes him a spiritual guide, or the enemy. Clearly he has butted heads with Jack, but I'd almost have trouble buying the idea that Locke is the ultimate bad guy. Given his character's make up, it would seem that he is destined to be the intermediary. Neither good, nor bad, but still the hub of all that is transpiring.

The key to understanding what is going to happen is understand what each character stands for, and compare those to the light and dark forces we know to be at work. We know that Jack is the leader, but is he the leader of light or dark? He genuinely cares about his patients and has the ability to heal, and so he must be the leader of light.

So who is the leader of darkness? Is it Locke? Locke has been played by both sides, and seems not to make opinions between good and bad, but only to follow what he feels to be destiny. I still says he is an intermediary.

I think the leader of darkness is somebody who has shown the ability to hurt, nearly indiscriminately. The funny thing about evil, is that it can be done with a purpose. Blind hate doesn't have to be the only definition. In fact many people see the devil, not a being of pure evil, but rather one who would allow all people into heaven, and not just those deemed worthy. Thus he created his own realm for them to go. Does that make him evil? Do evil deeds make one evil themselves?

I have to say the leader of evil is Ben. Let's run down the obvious. He is clearly capable of evil deeds, killing Dharma, Locke, and ordering the hit on the beach in season 3. Even though he may of done each of these things as a means to a noble end, he still commited evil acts.

Now let's look at the not so obvious. If we're trying to find a character who exudes the ability to hurt, we have to find somebody who has the opposite abilities to Jack who can works miracles. What if the no-baby problem is Ben's doing. If he is the leader of darkness and has the tendency and will to hurt, then perhaps his aura or whatever you'ld like to call it, hurts others, and prevents them from having children.

Dharma clearly had the ability to produce Children prior to Ben's arrival. They had schools. Ben was led to the hostiles who saw an opportunity to use him. In the process Ben tricked Widmore off the island, and Richard eventually realized that Ben was not what they wanted. He was in league with the dark forces of the island.

Meanwhile Jack upon crashing was surrounded by healing. Locke could walk, Rose didn't have cancer, and as Locke said, "many of us survived with only minor injuries."

In short, the island brings out the traits that make you important. Jack has the ability to heal and extends healing to others. Ben is the opposite. Other characters may have certain traits that they can pass on as well. Hurley for instance had said many times that he brings bad luck to people. What is Jacob?

There have been many speculations on Jacob since we heard his name and saw his cabin. Let’s assume that Jacob really exists. When we first saw his cabin, Ben was referring something, just one thing, as Jacob. The theories about Jacob include that Jack, John, Ben, Sawyer, Eloise, Richard, Walt is/will become Jacob. (I used to believe that Jack is Jacob.) Some say that Jacob is the island, an electromagnetic life form or the God. We only know that about Jacob's identity is that he is a mysterious character?

Or is he a character, I mean just one character? We cannot be sure about that. Actually Jacob can be a group of persons/spirits rather than a single person. Jacob can be a senate or committee for the island. This senate, called the Jacob, consists of several spirits who died on the island and maybe some other alive people who are important for the Island. These spirits can be those of dead Others, Dharma members, Black Rock crew, Losties, Henry Gale, Naomi, Yemi and the smugglers, US soldiers, French science team, etc. Maybe all, may some of them are allowed to be members of the Jacob. There can also be alive members of the Jacob, but I cannot speculate more.

The Jacob sometimes selects a representative/spokesperson/leader among its members. The election of this representative can be one of various ways, or it may not be an election at all. The representative/leader has some authorities but he or she is not above the Jacob (the senate) itself. This representative carries out the decisions of the Jacob, but it is the Jacob that takes important decisions related to the island. The representative cannot, of course, be called Jacob since he/she is not; but he/she can speak on behalf of it.

The current representative/leader/spokesperson of the Jacob committee is Christian. Due to some reason, he became representative or was selected to this position after his body crushed to the island. In his life, for a time he was the head of surgery after all, he led some doctors. In the past, there were other representatives of the Jacob. Maybe one of these representatives was the captain of the Black Rock, who also led some people in his life. I mean, Jacob may be selecting its representatives among the ones who was some sort of leader in their lifetime.

If this is the case, why everybody talks about Jacob as he is one person? People refer Jacob as “him”. Ben was calling the being in the cabin as Jacob. Christian said that he could talk on “his” behalf. The reason can be that the Jacob does not want to be fully deciphered. It wants the living humans think that the representative is the Jacob and the representative behaves accordingly. Therefore people who can be in contact with the representative of the Jacob believe that the representative is Jacob. Maybe there are exceptions, like Richard. Maybe Richard is a member of the Jacob and is responsible for deciding who will be the leader of the living community of the island and inspecting the actions of the living leader closely. There may be several reasons why Richard is not the leader of the living himself.

I know there are several blank parts in this theory and some part of it is pure speculation. However, this can be indeed the case and this theory can explain several mysteries about the identity of Jacob and strange things on the island since the Jacob committee can contain members who are bad and good people. I know someone has already posted a theory on why Rose and Bernard are the Adam and Eve but I felt that my reasoning makes a little more sense.

The last we saw of Rose and Bernard was when the fire arrows were falling on the camp. We don’t know how many of the background characters survived but I’m sure that Rose and Bernard did.

My theory is that they fled together and made their way to the cave because they thought they could use it as a shelter. After they made it there the flashes start happening. Since they are there alone they have no idea what’s going on. All they know is every so often there is a bright light and intense head pain. After a few flashes their noses begin to bleed too.

My theory is that one of the flashes (one where we are not quite sure where it is in time) they laid down (this would have been in the past so the bones would no longer be there) and died together. Since they died by the time the next flash came they would no longer be traveling with the island because they were no longer alive, giving the bodies proper time to decay and eventually just be bones.

I’m not sure how long it takes a body to become bones but let’s say Jack and Kate and Hurley arrive in the 70’s, somewhere along the way (before another flash) they come across the cave and peek inside and see Rose and Bernard’s partially decomposed bodies. After the initial sadness that their friends have died they notice they are in the same spot as the mysterious Adam and Eve bones. They then come to realize that Rose and Bernard’s bones are the ones they see in the future.

Maybe Jack remembers the two stones he found on the bones and sees that there are none on Rose and Bernard. Perhaps there are some in or around the cave or he has some in his pocket, he places them on their bodies so that in the future he will remember it was them.

Now I know there are holes in this story, such as why would Rose and Bernard die before Miles and Juliet and Sawyer? I can’t answer that so my theory could be completely way off but I thought it made a little sense. Let me know what you think ;) Theory by Starberryum

For Season 1, the Monster and the Others were the bad guys. Season 2, the Others become more evil, while Dharma is discovered (their intentions are unknown). Season 3, Ben is revealed, along with a slew of other Others, who began to warrant our sympathy. Season 4, the freighter-people and Widmore are the bad guys, and Others become semi-good, Ben being more of an anti-hero then anything else. Now, after the Life and Death of Jeremy Bentham, Widmore is apprently a good guy, and Ben seems to be the bad guy. Also, Caesar, who apparently is more worryed about stashing sawed-off shotguns then finding food and shelter, could also be a bad guy. WHO IS THE REAL BAD GUY???

My answer is the Island. The Island is the bad guy.

The Island has manipulated every single character in the show to do its bidding. It has driven children to murder their parents (Ben). It has orchestrated vast kidnapping operations (Tailies, pregnant women). It rips people's arms off (Montand). It drives people to suicide (Michael, Jack, Locke). It drives people to insanity (Hurley). Widmore spent his entire post-Island life obsessed with the Island, causing him to attempt mass murder. Ben and Richard Alpert CARRIED OUT MASS MURDER DURING THE PURGE!!! If the Island is any sort of Divine Being, it is surely Satan or some sort of Demon.

(Perhaps Ben has caught on, and that is why he trapped Jacob, the Island spirit, in a cabin with a ring of gray ash...just a thought)
Ben, Widmore, Eloise Hawking, Dharma, Richard Alpert, the Others, Jack, Locke, 316ers, all of these were once good people, good groups of people. The Island changed all that. Why was the FDW built? To contain the Island's influence. Why did the US army bring Jughead to the Island? To destroy it once and for all!

The Island is evil; pure evil. This will be the ultimate revelation that will drive the final episodes of the show, leading to the eventual destruction of the Island.

Regarding the War predicted in 507 by Charles Widmore: It seems to me that Widmore the Wicked selected and "trained" a set of social misfits including a Murdering Vengeance-seeking Con Man, a Torturer, a Murderess, a Murdering African Drug Lord, a Heroin Addict, a guilt-wracked sanity-doubting Lottery-winner, a guilt-wracked Pregnant Woman and a guilt-wracked Doctor among others. His team then herded these emotionally-fragile “draftees” onto Flight 815 which was deliberately crashed onto the Island with the intent (I think) to induct them into his on-Island network of Loyalist supporters.

But Ben, having had many years to prepare, had a counter-plan. The Tailies were attacked on Night One - before Goodwin had time to prepare his List. The Night One kidnappers grabbed 4 men - all of them “tough, athletic threats”. One of these was Eko - who was a bit tougher than anticipated. On Night One at Lostie Beach, the Losties were NOT attacked by any kidnappers. But they saw some trees shaking and they heard “The Monster”. IMO, The Monster was protecting the Lostie Beach Losties from Widmore’s Loyalist on-Island supporters that night - and for many nights to come. Other than Scott/Steve, NOT ONE Lostie was murdered on Lostie Beach during Seasons 1-4.

Over the course of Season One, I believe that The Island tested and helped “heal” a handful of potentially “Good” or at least “Useful” Losties and by the end of Season Three, Ben had eliminated a bunch of Widmore’s on-Island Hater Loyalists - including Danny, Ryan, Mikhail, Bea, Greta, Bonnie and even Tom - before the arrival of Team Keamy.

At this point in the Series, Hugo - who has learned to believe in himself and his ability to Make His Own Luck - including the Miraculous revival of that dead DHARMA bus, has been returned to The island, sure of his Sanity, confident in his “let's do this” Courage and yet comfortable seeing Dead People that no one else sees. Jack, freshly returned to the Island, has now embraced his inner Man-of-Faith and will (I think) become more confident in his Ability to perform Medical Miracles. Kate, having experienced Motherhood (sort of) may now have a chance (assuming she’s now pregnant) to become a Full-Fledged Island Mother. Sayid - dunno what his role other than ninja combat and effective interrogation techniques might be. St John was dead and has now been Resurrected as a walking, talking, eating, sleeping “more human than human” Person. I’m thinking that he has yet to learn about his new capabilities, which might include “Christian-style” teleportation. ! Once Desmond sails back to The Island, he’s the Game Changer - the guy who can rewrite History. I think that before the War begins, the Grown Children, including Walt the Manifester will also have travelled to the Island.

The S6 War will feature combatants who can leap tall buildings in a single bound, teleport, read minds (I think) Manifest their Wishes and edit the past/present/future.

Their enemies will have similar capabilities and will have had time to master them. I suspect that Ben may be on a Personal Mission which may or may not ally itself to the Lostie Good Guys - and I suspect that there are three Forces at play and not just Ben the Possibly Good VS Charles the Possibly Bad.

Regardless, the S6 War shapes up to be a “humdinger” Theory by Roland

Not a very well hashed out theory but something that suddenly hit me....

Reincarnation, or the belief that the soul, lifeforce, mindstream, etc., survives death and is reborn in another body explains a great many things when it comes to Lost. Specifically, I believe the idea that the soul lives on forever may explain quite a bit of the show.

Most importantly, if you believe reincarnation is a big part of the show, you can assume that all of the Lostaways are reincarnations of very important souls -- they just don't realize it yet. They have not yet remembered their previous live(s). Once they do, this will help them fulfill whatever destiny they have.

This thought process perhaps also explains ageless Richard. Perhaps Richard has reached a spiritual nirvana whereby he no longer has to go through the cycle of birth-death-reborn (something most religions that incorporate reincarnation believe is possible).

It also can explain the Others' willingness to die and to kill. If one believes/knows you will be reincarnated, you are more willing to kill and/or die. Ms. Klugh telling Mikhail to shoot her, Juliet easily killing, Ben killing all sorts of people are examples of this.

It might also explain Locke and Christian being "reborn". Perhaps they are at a different/higher place than most and can "reuse" their bodies to continue on their journeys.

Perhaps Jacob is a "trapped" soul, which is why he asked Locke for help. There are all sorts of things the theory of reincarnation might explain.

I also think suicide perhaps "kills" the soul or slows the soul's journey to nirvana. That is why Jack couldn't kill himself, Michael couldn't kill himself, and Ben stopped Locke from killing himself only to kill him moments later.

After watching this past episode "The life and death of Jeremy Bentham" I feel that Ben could still be the good guy...kinda. Ben's only flaw is his jealousy issues. He sent Goodwin to his death because of his love for Juliet. For that action the island gave him a dose of reality by giving him a tumor. Fortunatly for Ben, Jack was the there to fix it.

Ben's jealousy towards Locke was also an issue in the beginning. He knew his people thought he was special and I don't think he was ready to except that fact just yet. Before this past episode I wasn't totally sold that Locke was the leader, after the "Jughead" episode it seemed that Locke was only special because he was told by everyone on the island that he was. Then he time shifts back to 1954 and tell Richard that he is special. So is it Locke that got the ball rolling on that "I'm special" that makes everyone in the future tell him he's special? Although the new episode of him resurrected makes me think that it is a possibility that he could be special.

Back to Ben. He was also jealous of Karl and sent him off to die although I'm not sure if he knew that Danielle was also going to die. After all of his jealousy he gets a real dose of reality. He loses another thing he truly cared about...his daughter. Ben has lost a lot in his past, his mother, his childhood friend(Annie), his love for Juliet and now Alex. All of which he has taken revenge on the people who took them away from him. I think we will find out what happened with Annie.

Dispite what Christian told Locke about moving the island, I think that Ben knew he had to do this. This was his task to take for all that he has done. He had to leave "Eden" as punishment, he knew that he had to go and redeem himself off the island. There is something about Ben that makes him special, he seems to always knows what will happen next, he seems to know where he needs to be and he always has a plan. There is something to that I'm sure.

So far off the island he has kept tabs on the O6 for the three years and I believe he has kept them safe even using Sayid to do so. After this week episode he knew that Locke could not commit suicide in order to get back to the island, he had to die and Ben knew he had to do it. Ben had to carry on Locke's mission to get the O6 back to the island and did so. His return to the island will be very interesting to me. Will he have redeemed himself for the island to take him back.

Now Widmore, I truly believe this man to be an evil, angry guy. If we start from the beginning of what we've seen so far he is a guy who wanted to be something but just isn't and that's what eats at him. In 1954, he was angered by the fact that an old man (Locke) knew the island better then he did. I believe he strong armed his way and made himself the leader even though he wasn't destined to be. Somehow Richard and Co. had to follow him possibly against their will. I believe Widmore did want to exploit the island like what Ben told Locke in season 4. Widmore could have been the one who brought in the Dharma Initiative to run all these tests on the island. Maybe Richard had to play along because he knew that this would bring in their next true leader Ben. Somewhere during this time frame Widmore and Eloise/Ellie was ousted and the DI was eliminated shortly after, thanks to Ben. I wouldn't be surpised at all if we are to learn that Widmore (through his anger or hunger for po! wer) accidently released the smoke monster from it's liar at the temple.

Off the island now, Widmore must have known that he needed to find Desmond. I don't know why I think this but I came to this conclusion after Faraday met his mom (Ellie/Eloise) in 1954 and said he was from the future and I'm guessing she became a beliver in time travel after Daniel disappeared shortly after that. Ellie and Widmore were together on that island at the same time in 1954 so there is that connection. I gather that Eloise encouraged her son in studying this time travel type of science growing up and Widmore probably funded it every step of the way to even include his whole Oxford education. Why? Because of Desmond. Desmond is Daniel's constant. Eloise knew that Desmond's destiny was to push that button for three years. Did she learn this from her son Daniel? Did Widmore use Faraday's knowledge of the future and send Penny to that monestary knowing that she would meet Desmond? Have him apart of her life fall in love then belittle him whenever he got the chance. M! aking him feel he needed to gain his honor back by racing around the world by boat knowing he will crash on "his" lost island.

Widmore's people in that bunker in the blizzard at the end of season 2 got a snapshot of the general location of the island. He can now get his freighter ready. What Widmore didn't expect though is that someone called Penny at that same time to let her know as well.

Widmore's first attempt: The Freighter

Naomi was instructed by Abbadon to gather all the loose ends Daniel Faraday(Eloise's time traveling son), Charlotte Lewis(Born on the Island), Miles(Born on the Island) & Frank Lapidus(The guy who was suppose to fly 815) on the freighter. I feel that the plan from Widmore was to send the science guys in first to disable the gas then send in the mercenaries after that to wipe out the others, the survivors of 815 and including the loose ends that I mentioned from the frieghter. Again it wasn't a success for Widmore thanks to Ben having a man on the inside, something Widmore could not foresee. His chance to reclaim the island failed.

But as a the door shuts a window opens. The group that wasn't suppose to leave...The Oceanic 6. Widmore's second chance to get the island back. I have to think that Eloise & Widmore are in this together, both of them have a strong interest in the island but neither of them are actively involved in getting to the island themselves. Widmore sends an army in but he himself stays back? Why? Is there something preventing him to set foot on the island? Does the island have to be clear of something before he can venture on it? What about Ellie? Why doesn't she try to get back? She seems to have all the information but no interest? Come on!

I feel that the interest of getting the O6 back to the island benefits both parties Ben/Locke - to protect the island from others and Widmore/Eloise - to take the island for power. It's the window both of them have. Unfortunalty the O6 are heading into a war without knowing it.
Ajira flight 316 not only had the O6 but I believe the majority of the tail section is another set of Widmore's mercenaries. I'm assuming that Jack, Hurley & Kate disappeared into seventies during the DI's hay day (Thanks to Jin showing up in a Dharma van). I think Frank landed the plane on the other island that Kate & Sawyer help build that runway. Something must have tipped of Frank and Sun (possibly the disappearence of their friends) to make them take that canoe and high tail it out of there. I would also assume that they eventually get to the original beach camp and warn the remaining 815 survivor's that trouble is heading their way. It would explain why Sawyer, juliet, Locke, Charlotte, Faraday & Miles found nobody there except two canoes and an empty Ajira water bottle. I wonder if we will see something to the effect of "resurrected Locke" trying to slows down Widmore's men in chasing after the other canoe with his past self, knowing he would only have to ! delay them just long enough for his past self to time shift out of there.

My last thought goes back to Ben, this second attempt at the island by Widmore has something in common with his first attempt. Ben has a man on the inside...Caesar. Theory by Goodwin

Tonight I watched episode 2.something called SOS. If you don't remember the episode, it's the one in which Bernard decides to build an SOS sign on the beach out of black rocks.

Towards the end of the episode (in a flashback) we learn that Rose, at the airport, witnessed Locke in his wheelchair. We also learn that Rose was diagnosed with terminal cancer, and was brought to Issac, a medicine doctor, who explains how he has the power to heal individuals. Issac explains that he can harness an energy located near his medicine hut, and uses it to heal people. Now, in more recent episodes we learn that the island is located in an area that is near an energy source, and that the energy source has the power to heal.

During episode, Rose explains to Bernard that she believes she is healed, and doesn't want to leave the island because she is afraid her sickness will return. Rose and Bernard vow that they will never leave the island. Besides Bernard there is a laundry list of male characters that want to go and/or stay on the island. However, other than Rose, I can't think of any female characters (that are alive) that have expressed a desire to stay on the island.

Now, I know that the obvious Adam and Eve is Jack and Kate (but as we've learned, obvious is usually the wrong answer in Lost). With the whole time travel thing that's going on, the full circle of events would be Jack pulling the black and white stones from the pocket of his dead body. But maybe, just maybe the black and white rocks were a clue as to who Adam and Eve were. And like I said they are the only couple that vowed to stay on the island, but who says Adam and Eve are a couple?

I know there are holes in the theory, but thought I'd throw it out there. I think Rose and Bernard are sleeper characters that are going to serve more than just background. Theory by danpcali

I have a few theorys on possible endings to season 6 of Lost.

I have a feeling that Walt, Aaron and Desmond are going to play a massive part in the season 6 finale as they are "special". They will basically be able to turn back time to stop the Losties from ever crashing on the Island in the first place. Below are two theorys explaining what would happen if this was the case.

My first one would be everyone (including people who died) who was on the Oceanic 815 flight will be at the airport waiting in the boarding area, you will be given the impression this is them at the airport before the crash. However, an announcement is made saying "Oceanic Flight 815" has been delayed.

You will see Jack go for a walk through the airport and he goes past another boarding area for different plane. Among the people in the waiting area are Miss Hawking, Miles, Daniel, Charlotte, Naomi, Desmond, Juliet, Ben, Richard, Mr Friendly, Widmore and Penny and maybe a few of the other minor bit player characters. We will see Frank go past in his pilots uniform as he will be flying the plane they are getting on.

As they have not been on the Island, he will not have any recollection of these people. However you will see him looking at them all then you will see him look at someone in the distance also looking at the passengers, It is Walt. They look at each other for a couple of seconds and Jack walks away. The final shot will be all of these people sitting in the waiting are and an announcement is made saying "This is a Boarding Call for Oceanic Flight 518"

Another way would be that, the shot is on a plane and we hear Frank over the radio, doing the captains speech and in it he includes "Thank you flying Oceanic Flight 815"....As the camera pans around the airplane, we see the 2nd group of people mentioned (Ben, Widmore, Desmond, Miss Hawking etc) on the plane and you see the plane start shaking and there is a flash of light and then it fades to black. Leaving us with the idea that it was them who crashed and not the Losties and they will be experiencing what the Losties did. Theory by Random Theory

okay, so in the season five episode "The Life and Death of Jeremy Benthem" abaddon (i think that how you spell it) takes locke to hellen's grave. now i don't think that she is dead for a few reasons.

Firstly, the first thing that i noticed was when locke was at her grave and talking about her we cut to abaddon for a split second and he sort of rolls his eyes in a way that made him look like he had a secret. then abaddon tells locke about how he gets people to where they need to go, and i think that, that much was true but that everything else was a lie.

secondly, i have tivo so i could rewind and everything, so i ran it back and realized what locke was saying about finding sayid who was in the middle of nowhere but not being able to find hellen. if she was dead then it wouldn't be that hard to find her. or at least not as hard as sayid, or hurley, or kate.

so i think that she is working for one of three people. ben. widmore. or the economist (whoever that is). and so abaddon and widmore were tring to hide her from him.

or that if locke saw her then it might be a reason to live and he wouldn't try to kill himself, and ben wouldn't stop him, and ben wouldn't kill him, and he wouldn't be on flight 316, and he wouldn't end up back at the island.

Never any "hostiles"/locke, ben, widmore and the fight for leadership

my first posted theory here and its based on a few conditions but ima shoot it out anyways. also i like to inject a lil humor in my writings, please take this on a light note in some regards.

in anticipation for the other night's episode Life and death JB, i've been re-watching a few key episodes of johns and during season 3 i threw in "the man behind the curtain" aka "ben's tale" for good measure. what i began thinking about actually didn't puritan to john that but instead a scaresly talked about group the hostiles. this theory begins it by presuming one idea and thought that "jacob" is the spirit of the island. "jacob" is the name for the island guide who has been and advisor and leader to the others including Richard, Widmore, Ben and Locke. Locke is just the next leader of the island (but back to that in a moment).

since we already know jack and co have been flashed back to old DI days what if someone passes along the information to chang and other top DI members that one day all of them will die. an inside job, someone within their ranks. hurley knows ben killed them all, although he's not sure when or how, and could pass this information along via "dude, you're all gonna die".

what if the hostiles never exsisted but were instead a way for everyone in the DI to watch everyone else and report on one another? look back at "jughead" and see how viciously the others attacked the losties on the beach and latter the group heading to the creek. i mean they took out a group of the us army as well, and i'm not talkin about new recruit wetbacks, these members were part of the secret testing of H-bombs. i really think that if the others wanted to take out the DI they would have snipped them out the minute they stepped out of the submarine. look how quick to act against locke, sawyer and juliet widmore is in '54. protecting the island is serious business for him and would have no hesitation in taking out some more scientist for the good of the island. but think back to the convo between dan and richard in that episode as well where richard said about a chain of command and getting his orders from someone. now this someone could be widmore and richard act! ually plays a guide/support role as he does with ben, but widmore is only 17 in this scene and i think he would have to get his orders from someone really. so lets assume that richard (or widmore) is talking to jacob at this time. the convo goes something like this' R - "jacob some men have showed up here and they appear to have some sort of bomb" J- "Tell them once to leave and if they don't kill them" years later on, R - "Jacob some more men have came here, they have a submarine and they look like scientist, want me to tell them to leave and if they dont kill em?" J - "No they need to stay for the new leader of our people will come from them. you need to work with them for the time being." so alpert and widmore go to the DI and say "hey we're here, we can help you with what you need, but we ask that you keep the main part of the institution just in this area in the valley here, keep most of our island intact."


Enter time traveling jack and co

we have seen faraday in the not-quite-built orchid station and chang is recording introduction videos for the different stations. is it safe to say that jack and co arrive right when the DI is setting up? So what if they arrive, give this future-death info to chang (and radinsky?). For whatever reason though they dont get to pass along a when or who and this becomes a problem. chang knows the power of the island the the FDW and knows this may very well be the truth. so he and the head members of DI set up a type of 'big brother' watch within the DI, everyone spying on one anothser. he goes to richard and says "hey we need you to pretend to hate us and 'attack' us from time to time". they use these attacks to kill certain members they're not 100% sure they can trust and also adding the realism by keeping everyone on their toes. but they never know that they get the real guy until they run
in with jack and co in 2001. And thus begins everyone watching everyone else and being all scared of the hostiles. i mean, the friggin pearl spies on the other stations, who to say it didnt spy on the barracks as well? keeping an eye on everyone and having the others shoot those they mistrust or get pissed off at that week is what keeps chang and the top other members in power and they think keeps them safe. if the others really were hellbent on taking out the DI every chance they had, why the heck was horace building a cabin out in the middle of the woods? how would he explain that? "its ok guys, uummmm..... i've got..... ummm hostile spray to protect me and olivia." the truth is that the others were only attacking when the DI wanted them to. but there is one thing the DI didnt count on, jacob.

enter ben coming to the island

he gets upset about his mom and goes to run away and join the circus, i mean others. he runs into the jungle and stumbles across richard and talks to him about seeing his dead mom in the jungle. take a look at richard's face when ben says this, he's pretty shocked, the island/jacob only shows dead manifestations to those who are truly special. he goes and asks jacob what's up with the boy, jacob says, he will be the new leader when the time comes. i think that jacob demanded the purge through ben both as a test of his strength and commitment, and to take out the DI finally as they have served their purpose to the island (bringing ben). Thus ben became the new leader of the others, still following orders from jacob, still working with richard as a guide and assistant in the background. the how and why of of widmore leaving is still a mystery.

so now enter john locke. when john says to ben to take him to jacob the first time he isnt scared about a backlash from jacob, he's scared that this means locke will take ben's place as the new leader. (maybe during his teen years he and richard went to talk to jacob who told him what he must do and thus signify he would be the new leader?) this is even more evident when he is surprised that john cant see jacob (he thought he was going to be able to) and then when he shoots john and demands to know what he heard from jacob. he is deadly afraid of loosing his leadership position in the others the way that he took it from widmore. to me this is very true as john has been prepped in many test of faith in the island, many trials, sacrifice (his dad) and personal sacrifice when he was going to kill himself as a conviction to the good of the island.

so why all the fuss to become the leader of the others? sure you get all the perks of island secrets, speaking latin, living in tents, talking to an old creepy dude in a cabin, and running around with a guy with 2 colored eyes. but what's the REAL significance to the leader role? i think that the island/jacob has a very powerful secret or power that it has been sitting (metaphorically or literally for quite some time). is this the fountain of youth? the secret of life? alien technology? atlantis? god like power? the holy grail? what ever it is i think this can only be given at a specific time and to the leader of the others, the leader of the ppl of island. events on the esland have changed in the past 20? years, jacob is getting ready to reveal this gift/power, but only to the leader, only to the chosen one. ben knows this. widmore knows this. they don't care about "protecting the island" or anything like that. they know this great secret is coming to surface and ! they are doing everything they can to return themselves as the leader of the others, the leader of the island. both of them, have been using john to keep get back in power and uncover this power when the time comes. the island/jacob selects leaders from time to time (if they pass the tests and trials) knowing that they will only be temporary unless they can pass the ultimate test. what is this test? knowing the true power/secret and not falling into the selfish qualities of humanity, but becoming more than a man, becoming a deity by choosing to give this gift up for the good of the world rather then themselves. this gift is a metaphorical forbidden fruit and to give this up easily, well that takes a special person, that takes john locke imo.

Regarding CW’s comment about 30 years of Peaceful Island Protection: After the 1954 not-peaceful slaughter of Team Jughead, there were about 17 years of possible Island Peace before the 1971(?) arrival of the DI. During these 17 years, the hot-headed, murderous, and yet cowardly Bully we all saw in “Jughead” may have taken control of “his People” - the (Latin-speaking) Family Richard. That must have been fun for them.

The 1971 arrival of the DI seems to have sparked a not-peaceful series of “hostile” attacks, one of which we glimpsed during Young Ben’s first day at DHARMA school. Roger Work Man also encountered some not-peaceful “Hostile action” years before The Purge.

At the time that Young Ben meets Richard in the Enchanted Forest outside the Sonic Fence, it may be that Charles The Cruel has been the “Hostile” Leader for almost two decades. I’m guessing that just before the Widmore-ordered Purge, Ben Work Man (Secret “Hostile” Agent) negotiated (or tricked) a much older Charles Widmore into pushing the FDW in accordance with a set of Rules they’d worked out between them. It was too late for Ben to stop the Widmore-organised Purge, but immediately afterwards, Ben the New Leader could start the process of winning the upcoming War. Theory by Roland

I am not sure about how much time passed, but Jack and John MUST have had another conversation after the short one they had in the hospital. Here is transcript of full Jack/John convo from L&DOJB:

[Bathing deeply]

LOCKE: Jack, how did you find me?

JACK: You were in a car accident and you were brought into my hospital. What are you doing here?

LOCKE: [Grunts] We have to go back.

JACK: [Laughing] Of course. Of course we do.

LOCKE: Jack, the people I left behind need our help. We're supposed to go back--

JACK: --because it's our destiny? How many times are you gonna say that to me, John?

LOCKE: How can you not see it? Of all the hospitals they could've brought me to, I end up here. You don't think that's fate?

JACK: Your car accident was on the west side of Los Angeles. You being brought into my hospital isn't fate, John. It's probability.

LOCKE: You don't understand. It wasn't an accident. Someone is trying to kill me.

JACK: Why? Why would someone try to kill you?

LOCKE: Because they don't want me to succeed. They wanna stop me. They don't want me to get back because I'm important.

JACK: Have you ever stopped to think that these delusions that you're special aren't real? That maybe there's nothing important about you at all? Maybe you are just a lonely old man that crashed on an Island. That's it. Good-bye, John.

LOCKE: Your father says hello.

JACK: What?

LOCKE: A man--the man who told me to move the Island--the man who told me how to bring you all back--he said to tell his son hello. It couldn't have been Sayid's father, and it wasn't Hurley's, so that leaves you. He said his name was Christian.

LOCKE: Well, he didn't look dead to me.

JACK: [Voice breaking] He died in Australia three years ago. I put him in the coffin! He's dead.

BEN: Did he tell you what happened to them after the Island moved?

JACK: No. No, he didn't.

Add to that the following observations about time passing:

- Sayid's drastic change (something happened and time passed enough for him to relocate to US, etc)

- Walt calling Locke Bentham, and feeling the need to go see Hurley about it.

- Jack's beard. :-)

- The character arch of Jack: His still being allowed normal rotations in the hospital, him not seeming too messed up on pisses or booze, etc.

- The scars from car crash and the fresh leg-cast do imply that Locke attempts suicide right after the Jack/John conversation. But, I prefer to think the make-up continuity guys got it wrong (with bruises) then the whole script pattern built over three years is messed up. (And, as per the leg cast, when I broke my arm I had *several* casts placed on it over a few months, so a new one can be put on it.)

Anyway, I just don't see how Lock could not have had another conversation with jack (keep aaron safe, keep jack safe, bad stuff happened because jack left, Ben is off the island, sawyer/juliet dying--all were NOT mentioned in the brief conversation we saw in the hospital.)

Just to restate. I am not sure about exact timing, but there is no way that is the only conversation that Jack and John had off island. John said almost NONE of the things that Jack told Kate/Ben he said in that meeting. There MUST be another conversation of Gregg Nations should lose his job. Theory by JSMILL

So I was watching "The Life and Death of Jeremy Bentham" the other night, and as I watched I noticed something. I noticed that when Locke was talking to Walt it was a very ambiguous conversation. As you remember, Walt was having dreams about Locke and what not. At the end of their conversation Locke is being wheeled away by Abbadon and Abbadon says "That's 0 for 2 Mr. Locke".

I think Walt is required to go back too. In Season 1 they made such a big deal about Walt and made many allusions to his supposed powers, that to just write it off would be ridiculous. I think that when they say that EVERYONE has to go back, they mean EVERYONE!

Aaron needs to return, Walt needs to return, Desmond needs to return etc.

The whole show has been about destiny and fate; there is a reason that everyone of those people were on that flight. There is a reason as to why these people went through what they did. I don't know why they are there or why they are needed but EVERYONE needs to go back, including Walt. Walt is a key of some sort, why kind of key I don't know. Theory by David

Watching the latest episode of Lost, I was really bugged by the seeming timeline continuity errors, which have been noted in the forum. Some facts strongly suggest that a month past between the Jack-Locke meeting and Locke’s suicide. Jack said Locke visited him a month ago, and the GREAT growth in his beard between the meeting and when he read the obituary suggests this. Also, Jack references flying these flights to find the Island every weekend, mentioning three different destinations. Ben also says to Jack ‘yes I hear you’ve been flying a lot recently’ (approximately). This implies several weeks, about a month. Sayid heard of Locke’s death at the same time as Jack, and since their discovery and Flight 316 only a few days pass.

However, the episode seemed to suggest only a short period between the meeting and the murder/staged suicide of Locke. There was nothing to indicate much time had passed. Locke’s injuries were all exactly the same as before, whereas in a month they should have healed somewhat. Ben and Locke spoke of the meeting with Jack as if it had just happened, and Ben said that Jack had just booked a flight for this weekend, so Locke’s meeting had had an effect. So where are all Jack’s other flights?

Another issue is the massive discrepancy with what people said Bentham told them and what we see of the meetings. It was emphasised before that Bentham had told Jack bad things happened because he left, everyone will die if he doesn’t go back, and so on. But Locke’s meeting seemed continuous, there was no indication of a second meeting, and Locke said none of this.

I believe that a possible explanation for this is that several weeks or a month or so passed between Ben’s murder of Locke and the announcement in the media, and that in this period ‘Locke’ – reincarnated like Christian Shephard was – visited Jack, possibly the others, and said what needed to be said. Locke on the island now is properly resurrected, a real live human being. But after his death for a short while he was an apparition like Shephard, or like the visions that Hurley has – created by the Island. This is why he needed to be dead. Apparation-Bentham visited Jack once or twice more, saying what needed to be said, about everyone being in danger etc. This explains Jack’s accounts of what Locke told him. It can also explain better why Jack spent his time flying around rather than meeting up with Locke, because these apparations, like his visions of his father, would appear and then walk off, Jack tries to follow but he has gone out of sight.

This also relates to Ben’s murder of Locke. On the one hand, he could have done it out of some malevolent motive. In this case, he is surprised to see Locke appear to him later. This could shed some light on his conversation with Jack about believing resurrection: a few weeks earlier he himself did not believe it, but was confronted with it. Or on the other hand maybe he knew Locke had ‘work to do’ getting the O6 back when dead, the Island working through him.

As I said, I found this whole thing quite annoying. I can’t see how the writers could have messed up so much with continuity – for example Jack’s beard was always used to show where he was in the timeline, but now seems widely incorrect, and even this season they have been repeating stuff about what Locke said and Jack’s flights. If it is an issue of not wanting to have too much time on Locke’s not-particularly-interesting-meetings with the O6, they shouldn’t have thought they could get away with just re-writing what has been clearly established over the last season or so. And you can’t show meetings without the essential bits, when in Jack’s case it appears to be one whole continuous meeting, not just a small part of it. Therefore I am suggesting what I think is the only possible explanation. It is somewhat strange, in the sense that the episode roughly makes sense and if you hadn’t paid much attention to last episodes you wouldn’t really have noticed th! e timeline/continuity errors. Also, this hasn’t been posed as a mystery, so it would be weird if in a later episode we see some Flashbacks back to this yet again (though it could be part of the Flashbacks showing how Kate, Hurley, Sayid got on the plane – one whole episode rehashing all the O6 stuff, showing the additional Bentham apparitions). So I don’t entirely believe this theory, but I think that it is the only logical explanation that is possible for what is otherwise a huge timeline mess up, re-write etc that I think the writers would not have done. After all, it would have been easy to make the episode fit around everything said about Bentham and this time period before. Theory by conchords

In "The Life and Death of Jeremy Bentham", Widmore told John something like: you look just the same now as you looked when I met you when I was 17 years old. This is a hint as to what's going on with Richard. When Widmore was 17, John was from the future, traveling back in time. Richard is doing the same - Richard is from the future, traveling back in time; and always looking the same age.

We have seen several people time traveling. As people travel through time, the "rules" to their time travel are not consistant. Sometimes the time travelers remember other times and other people - and sometimes they don't. Sometimes time travelers interact with the "current people and current times" - and sometimes they don't. Sometimes the time travelers are pushed around in time because of the flashes of light and sometimes the time travel is created in dreams and sometimes it's like daydreams.

Richard doesn't age because he is time traveling from the future. His time traveling behaves similar to Desmond's or John's or Daniel's. However, each of them behaves a little differently.

That's my theory. We must now wonder: since Richard is from the future: whose child is he? Kate might have a baby who grows up to be Richard. Penny might have another baby who grows up to be Richard.

Who else could have a baby?? Is any theory complete without mentioning Annie?? No I won't stoop so low as to bring Annie into my theory . . . Theory by Kay

It was pretty apparant from Jin's new duds in "316", that most of the losties (Kate, Jack, Hurley, Jin, Sawyer, Juliet, Daniel) are stuck in the 70's (Dharma's heyday). This proposed an immediate thought to me. The losties will inevitably come in contact with a young Benjamin Linus.

So here's my theory:

Ben Linus came into contact with the Losties during this time, and the impact of this meeting is the reason for his strange actions and behavior up until present day. This meeting could explain:

-Ben having a list of names of the 815ers
-Ben always being a step ahead of everyone and knowing things that he seemingly shouldn't
-Ben having extensive files on all of the main characters lives up until the point of the crash

During the time of the 815 crash, life amongst the others was peachy. Weekly book clubs, jovial moods, lots of Khaki and Starched collars. All of which changed when 815 crashed, almost as if Ben had been waiting for this moment for a long time, and now that it had come had began this inevitable "Oh crap this is it" moment, where he knew he would once again meet up with his "childhood acquaintances".

So after watching LADOJB I started thinking about Widmore more. Here is his time line.

1954
He is 17 year old boy. By age of 20 he could've become new leader of The Others.
70s
Ben arrived with Dharma
late 80s
Charles get kicked out from the island, by Ben (possibly)

Charles is back in the real world.

Penny
2004
She has to be somewhere around 30s so she is born in 70s
Is that mean that she is born on the island?
Most probably. I cannot see it any other way.
So she is born on the island. By some women. We don't know who. What if Widmore stole the baby (like Ben did) or what if Penny is a child of his very good friend and he wanted to protect her and take her of the island before the purge. He became very attached to the child. Like Ben and Alex.
Or Kate and Aaron.
None of these relations are biological (and they are always opposite meaning male/female, except with Sun, but that relationship is biological and baby (I always forget her name) has both parents) yet their relationship seem deeper then any other relationship between parents and children throughout the series. I just find it interesting.

Ben and Charles are so alike. That's when it first hit me. What if Penny is not biologically his. Then whose is she? I mean she could be his daughter or not. It would be more fun if she is not. But still I want to know who her mum is? Is she important? hm....

She must've left the island as a girl like Charlotte. But surely she has to have some memory of the island. Then I remembered the little station with the Portuguese men. They phoned her and they said 'Miss Widmore, we found it.' They found the magnetic anomaly. But how did they know what to look for? They were searching for Desmond, right? So she must've knew where Desmond was. If she knew where he was, then she knew about the island. She assumed he is stranded there. Where else he could be. Especially if she was born there and learned some mysteries about the island. Thus she has a memory of it. They said 'We found IT' We found the island. She was looking for the island. Was she looking for Desmond at all? How much she knows?

'I have a lot of money, Desmond. With enough money and determination you can find anyone.'

Determination.

Just throwing this out there. We haven't actually seen much proof that Jin and co. are actually in the past at this point. Sure there is the new Dharma van Jin pulled in, but what if you consider just for a second that Dharma has simply been reactivated!

It's not impossible. Locke's replacement of the wheel could have easily snapped them to the present. It would answer a lot of questions regarding why did Sun, Frank, Locke, and Ben, not wind up in the same time as Jack, Kate, and Hurley. Meanwhile in the 3 years between when they started flashing and the 06 left, it's conceivable that Dharma has reclaimed at least part of the island.

Now, I don't like this theory actually, because I would like to see a Lostie Eye View of the Dharma days. And I believe the season is actually headed towards ending with either a face to face meeting with the "incident" or the purge.

There is also the matter that we have seen Daniel back in the Dharma days, however they of course could all travel together into the past in a future episode, or Daniel (who is by himself at this point) could use the Orchid to travel to the past alone. He was the only one we saw.

I'm just throwing it out there, because it does explain why everyone didn't go to the same time during the 316 crash. The Dharma van could be just misdirection. There's no other proof. Theory by Locke4God

Hello all, this is my first time posting on this website but I am an avid reader! I wanted to pose this question to you all, and correct me if i'm wrong but Charles Widmore stated in "Life & Death of JB" that he was the leader of the "others" (if we are still calling them that!) for 3 decades or 30 years. Well we saw him last time at around 17 so that means he left the island when he was 47, no? Penny looks to be at least 30 so could it be possible that Penny was born on the island and doesn't remember it?

So if we are saying that Penny was born on the island then let's think of why Charles would be banished from the island. I bet when Ben committed the purge against DHARMA, he saved Annie, his only true friend on the island. If this was the case, maybe when Ben finally joined the "others", Charles and Annie fell in love producing baby Penny which put Ben over the edge and caused him out of jealousy to banish Charles, Penny and Annie from the island? Desperately wanting a child of his own, he then stole Rousseau's baby and raised Alex like his own. This may also explain the "pregnancy" problem that arose for no apparent reason. This could be a way of punishing Ben for ousting Charles from the island. Give me your feedback! Theory by EriKa

Yes you read the title properly, Benjamin Linus is dead.

We now know the island has a history of reincarnating or at least reanimating the dead in some capacity. We saw this with Christian Shephard and now John Locke. It is fair to discern from Lockes' complete physical reincarnation that Christian too has been reincarnated along the same process. Locke ate fruit next to Ilana on the beach, something the dead wouldn't be too fussy about doing to keep themselves alive. We have not received any confirmation of Christians' situation, but Lockes journey makes it fair to assume Christian too lives again.

However what does this have to do with Ben? The answer is compex yet simple, it involves Jacob and it involves sacrifice. Let's rewind back to our visits to Jacobs cabin. Inside amongst lots of dust and possible red herrings, we see some strange jars filled with bodily fluid. The colour of each differs (blood, yellow bile, black bile, and phlegm). There has been some speculation as to what these are already, and a popular theory is they are the remains of failed island pregnancies, in essence sacrifices Jacob has demanded. I agree Jacob has demanded them, however I believe instead of them being failed pregnancy offerings, that each jar is a sample of each 'resurrected' person. That means one for Christian, one for Locke amongst others....and one for Ben!

Yes ladies and gentlemen, Ben at some point in his past has died. We have no reasonable way of figuring out the when or how of his death, but we have been presented enough clues to at least determine he was killed at one point. If we take the show at face value as of episode 5x07, we are aware that Jacob can communicate through emissaries. These emissaries we can assume are either ghosts of special dead people, or the reincarnations of his right hand men. Christian acts as Jacobs servant, reincarnated after the 815 crash to facilitate Jacobs agenda. However this has not always been the case, as Christian has lived a life off island, raised a family etc. Therefore who have facilitated Jacobs agenda previously?

Richard has not as he has never seen Jacob. Locke is almost there, being groomed by Jacob and I believe that now Locke has died he will be able to fully see and interact with Jacob if he returned to the cabin. This doesn't answer Bens case though. I posit that Ben left the island once before prior to his turning of the donkey wheel. His journey was not conditional of never returning, he was never exiled. Instead he may have had a mission like Locke to perform in Jacobs name. However the only condition was that he had to die, just like Locke and just like Christian. More specifically I believe that the right hand man of choice goes through a grooming process which culminates with an off island death, and island ressurection. At which point they are fully embraced by the island. Ben died before the 815 crash occured, we will see his off island death through flashback, his reincarnation and his first complete interaction with Jacob.

Therefore the Ben Linus we see walking around since 815 crashed (both on and off island) is completely down to island ressurection. For the naysayers who believe that the reincarnated would die again if they left the island, if Jacob cured cancer for Rachel and stopped a gun from killing Michael, it can keep whoever it wants alive. Upon death, a sample is absorbed and taken for presentation to Jacob in his cabin. A true physical mark of the sacrifice, as part of the ceremony of rebirth. Theory by Snaketongue

OKay, not going to go in depth- you can always google stuff or look it up on wiki yourself.

I don't know who is good or bad or what exactly is going on- BUT what I do think is:

That the LOST island is the lost island of Atlantis: this would explain why it was said to have disappeared after a failed invasion of Athens- because our island can disappear- and come on, the FDW is OLD!

Tying Atlantis to the island another way is that the reach and scope of the Atlantian strongholds stretched all the way to Egypt-
Which we all know about the hieroglpyhs in the swan hatch & on smokeys temple.

And smokey's temple is the resting place of Anubis- Egyptian god of the underworld, who weighs the hearts and sould of the soon to be dead (or dead already) to determine what happens to them- I think that Smokey brought Christian Shepard back to life, and has done the same to Locke 2x now. He also judged Juliette, and Ecko- the flashes and images seen reflected in the smoke monster. I don't think the smoke monster ever wanted to kill Locke- when he drug him however many seasons ago- Locke was going to be used by smokey for something, much like how Danielle's crew was possessed by smokey.

And to round out this little idea I have in my head, is that Richard Alpert is either immortal by his own right, perhaps a mystical Atlantian, or someone reguvenated by smokey, but he is most def. not normal-

I almost wonder about the Templar Knights, but that is far stretching, but the theme of protecting the island and reincarnation keeps popping up- and the Templars were devoted to protecting the Holy Land & relics they felt could get them closer to God or Christ. Because Christ had ascended into Heaven, they couldn't get ahold of any of his bones, much like the skulls of saints that they carted around with them onto battle, but I think there is something in the Temple very important, something Smokey is guarding, and it's alot more important that whatever is left of the Others.

And how exactly the Templars end up on the island? Well maybe it popped up once and there was a stronghold built on it much like Tomar in POrtugal? Maybe Richard is a leftover there to protect the island because of it's magical powers? (I.Jones & The Last Crusade anyone?)

I haven't really thought through this as much as I should, as you will see by some of the holes in the theory. But I've tried to throw out a lot of ideas so that people can build on them/make them better. Please do so!

Fact: Ben grew up on the Island during the Dharma days. Fact: Jack/Kate/Hurley/Sawyer/Juliet have all flashed back into the Dharma days. (Remember what Harper Stanhope said to Juliet - "you look just like her"; yeah, that's cuz she IS HER).

Therefore, since these people flashed back to the Dharma days, that means that Ben has known Jack/Kate/Sawyer/Hurley since he was a young boy, and therefore knew that they "had to" come back (i.e. so that they could fulfill their destiny and end up on the Island in the Island's past).

Why did Ben kill Locke? I think that learning that Jin had survived spooked the hell out of him.

If Ben grew up in the Dharma days, then he knows who among the Oceanic 815 survivors is "supposed" to be alive in the Dharma days. Jin wasn't one of those people (i.e. Ben has no recollection of Jin). So, the fact that John just confirmed that Jin is alive, plus the fact that Ben rightly assumes that everyone who was left behind flashed back to the Dharma time, means that Widmore has again 'changed the rules.'

Upon this realization, I think some of Ben's basic assumptions about his ability to control the Island, and his relationship with Locke (see immediately below), were changed.

--Ben/Locke relationship has changed--

I think Ben was being sincere (for once) when he told John in the hotel room that he was protecting the O6 and John so that John "could lead." This would make sense if Locke had previously led the Hostiles during the Dharma time, and/or if Locke is Jacob.

--Proposed Ben timeline--

Consider that it is possible (maybe even likely) that Ben's personal timeline looks something like this:

1) Ben arrives on Island as a boy;

2) Dharma, led by Widmore and a faction of the Others we saw in the 1950s, controls the Island;

3) the Hostiles, led by Richard and a faction of the Others who oppose Widmore, are out of power and fighting Dharma (who knows why);

4) Richard recruits Ben (recall the jungle scene in Man Behind the Curtain);

5) Sawyer/Jin/Juliet arrive, join Dharma (as we'll see in Lafleur);

6) a couple of years later *in Dharma days time* Jack/Kate/Hurley/Sayid? arrive, and join Dharma through their connection to Sawyer (who has now lived three years since he last saw them);

7) Locke and Ben arrives in the Dharma days time via the now-repaired Orchid vault (see # 17 below);

8) Ben finds the younger version of himself, who he tells everything he needs to know about the future to control everything that happens during his life (i.e., the "rules," or things that have to happen). the older Ben dies because of this (perhaps because he broke the basic f-ing laws of physics by talking to his past self) in front of his younger self, in a very 12 Monkeys-ish fashion;

9) younger Ben and Richard take orders from 2007-Jesus-Locke and carry out the Purge (do Jack/Kate/Hurley/Sawyer all die in the Purge??!?! that would be messed up), which also somehow results in Widmore getting booted off the Island;

10) Ben somehow takes power from Locke, who becomes Jacob, and is trapped by Ben by the circle of ash;

11) Ben rules the Others for a few years;

12) Locke crashes on the Island and slowly regains power from Ben;

13) Ben moves the Island;

14) Ben and the O6 get on the Ajira flight;

15) Kate/Jack/Hurley/Sayid (?) flash from the plane back onto the Island in the Dharma time;

16) the rest of the Ajira flight, including Lapidus, Sun, Ben and now resurrected Locke, crash on the Island in 2007;

17) Ben and Locke **repair the vault in the Orchid station** (who knows, maybe Caesar is a metallurgist?), thereby allowing them to travel back in time to the Dharma days without having to turn the wheel (which is probably why Widmore had it created in the first place);

--Locke-as-Jacob is backed up by the development of Locke's character--

When you look through the show's history, it seems more and more like Locke's story is about him being trapped or enslaved. Examples - 1) in Cabin Fever, when John was born, he was immediately locked in the incubator; 2) later in Cabin Fever, we see a teenage Locke trapped in a locker by some jocks; and 3) later in life, Locke's back is broken and he's trapped in a wheelchair. To me, a VERY logical (4) is when Locke becomes Jacob, and is trapped in the cabin by Ben (read: circle of ash).

Part of the Jeremy Bentham story was all about this part of Locke's personality. He HATES that he is not in control of his life. For all his talk of destiny, he only likes destiny when he feels that it is something that he is creating ("don't tell me what I can't do"). When he realized that Abbadon was a Widmore-plant, it really steamed him, because it made the one great thing he's ever had in his life just another example of how he is trapped.

--Putting it together--

When Ben arrived in the hotel room, he saw Locke about to kill himself and knew he had to stop him, so that Locke could fulfill his destiny and come to lead the Others (and eventually go on to order the Purge and perhaps later die and become Jacob; "you have too much work to do").

But when Ben learned that Jin was alive on the Island (probably assuming that Jin was also in the past/Dharma time), he realized that something had changed. This, combined with learning that Locke was about to make contact with Eloise Hawking, made it clear to him that he had to speed up the process of Locke "becoming" Jacob. That's why Ben said that he would "miss" Locke as he left the hotel room and Locke's dead body. Yes, he knew Locke would be resurrected on the Island, but he assumed it would be as Jacob, who he could control, as this is what had already happened in Ben's past (which is Locke's future).

What Ben does not realize, however, is that the course correction will bring Locke back to life *as* Locke, and Ben will need to convince Locke that he killed him "for his own good". If Locke believes him, he's again being manipulated, but destiny will be carried out. If he doesn't believe Ben, then he won't fulfill his destiny and Widmore will never get kicked off the Island during the Purge.

John lock makes a huge revelation to Ben, telling him about Mrs. Hawking...
when he does, we can see (once more, since the beginning of season 5) that Ben pauses.
Pauses to think / calculate / connect points. sometimes in an external silence, other times surprised.

We all know that Ben's #1 aspiration is to return to the island. When he turns the FDW he cries
saying to Jacob "I hope your happy now..." he knows it’s going to be hard or impossible for him to return
after turning the FDW.

In what way impossible or hard? that’s what my theory is all about...

The big impending war is between all the forces trying to own the island. it’s a multi-dimensional war...
Soldiers that manipulate course of events using time jumping techniques (id call it "brute force course correction"...)
combined with a physical challenge of getting on and off the island (land post).

Now...not only Ben exiled Mr. Windmore from the island, he exiled the entire executive part of the DHARMA initiative.
The rest, Ben killed in what’s known to be the purge. (why? maybe the DHARMA execs knew what’s going to happen so they all ran to
turn the FDW???)

so who are the DHARMA execs?
Windmore, Hawking, Abbadon, Dr. Marvin (who may still be alive out there),
and many more that we know of or never gotten to hear about.

Ben, after turning the FDW, lands in the "exit" at a random time (we know it).
When he does, all the he wants is.........

to find the land post! (bringing the O6 back with him is not in the scope of this theory)

Had Lock never told Ben WHO he was told to turn to (Hawking) and WHERE (LA) is she to be found, the restless Ben would have
probably spent the rest of his life hoping between continents on a quest to spot a DHARMA exec who operated
the land post. Once lock makes the revelation, Ben no longer needs him alive. Ben kills John but not only...

The bulk of this theory has to do with the particular relationship between Locke, Ben, Widmore, Jacob, and the Island. In between, I hope to incorporate other characters and events into this as well going as far back as the pilot episode and as recent as the death of John Locke.

It goes without saying that LOST is the best television show on Earth.

For obvious reasons the title of this theory, "THE CIRCLE", implies exactly how LOST is structured in terms of time (or space-time to be more precise). Ever since the pilot, the eye motif has become a signature theme on LOST. Each eye, like each character, is slightly different and thus, each "eye" has a different story to tell of how they came to be there. Notice that "eye" here is a pun for the "I", or subject, like Locke, Jack, Sun, Kate, ect. The first half of LOST centered on flashbacks (i.e. the past) in relation to the immediate events that took place on the island. Whether it was Jack running to find Christian's empty coffin because of his vision or Sayid wanting Shannon not to shot Locke because of his memory of betraying an old friend to find Nadia. Sayid said something interesting to Shannon in that same episode (I think it was the "Greater Good"): He tells her that "if you do this, you can never take it back." And here we begin our theory:

CLAIM 1: LOCKE'S MURDER WAS NECESSARY FOR BEN TO RETURN TO THE ISLAND AND WAS NOT AN ACT OF 'EVIL'. Ben killed Locke out of two reasons, one takes primacy over the other. First, vengeance for knowing that Jacob helped him survive when he shot John in Season 3 and that he could hear Jacob speak. Second, because Locke cannot die of his own doing. Ben knows this. Widmore's attempt to convince John to visit the 06 was clearly a suicide mission! If Locke kills himself, he CHANGES THE RULES!Obviously, Ben does not want this to happen again. In other words, Ben does not want "the circle" to, using Sawyer's infamous words, "come back around". However,Locke's death in the "real" world is most likely permanent, meaning that Locke cannot possibly leave the island again and stay alive. Hence, in "Because You Left", Ben tells Jack to bring everything he wants in "this life" because he's never coming back. Notice the biblical themes here most evident when Ben kneels before John. Thus, Ben! is serving out his destiny by helping Locke achieve his. It can be said that every character on LOST is a proverbial Matthew Abbadon because each one gets people to "where they need to go".

CLAIM 2: LOCKE MUST DIE IN ORDER TO SPEAK AND SEE JACOB.
Jacob is clearly not visible to, who according to Ben's words, those who are too "limited" to see. Locke was "limited" back in Season 3 beacuse he hadn't died yet.

CLAIM 3: JACOB IS TESTING BEN AND WIDMORE.
Recall the famous Bible passage where two women claim ownership of the same infant, but only one is its real mother. The king then threatens to cut it in half, then realizes that the true mother would never let that happen. In this case, the baby is the island. Widmore and Ben want the island for selfish purposes. For Ben, the issue is about his mother and subsequent relationship with Annie. For Widmore, it is the leadership role (and thus power to speak with Jacob). Jacob's test can only have one person pass. Thus, the cat and mouse game between these two has a direct impact on the survivors, particularly Locke. At this point, Jacob is more interested in John rather than Ben or Widmore seeing as how the island Jacob "reached" out to John since birth. Richard is the de facto leader until the real leader is no longer "limited" to speak to Jacob.

CLAIM 4: BEN AND WIDMORE BOTH WANT SOMETHING THAT THE ISLAND CAN DO.
What can the island do? See below.

CLAIM 5: THE ISLAND CAN PROVIDE ITS INHABITANTS WITH A "TABULA RASA" OR CLEAN SLATE. THIS IS THE ULTIMATE POWER OF THE ISLAND.
For Locke, Ben, and Widmore, the power of the island essentially means a new "life" in the sense of the mind. This is why Widmore is so fascinated when Locke doesn't age vis-a-vis time travel just Richard experienced the same thing. Again, the scientific explanation for this is time travel (hence, the D.I. and Faraday going back in time). The spiritual explanation has to do with Jacob, the proverbial "father" of the island, who can "summon" those ready to explain the "rules" of this tabula rasa phenomenon.
SUBCLAIM: EFFECTS OF A "TABULA RASA"
Essentially, the tabula rasa is like a reset button on a video game console. The game itself is unchanged (hence, it possesses the same memory/code it was programmed with) but it starts over from the beginning. This is how Locke was able to remember everything that happened, even dying!, to him prior to crashing on Hydra island.

CLAIM 6: THE ISLAND, HOWEVER, HAS RULES FOR PROVIDING THIS "TABULA RASA" TO ITS INHABITANTS.
The rules are simple, yet complex to follow. First, it appears that the island mandates a Code of Hammurabi style enforcement. An eye for an eye, ect. Thus, the island does demand sacrifices: Boone, Eko, Shannon, Charlie, ect. These are necessary in order for the "few", especially Locke, to fulfill their purpose. In the future, we see Jack and the 06 try to rewrite their destiny by refusing to go back to the island. Obviously, they were wrong (proven by how miserable they've been) and now Jack is finally convinced. Also, Jack would have never died had he jumped off the bridge in Season 3 for the same reasons Micheal didn't die -- because the island "isn't done" with them yet. Another rule is this: in order to get back what you've LOST ,you have to be LOST. This seems a little confusing at first but makes sense in the scheme of the show. Locke was LOST in his life prior to the crash, LOST his faith during the button incident, then LOST himself in time before coming back to t! he island. For this circle to stop, Locke must see Jacob.

CLAIM 7: JACOB IS THE ISLAND'S LANDLORD. THE OTHERS ARE THE ISLAND'S TENANTS. THEREFORE, THE OTHERS ANSWER TO JACOB.

Before Ben left the church above the Lamp Post station, he told Jack he was going to tie up a loose end. I don't think there's any mystery surrounding Ben's destination. Ben promised to kill Penny and I don't think that was an empty threat. Penny's survival is now questionable. I believe she is dead.

The only evidence we have of Ben's late night adventure are his wounds and his frazzled banter with Jack over the phone the following morning. I can conceive of two likely sources for Ben's injuries. Since Widmore knew Penny was in town and knew Ben had the blood lust, Widmore may have sent some goons to watch Penny and then ambush Ben. What these goons were not prepared for is that they were ambushing a man that can't be killed, not while Ben "still has work to do." So after a violent struggle, Ben eventually bested Widmore's men and continued his mission.

I think it is equally possible that Desmond inflicted Ben's wounds. In an effort to protect Penny, Desmond engaged Ben in a physical confrontation in which Desmond also made the disappointing discovery that no matter what, he can't stop the island-protected Ben.

Both scenarios have the same result: Ben killed Penny. But the reason for Ben's attack was not simply for revenge. Ben is more pragmatic than that. Penny's murder actually served an important purpose. If Widmore "changed the rules" by sending Desmond to the island, then Ben can use Desmond to change them back. In order for Hawking's plan to work, Ben and the Oceanic 6 need to recreate the events of the past as closely as possible. Since Desmond didn't travel with the Oceanic crew originally, he has to go back to the island via other means of transport. And what better way to get Desmond (who was vehemently opposed to returning) to come back to the island than by killing his wife (and possibly son) and then telling Desmond that the only way to bring his wife back to life is to change the past, which we've learned Desmond has the unique power to do. This news would surely send Desmond on yet another sailing trip to the infamous island where he can set things right, wh! atever that means.

And just for fun, I thought I'd toss out a non-Penny related explanation for Ben's injuries: Ben acquired a vehicle and then intentionally caused a car accident with Anthony Cooper after which Ben's people kidnapped Cooper and sent him to the island which was existing in the past where he is then murdered by Sawyer. Cooper thought he was in hell when he came face to face with Locke, his dead son. I know this explanation is much less likely. But who knows? It's Lost. Theory by timeisrelative

Widmore’s First Big Lie is that he wanted Ben "removed" so that John could assume his rightful Island Leadership Role.

Based on the Widmore comment in 409 ( “The shape of things to come“ ):
“That island's mine, Benjamin. It always was. It will be again.” , I think it’s safe to say that CW has/had no plans for John to become the Island Leader. On the other hand, Ben The Good specifically took on the burden of Moving The Island so that John could rejoin Family Richard and become their Leader - at least for a little while. Ben may be a Liar, but Widmore is a Lying Liar.

Finally, regarding John’s willingness to “trust” CW, he should remember 17-year-old CW completely willing to cut off Juliet’s hand just for starters and that he nonchalantly murdered “Cunningham” for the “crime” of hinting where to find Camp Richard, followed by his own cowardly flight which helped lead Team John directly to the Camp.

Widmore's Second Big Lie is that he doesn't want John to die. Not only does Charles want John to die, he wants him to die by suicide.

After the meeting with Walt, Matthew Abaddon’s comment: "That's 0 for 2, Mr. Locke. Maybe I misunderstood, but I thought you were supposed to bring everyone back." The Angel of The Abyss is pushing John into despair.

MA's final words to John are intended to lead him into Choosing Death: “Mr. Widmore told me that Richard Alpert said that you were going to die. So tell me, John, is that inevitable or is it a choice?"

After breaking some Westerfield Hotel ceiling tiles and stringing his Suicide cable over something strong enough near the poured concrete above and anchoring the cable to the radiator, John’s ready to die. He has chosen death - which is what CW and MA wanted him to choose.

When Ben intervenes, he knows that John must die. But not before he learns a few more things and not via Suicide.

"Widmore came to me. He saved me."
"No, John, he used you! He waited until you showed up so that you could help him get to the island. Charles Widmore is the reason I moved the island. So that he could never find it again. To keep him away so that you could lead." [which are exactly the circumstances under which Ben voluntarily left the island]

Ben then patiently rebuilt Locke's Faith and self-confidence to the point where he Chose Life and thanked Ben for preventing his suicide. At that point, it was OK for Ben to kill John, knowing that John would be resurrected as "himself" instead of whatever would have happened via suicide.

Suicide is a sin for "ordinary" people in the Christian, Jewish, Muslim, and Buddhist Religions and as I wrote a week or two ago, I was convinced that suicide would not permit John’s entry into Club Messiah.

Therefore, I believe that Ben’s intervention in John’s Suicide proves him to be a Good Guy, willing to do horrifying work in order to further The Island’s, or Jacob’s agenda. I believe that Ben’s “murder” of John was what permitted John to be resurrected, the opposite of what CW wanted. Note that Somebody also wanted Hugo to commit Suicide in “Dave”.

Knowing that John would retain his post-Resurrection memories, Ben knew that it was also important for John to hear, prior to his death, that he had, in fact succeeded in nudging Jack toward becoming a Believer.

The fact that Ben left Locke in Hanged Mode suggests that he wanted CW (and The O6) to believe that John had, in fact chosen Death - hence the Suicide Scene and the Suicide Note put into Ms H’s hands. I expect that CW will be unpleasantly surprised to find his erstwhile “protege” alive and well on The Island at some point. Theory by Roland
