This is my first ever blog so be easy on me guys.
After watching the season finale of Season 5 and letting it ratlle around in my head for a week or two I come to the realization that the batlle for the Island has been very onesided since the crash of 815.
I've rewatched season and noticed that the smoke monster made his apperance know to all from the day 3 on the island. Just to make myself clear, Im not talking about the "Pilot" or even the mobisodes (with Vincent and "Christian"). I'm refering to the "Walkabout" episode. In chasing after the mother boar, Kate tries to carry Micheal back to the beach and spots an opportunity to put up an gadget Sahid put together to triangulate the distress signal. She climbe the tree and almost drops a load in her jeans when she hears the roars of the smoke monster, and sees thats its heading towards Locke. Locke stares in what looks like fear on his face. At the end of this episode we have Jack and Rose talking when Jack sees a man in a suit and sneakers. Jack chases after him and what do you know here comes Locke dragging 250 lbs of the other white meat behind him. I'll be the first to admit that I never looked at this episode as anything but "wow he was paralyzed?!?!?!" but I think ! we should have all asked the question what did Locke see and what did he do?
The "white rabbit" began to make me more peculiar about what we saw. Jack has yet to accept his destiny/fate as the leader of these castaways, and working on very little sleep. He sees that man in the suit and sneakers again and starts chasing after him. Jack runs himself off a cliff and who saves him? Locke and his "what if" discussion with Jack. We then have the discovery of the caves and Christian's empty coffin, and of course "Live together, die alone speech." This episode snapped everything in one big ah hah! momement.
Now I go back to the conversation between Jacob and the man in black. The whole "loophole"goes all the wa back to th landing of 815, and how He was trying methodically get rid of Jack, Hurley,Mr Echo, and recruit Ben Linus and Claire Littleton.
Bear with me on this but with the S6 finale we noticed that Jacob did not hide himself from any of the people he encountered. Its just they ( with exception of Illana) had no idea who he was. From what I get about Jacob is that he allows you to make your own decision. Smoke on the other hand uses deception.
Lets go back to "white rabbit" as all remember the alice in wonderland, Alice chases rabbit down and falls in to a hole. Well Jack damn near killed himself by chasing what he thought was his father off a cliff. This became a theme of sorts. Season 2 brought us the "Dave" the Hurleycentric episode where Hurley almost jumps off a cliff. I cant remember the name of the final Mr.Echo episode in Season 3. The qoute by Yemi has never left my skull. "What makes you think Im your brother?" Then "the man behind the curtain". We saw a young Ben thinking that he saw his mother. Finally, Claire sees her Dad and runs off.
With all this said take a step back and watch the chess moves that Smoke has put together.I have this theory that Smoke took the image of any the people that were important to those he deemed to kill or recruit. To further prove my point look at the times in which Christian popped up in season4. Recruiting Claire and going to Jacobs( really Horaces')cabin. Telling Locke that he has to move the Island. Which brings up the fact that Christian says he speaks for Jacob ( I could be wrong forgive me). The middle of season 5 when Locke falls down the well and you know who is there talking about "since when did listening to Ben ever got you anywhere". Finally when Sun, Frank Lapidus, Ben, and Locke went back to the main island, there was Christian again telling Sun and Frank that if you want to see your friends agian, you need to follow John Locke. Guys just look at the eveidence its all there Ben is told to follow Locke by the Smoke version of Alex.
Smoke does not take the image of any living being that is close to the people he wants to affect. Yemi, Dave(Hurley cast him out of his mind long ago), Ben's Mother, Alex, Libby ( Micheal-centric), & AnaLucia(Hurley).
Hopefully this give a fresh view of what we saw.

Dont forget that some may have been Jacop.
I just have to say that I think assuming Smokey is one and the same with the Man In Black is a massive leap.
It's not a leap to think Smokey and the Man in Black are the same, or at least working together. Why else would the Smokey version of Alex command Ben to do everything Fake Locke (aka Man in Black) says ... which was to kill Jacob. Man in Black needed Ben to kill Jacob and Smokey made sure it would happen.
I am starting to think that Jacob may control smokey or that there is more than one smokey. The reason why is remember Locke told Eko that what he saw was beautiful and Eko said that wasn't what he saw. Also, the others call on smokey for protection and judgement which I think would come from Jacob. Now, I do think the fake people (Locke, Alex, Ben's mom, Yemi, Christian) were the man in black. Don't forget about Danielle's people. She said it took them one by one which tells us that the man in black can only do one at a time. We only saw it with Robert.
I was always curious about the sonic fence around Dharmaville at first I thought it was to protect them from Smokey not from just the Others since why would you need such an easy to get over device to keep people out. But then it shows us as something Ben can summons from his house which would make you seem to think Dharma folks didn't know about it. Possibility for two since one was protecting the temple (Jacob) and maybe the other the island (MIB).
As for John Locke being the man-in-black I tend to think he is more likely the monster apparition since the scene where Ben summoned him and John walked out. Therefore he set the stage for the temple scene where he walked away just as the smoke monster appeared and told Ben to follow John. After all we have seen what we believe is the smoke monster taking human forms.

so then, why does Locke (fake locke) look surprised at Ben when Ben says that he has to do whatever Locke wants him to do? If he's one in the same he'd already know this.
Well said! I like your theory. It is straight-forward and does not assume a lot. You give clear reasons for your thinking and lay it out there for us to read. Well done, and I feel the same.
Something else to ponder is that Illana said that someone else had been using Jacob's cabin FOR A LONG TIME. So those lists Ben was getting were not Jacob's real list's but Esau's/MIB. Considering that think about the season 2 finale, Jack being on that list, and Jack saved Ben's life through surgery so Ben could one day kill Jacob. Also Kate and Sawyer were on that list, they both tried to stop Jack from preventing the incident. They let Hurley go.
