To me, the WHH vs. ALT debate is a debate that can be solved by looking at two key scenes:
First, in 'Flashes before your eyes', we see Ellie in the ring shop and Desmond says he'll take the ring. Now let's look at this scene through the eyes of these competing theories. . .
Desmond says he'll take the ring and what does Ellie say to him? She says, "You are not supposed to buy the ring. You don't buy the ring Desmond, you have seconds thoughts and then you break Penny's heart"
My question is... If he can't change the past, if fate and destiny has a way of course correcting... THEN WHY IS SHE THERE? Why not just let Desmond buy the ring, knowing that he will eventually get to the island when he is supposed to because, after all, whatever happened happened. I am pretty sure she doesn't own the jewelry shop... Not confirmed though.
Why feel the need to ensure fate happens if fate is all THAT CAN happen? My gut is telling me that she is trying to ensure what she wants to happen, happens. Why not just close the store? Hide all the rings? After all, whatever happened happened. He'll get there. Why does she need to get all Gazoo on him?
Second point to this would be when John Locke turns the donkey wheel and ends up with Widmore in the desert... Go back and listen to what Widmore says...
"There's a war coming John AND IF you're not on that island, the wrong side is going to win."
IF and SUPPOSE TO
both mean the same thing... There is the possibility that Whatever happened happened may not happen.
WHH is an absolute and closed concept. Any evidence of anything contrary to WHH, disproves it.
