After becoming a doctor Christian Shephard was recruited by Dharma to work on the island, probably on the medical station. In the season 3 finale Ben says: "I was one of the people that were smart enough to make sure that I didn't end up in that ditch". One of these other smart people was Christian Shephard. He joined the others early on and learned some of the island's secrets.
After the purge Christian was the one who turned the donkey wheel, so that Dharma people couldn't find the island. When he moved the island he teleported somewhere. He eventually got back to civilization, got married and had a child (Jack). I think he continued working for the island until he died.
Ben says in the season 4 finale "whoever moves the island can never come back". I think this only means coming back alive. After Christian's body ended up back to the island Jacob somehow "resurrected" him. He's not really alive but he still works for the island in this "spirit/whisper world" or whatever you like to call it.
(I personally think it has something to do with the 4th space dimension)
I believe the same thing is going to happen to Locke. He has to get off the island because "some very bad things" will happen, so he moves the island. He knows he can't get back alive, but he's willing to make the sacrifice. When the Oceanic 6 finally bring him back he will experience the same kind of resurrection as Christian Shephard did.
So I wouldn't be too worried about Locke's death.

Interesting but my only comment is that the Dharma Initiative MUST know where the island is because they still supply the food through the pallet drops.
That's a good point, but so far we have only seen one pallet drop and because of this time-travel stuff I don't think you can be sure when it was supposed to be dropped.
The timeline of your theory does not exactly work. Jack was born in 1967. Ben was born sometime in the 1960s and most probably did not arrive on the Island until the early 1970s.
If Christian was on the island before he meet is wife and had Jack, it was also way before Ben got to the island.
I suppose Christian could have been on the island. Maybe Margo also was there. Maybe he made trips back to it in the 1970s, 1980s and 1990s. We know he was gone from LA long enough without family to have had an affair and fathered a child (Claire)
genius.
I sure messed up with the timelines, thanks for pointing that out. So Christian probably made long "business trips" and in the last one he ended up turning the donkey wheel.
You know, I like the idea that Christian was a wheel turner or somehow lost his ability to get back to the island. I am not sure it it would predate Dharma or not, but if you think about him he is heavy drinker ala Widmore and Jack. We know both of them started the boozing after lossing contact with the island. Also, this my explain his trips to Australia, made be was like Jack, trying to find the island again.
That's a very good observation. Like father, like son.
I was going to get on here and post a very/ nearly identical theory about why Locke is in a casket, (so he can return to the island in a way similar to how Christian returned in season 1 in his casket), but you already posted it. SO ... I agree.
But I will add, that I think Christian was like Bentham and somehow is behind much of the manipulation work of getting the right people on board Oceanic 815.
And, one other thing, were there any people who had to return to the island (on flight 815) with Christians body?
Philoponus
So how did Christian get to the wheel? DHARMA had blocked the way down with its experimental vault, which was still intact in the present when Ben had to blast a hole in the wall to get through.
IMO, if anyone else turned the wheel, they turned it pre-DHARMA, when that cave had no other structure on top of it blocking access.
Good point, but Christian still could have turned it pre-Station when he was quite younger.
Oh and flight attendant Cindy was one of the people who had to return to the island with Christian's body.
In "Something Nice Back Home" --
Kate: "It's sweet to hear you say nice things about your dad."
Jack: "He was a good storyteller."
This is not a line just for filler.
