It has been stated before that Rousseau's accent is not very French, though she speaks French and is known for being a crazy French woman.
Some have stated that it sounds like an eastern European accent, possibly Russian. I'm no accent expert, but I do know that Russo is spanish for "Russian". Perhaps this is a clue from the writers (and yes I know it is a reference to the philosopher). What if Rousseau's story is not true, and that she was Dharma or a defected Other? She wouldn't have been the only Russian on the Island....
Mikhail is introduced in the episode "Enter 77" wearing a Dharma jump suit. I found it interesting that he had a cover story that involved him "not participating" in the purge (and therefore surviving it). Rousseau had just told Sayid, Locke and Kate that she had survived on the Island by "avoiding these types of situations", referring to encountering Mikhail.
We later learn that Mikhail speaks several languages, and we already knew that Russo spoke at least 2. I don't think French was Rousseau's primary language, but I do think she was crazy. Mikhail and the others know exactly who she is, but she has not been working with them. This is seen when she helps the losties to get to the radio tower. Perhaps she is Russian (or supposed to be), and maybe she was recruited by Dharma. If so, it is possible that she became mentally ill as a result of her work with Dharma, and went solo in the Jungle. (wouldn't she have encountered the 'hostiles' before the purge? And Dharma? Wouldn't they have noticed her boat crash?)
She supposedly arrived in 1988, yet the purged is said to have happened in 1993. So a scientist crashes on a active Dharma island, has a baby, it gets kidnapped, she kills her team amd the baby gets kidnapped by the Others(hostiles?). She found the Radio tower, but not any Dharma stations? Weren't there vans driving supplies to those stations? How did she not flag them down right off the bat? What!? One answer would be that she didn't arrive when she said she did, or thought she did. And, wouldn't there be people looking for her and her team? Was the Island a secret back then? Was it's location a secret also? What!?
Rousseau and Mikhail probably came at the same time, from the same place. But did they come from the same time?
And if any of you are thinking, "but Mikhail said..." and "but Rousseau said...", to that I say Mikhail is a known liar and Rousseau is mentally ill. I just find it hard to believe that the writers have had her on the show from the beginning, yet she is suddenly not important. She's as important as the smoke monster! I suppose we will see...

Mira Furlan, the actress who played rousseau is from Croatia, which more than explains the differences in accent.
Nice try. there's obviously something up with her and/or mikhail's stories, but I don't think this theory is even close since its based on something the actress kinda can't help.
there is also one other thing that's been bothering me...
when we see the flashbacks of Ben committing the Purge, we don't see Alex anywhere.
if Alex was born in 1988/1989, then where is she during the Purge in 1993?
maybe annie had baby alex at the temple...
...or maybe the purge happened in 1993 but the island was moved so Danille go to the island after that but in the year 88
also, in the season 1 episode when rousseau is first introduced, while talking to a kidnapped Sayid she says "where is alex" in many languages. French, English, SPanish, German i tihnk, and some others
Mikhail was Ukrainian.
the accent is Eastern Europe because the actress is. the last night could be that she was married and that was her husband's name. hurley is the one that dubbed her 'the french woman' so take that for what you will. and who says she never found any of the stations. maybe she knew about them but avoided them because 'the others' were her enemy and she was scared of them.
Her accent is definitly not french.. And I believe it would have been easy to cast someone with a credible french accent to play her role.
So I don't think she's supposed to be french.
And I like the Idea that her and Patchy know each other!
