It has already been theorized on this site that the Island is, in fact, the Biblical Garden of Eden. However the previous theories have been unwieldy and illogical due to the fact that they tried to incorporate ALL of the shows mysteries. I do think that the Island will be revealed to be Eden, however I don't think that will necessarily tie in with the Numbers or The Lost Experience.
Island=Eden
CLUES
As was mentioned, this tree appears in the Season 3 episode "The Cost of Living". This tree is drastically different from everything else we've seen on the island, and a lot of effort was clearly taken by the production crew to CGI up that beast. So we can safely assume that tree is important to the shows overall mythology, and it is my belief that it is the Tree of Life/Knowledge.
Another production clue is Locke's Crossword from "Collision". Locke is filling in the final word of the puzzle (#42) which is shown to be "Gilgamesh" An ancient story with many close ties to the story of Eden. Now this could be a coincidence EXCEPT that the puzzle didn't originally contain this word. The Crossword Puzzle was clearly edited by the production team so that Gilgamesh would fit into the puzzle. The fact that they went through all of this trouble just to incorporate the word is a big clue. For puzzle, see http://www.lostpedia.com/wiki/Crossword_puzzle#Notes
The name “Christian Shepard” and the show’s general redemption, faith, and religious overtones all imply a religious explanation.
PROs
- The Island containing the Tree of Life could explain the healing (and possible resurrecting) powers of the Island.
- The reason women can not give birth on the Island could be due to God cursing Eve (and all women) to the pain of childbirth when they were kicked out of Eden.
-Explains the Other's focus on "good people" and "bad people"
- The Mark that the other’s branded Juliet with after she murdered someone is similar to the Biblical Mark of Cain
-Explains Charlotte's role as Cultural Anthropologist + saying she was on the Island looking for "where she was born" aka where mankind started.
-Explains the supernatural properties of the Island.
- God hid the Garden of Eden; explains why the Island is so hard to get to.
-Explains why the Dharma Initiative was so interested in studying it.
-The Garden of Eden is one of the very few stories/legends that nearly everybody is familiar with. If the producers have a single-answer explanation for what the Island is, their possibilities are very limited, and Eden or Atlantis or a Spaceship seem to be among the only choices, and Eden is the one that most people would find least unbelievable.
IMPLICATIONS
- The "beautiful Bright Light" that Locke claims to have seen (The Cost of Living) could be an Angel or even God.
- There is an Omnipotent God/God-like presence on the show that helps explain how "Everything Happens For A Reason"
- The Smoke Monster is an angel protecting the Garden and judging the Lostaways.
- The Final Seasons will be an epic showdown between Ultimate Good and Evil!!
TIE-IN THEORIES
- Widmore and Abaddon are “evil” maybe even demonic forces trying to reach the Island possibly to get either immortality or infinite knowledge.
o Abaddon is a Demon or the Devil
• Think about it: The name “Abaddon” is a Biblical reference to a dark angel (thought to be a giant locust), Abaddon’s talk with Locke in Cabin Fever “then you’ll owe me one” is reminiscent of a deal with the Devil, and he is creepy as hell!
• Some people have said that Abaddon is not necessarily allied with Widmore; However, nearly all of the show’s current characters are associated with Ben’s side of Ben vs Widmore, and Widmore has nobody we know of working for him. Add this to the fact that the actor that plays Widmore has very limited availability, and the show definitely needs someone to rep. Widmore’s side. Abaddon is the only logical explanation.
- Locke is (believed to be) some sort of Messiah.
- Richard Alpert is some sort of Manifestation of God.

What would you say to Ben's comment that not even God can find this place?
oh really, we've all agreed that the island is the garden of eden?
not quite.
The actor who plays Abbadon (Lance Reddick) might also have limited availability, as he's been featured in the trailers for the new upcoming JJ Abrams show that's coming on Fox....
But, then again, Alpert (Nestor Carbonell) was supposed to have had limited availability as well...
Only time & the Neilsens will tell.
Good theory, btw...
I am not one who is good at putting my theories into the written word, however yes I've always believed that the Island could be The Garden of Eden/Fountain of Youth. Not sure about some of your points however, but a well thought out theory, thanks. Re: Lance Reddick & Fringe: Due to the fact that it's due to air in the fall, it appears that taping of Fringe would not limit his availability to the taping of LOST to resume in August. As i've already given this some thought, i'm hoping that both he and Nestor will be available and active participants in LOST when it airs in 2009.
You just cite examples without giving enough concrete evidence from the show. Decent at very best.....but thats being generous.
I think it's a pretty cool theory. I don't think too many people would enjoy it because most of the answers would be based on religion, although I don't think I would mind it if that turned out to be the answer.
ian, no need to be a jerk, this guy spends time writing a theory and then you go on message boards and put him down, that is totally lame.
I don't know if this fits here, but I've just seen the movie "Fallen" where Aaron is the name of the angel of redemption. This angel finds out that his father is the devil, and when the devil comes to him for redemption, he rejets him at any costs.
does it mean anything to our "lost" context?
As an atheist, I would be VERY DISAPOINTED with a explanation like that. Unicorns and green goblins would made more sense.
are you guys kidding me? the theory is brilliantly presented and well thought out. whether you agree with it or not is a distinct issue, the theory in and of itself is very good.
even if this isn't the "truth" at the end of the show, I feel it is quite evident that the producers are trying to show that metaphorically anyway (i.e. the island is symbolic to that).
and trashing this theory by assertions rather than any evidence is exactly what you are claiming the theory is doing!
all in all - very good read, and good pick ups
Re: Isvarovsky
The great thing about Lost is that it has the scientifically accurate accounts for what beleivers will call God. What some call "healing power" of the Island, atheists like yourself will call effects of a large magnetic field around the Island.
But the dual explanations for everything on this show are what attracts such a wide range of fans. As a scientist myself, I know there must be physical explanations for everything, including "acts of God". However, knowing all that I do about science, I still beleive in a higher power, one restricted to the laws of physics to perform any miracles. With an understanding of quantum mechanics, we see that this restriction is quite loose, and that even the seemingly impossible is physically sound.
